Hey I decided to start a new thread. Just curious what everyone's racing history is. For instance here's mine:

1983-1985: Got an Atari 2600 for Christmas. My very first racing game was Activision's Enduro, which featured an allnite & allday race that I suppose goes on forever if you're good. you have to pass 200 cars per day & nite..but this number gets higher and with each passing night, you can go faster. Best thing about the game: the night & day. Enduro was of course very primitive but the ‘sunset’ was colorful. The game was challenging but monotonous!

1989: At some point I got an Atari 7800 and played Pole Position for awhile. I got good enough to win a trophy or something, but I don't remember much about this...another primitive game.

1991 to 1998: we can consider this era to be my Dark Ages. I wasn't gaming at all!

1999: Had a friend who worked in a bar and she got me hooked on an arcade game called Cruisin' USA, a semi-realistic racing deal in which you raced laps around a bunch of crazy tracks. Actually, it's not very realistic to be flying around like you do in Cruisin'...not without broken shocks and blown tires that is.

October-December 2003: Sick of playing Dark Souls, Resident Evil, and others in which we die over and over, I decided to try a racing game since here's a game in which I can't die! I got Ford Racing from Empire Interactive, a game in which you participate in seasons Each season is harder than the next. You race a Ford Ka in the first season, then a Fiesta, then an Escort, etc. and finally wind up with the mighty GT90. This game got me hooked but paled in comparison to...

December 2003-March 2004: ...Gran Turismo 1. Ha ha! I read about this game on a game reviews website and decided to give it a try. First car: a black 1988 Nissan Silvia Q's 1800cc.

March 2004-...: Gran Turismo 2. After an entire year, I'm still exploring all the cars in this game. Lord knows when I'll be done with it! First car: 1982 Toyota Starlet.

I've owned tons of racing games ...

Rad Racer
Mario Kart (SNES + N64)
San Francisco Rush (All)
Cruisin' USA
World Driver Championship (probably the best for N64)
Top Gear (All)
Need For Speed (All)
Gran Turismo 2

Most of them aren't sims, but not a lot of racing games are :(

As for my timeline, I'm not sure ... I've always been playing a racing or sports game at one time or another since I was like 3 ...

I can't put dates or times to it cause I don't remember, does being in your 30's mean you lose your memory!!!??? I can't remember!!!!!

As a child I was introduced to racing watching the GP's on tele so when given the oppoatunity I started palying racing games, like in the arcades etc. From that it grew to playing GT on a PS and now I have moved to a PS2. I have played a number of racing games but GT and the series are the best.

Something like this:

Mid 80's--Atari, Pole Position and Grand Prix, I think it was. a top down/sidescrolling racer, lol

Quickly moved on to the NES, where the only one I actually owned was Rally Bike, very fun.

early/mid 90s--SNES, with some fun Lamborghini game I rented many times, and Mario Kart

Then comes the Playstation--came with a demo disk with Test Drive 5 and Gran Turismo 1, among others.

Bought GT2 soon after.

Then got NFS4 for PC

Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero, loved it.

Then GT3 (hugely dissapointing, IMO ) and Sega GT 2k2 for Xbox when it came out, along with other racers.

most recently, GT4, back to GT2 style addiction for me.

my timeline is soo complicated cos ive always been seriously into gaming, but here goes
1985 - i was brought into this tough world
1991 - my dad brings home a megadrive he picked up for £255 :-o had most major games on megadrive but my true love was streets of rage 1,2 &3 etc
1995 - got a n64 and playstation (couldnt make up my mind whats the better console then) had most major games zelda, 007, tekkens, resi evil, final fantasy BUT one day my best friend brought gt1 for my birthday and oh my god thats when my gameing world opened up for me :) then i HAD to get gt2 and sorry but its still no 1 to me
1999 - bought a dreamcast and had most major games on that too, shenmues the best dc game hands down then msr
2002-3 bought all 3 consoles in same year a ps2, gamecube and xbox and been buying games for each ever sinse and one of my best buys was halo 1+2 and bought racing games beacuse gt made me such a racing freak but i didnt buy need for speed underground, i cant stand it cos its arcade handling and so basic + not much cars (im not one for modding the hell outta ure cars) and newest game ive brought is gt4 - all hail.

and thats basically it lol ive been into gameing so much because ive always had cousins and friends round weekly for ages so thats wll we had to do really :)

Been so long but.

Sega Master System: Super Monaco GP II with Ayrton Senna

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing

Playstation: Gran Turismo
Gran Turismo 2

GameCube: F1 Career Challenge

I'm over 40 and contrary to TMM didn't loose my memory ;)
My 1st racing video game was Sega Rally ( Saturn ) circa 1995
Then the PS1: GT1 and 2, Collin Mc Rae rally 1, TOCA1, 2 and the great Psygnosis'S F1 1996
After that a PC :Mobil Rally Championship, Toca2, CMR2, EA f1 challenge, GP Legends, Richard Burns Rally.
Then a Sega Dreamcast: Sega GT, Sega Rally, Le Mans 24 hours
Finishing ( so far ) with the pS2.

P.S. my 1st computer was a Tandy Color Computer ( 1980 ) but there was no 3D racing game at that time

Time flies ...and memory sucks.
About 90 % of my games are racing games, the rest being strategy ones lsuch as Panzer general.

Biased turkey

Yeah, my family had one of these too for awhile. Then my dad got a Northstar, which at the time was the fastest personal computer in the world. He sold it a few years later for 2 dollars at a yard sale!

Still playing on the racing games, you should grow up!!!

Amstrad 1512 lent from my uncle, don't remember any racing games. Did play a racing game on the Acorn computer, little brother of the BBC, but it was stright roads and got very boring.

Amen to that.

1980: Got an Atari 2600.
Night Driver, baby! (Of course, you were limited to about 90 seconds, except in practice, which is kind of like a Free Run.

My very first racing game was Activision's Enduro, which featured an allnite & allday race that i suppose goes on forever if you're good. you have to pass 200 cars per day & nite..but this number gets higher and with each passing night, you can go faster. 1981: Enduro. (Take that, Polyphony Digital...Twenty-four hour racing and night/day about 23 years before you!)

1982: I discover Pole Position at the arcade. I'm 8 years old, and have a heck of time reacing the pedals. I think it took me 3 years to actually Qwalwivy...er, qualify.

1983-1987: Pole Position II. I eventaully got better at it.

1983-1986: Bump 'n' Jump. Always had a soft spot for this game.

1986-1988: WEC Le Mans. It was like a ride...you steered, and the whole game moved. (Also had a day/evening/night/dawn trasition.)

1988-1992: Final Lap and Final Lap II. You could finally spin an arcade racing car.

1989-1994: Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP. I think this game gave me Attention Deficit Disorder. I think this game gave me Attention Deficit Disorder.

1991-1993: Sega's F1 Exhaust note.

1994-present: Sega's Daytona (get out your seat!) Still alot of fun.

1997-1999: Got hooked on Formula One for the PSX (the reason I bought one), and later Championship edition.

1998: Tried GT1 at a friend's house. Like Arcade mode, hated Sim mode (at the time).

2000-?; GT2. 'Nuff said.

2001-?: I went back and bought GT1.

2003-?: GT3.

2005-?: GT4.

May I be the first to welcome you to the forum.
Thank you, TMM :)

Yes, Lotus was a really nice game.
I used to make some small tournaments with some friends, in a programming course i was attending at, when the instructor wasn't around... we had to understand how the game was made, you see... ;)

Hi again, guys ;) I'm still alive.
-Back in 1994 when I was five, my first racer was for the "Dendo", which I imagine is a version upon the NES. It was a third-person scrolling affair where you drove a red Ferrari against waves of traffic and tried not to die. It was fun, but hard ;-).
-My best friend got a Genesis a few years later, and together we played Monaco GP to death. The graphics were sooo good!
In 1997 I was playing NFS: II for the PC. (The graphics were sooo good!). When I got a PS in 1999 the only racers I had were NFS: High Stakes and NFS: Porsche Unleashed. I was into Final Fantasy at that point, anyways.
-Then, I discovered Gran Turismo! What other racing games, right? That's not entirely true, I do own a copy of Burnout 3 for the PS2.

Good job on the GT2 board guys, keep it up. I'm mostly spending time in the Gran Turismo Union on Gamespot. I miss this site. ;-).

Yeah, it's been awhile since we've seen you. What's Gran Turismo Union?

my racing history isnt quite as extensive as most of yours cuz im young, but here it is.
mid-late '90s started playing pole position on my comp (one of those arcade classic discs)
late '90s played gt1 at my friends house every day
'00 bought gt2 for myself and still am playing it every day
'04 started playing gt3 but im not near as good as in gt2
plus i ocasionaly go to blockbuster and rent one of the NFSU games, those r ok

Just thought I would drag this up again since we got new people here. Note that it includes MacRoadster's first ever post in the GT2 forum...wherever he is now I don't know

Guess it looks like this now for me:
March 2004-present: still playin' GT2! I've finished it several times now, of course.

June 2005-present: GT3. I've been going thru this game slowly now that I have a real job and can't spend marathon 12 hour sessions in front of the tube...matter of fact I'm still in the Amateur League. I'll prbly start GT4 well after the PS3/GT5 are out at this rate...

Neat thread! Well, here it goes. This could get difficult if it is not an arduous and almost impossible task as I have also been quite a gamer.

1970s- 1980's Arcade games: sorry it is kind of a blurr.

Pole Position, 1 and 2 my Dad's favorite game. He had a buddy that owned an arcade and you probably can guess those are the people responsible for all the top records on those things, since they don't have to pay. My Dad would do the shifting as I worked to steer and use the pedals.

Spy Hunter

Super Sprint

Super Off-road Racing

1983?-1990 Racing Destruction for the C64- The game that got it all started, I believe the cars were even somewhat customizable. The tracks were completely customizable. My family constructed about 25 from scratch half of them I was responsible for. I sure hope to find a CD-rom with this game sometime.

1987? The next good home game was: Grand Prix by Accolade for C-64. I think my lap times on Italy were around 2:00.00. I know that to get on the leaderboard you needed a 2:05 or better. I would offer money to anyone who could get on my leaderboard and no one ever did.

1988? RC-pro-am NES

1989? Super Off-road racing for NES?-- Had quite a lot of fun with the 4 way NES game with the little trucks, not the 3d Offroad racing game for SNES.

1997- I played Rpm racing. - the game most like Racing-Destruction I have found for the SNES or NES?

--Daytona Racing for Sega Saturn.- Great game for its time.

1998-2000--Had about 50-75 hours of fun with a motorcycle PC game named: "Motoracer"

1999 MotoRacer 2-- Has customizable tracks.

--Played a friends GT1 and GT2.

2000-2002-NFS 3 Hotpursuit- PC This was my next big one. Almost 2 years as my favorite game. About 100hours

2002--Played 4 hours of Sega 2k2 while rooming with College buddies.

2005 March--Present: -Bought a PS-one and GT2- This was a revolution in racing for me. I Bought GT1 and about 3 copies of GT2.

2005 December 25- To Present: -less than a year later my Wife bought me a PS-2 for Christmas and her parents bought me GT4. I am only about 2% complete on GT3 and 0.7% complete on GT4 because I can't stop having too much fun with GT2.

2006 March 6--Played PGR demo on Xbox 360

I have started playing old racing games of all sorts now just to find the good ones because GT has made me such a racing junky. The following list includes a rating from 1-10 for it's time and my top 5 favorite to race now are ranked at the bottom.

Call me strange if you want, but Gran Turismo was my first racing game. And I bought a used copy five years after its initial launch date! At first, I didn't even know what it was but at $10.00, what could go wrong? I tried it and wow! I was impressed.

I never played any other racing game apart from the Gran Turismo series. And I don't have Gran Turismo 3 either. Oh well...

It's okay. There's plenty to do in the first 2 games. So many odd cars and so many races & tracks. I'll never really feel finished with GT2. Not that that's a bad thing.

dates have become a little hazy (kinda like my memory) but here goes:

1980's - pole position, super sprint (arcade and atari vcs if i remember correctly)

1990's - super monaco gp, super hang on (sega genesis/mega drive), then i moved on to sega rally (arcade and saturn). following the acquisition of my playstation i got rage racer, gt1 and colin mcrae rally all within a few months of each other.
the rest of the decade was (mis)spent on the following (in no particular order); gt2, need for speed road challenge, toca 1 & 2, colin mcrae 2, all ps1 f1 games, moto racer world tour, metropolis street racer, sega rally 2, uk rally championship and countless others i cant remember right now

On the current generation of consoles I have spent (and continue to spend) many a happy hour on; gt3, gt4, forza, pgr 1, 2, &3, rallisport challenge, need for speed ug 1&2 and most wanted, enthusia, wrc series, nascar 06, toca race driver 1, 2 & 3, indycar series, formula one 05, tokyo extreme racer, battle gear 2, kaido thingybob 2...................there are probably loads more but im sat at work and cant remember them all. i'll compile a list when i get home tonight.

My racing timeline is next:

When I was 11, I didn't care about cars, but then, my brother got me a racing game for PC (Need for Speed Underground 2(Gameboy Advance)), and then I startted to get interested by cars. When I was 13(2005) my father bought me a PSOne and I buyed Driver 1 and 2.Then I buyed Need For Speed 4:High Stakes. This year (completely hipnotized by Initial D), I was thinking about buy a game with the 86, and I finaly found it (Gran Turismo 2). After that, I was becoming more conscient that if you want to win a race, you don't have to use the fastest car in the game (NFS), you have to use a well handling car (86).

Tahitidrift

PD: WHY DO I GOTTA LIVE IN ARGENTINA, WHERE THINGS ARE THREE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN IN US?! IF I ONLY HAD PS2 NOW I WILL BE PLAYING GT4!

my 1st racing game was GT1. after me and my brothers finished that off, we moved into Colin McRae rally. then GT2, GT3, now i'm at GT4.

I can't remember very well my timeline, I was used to play differentstyles of games.

Probably my first car game was... virtua racing for mega drive/genesis.

I remember that I played too the sega rally. When I was 11 or 12 years, I bought the mobil 1 rally championship, then some time later, a year(Yeah, I played very much mobil 1 rally), I started to play Colin Mcrae 2. Two years later I bought a dreamcast, with MSR (metropolis street racer), and that developed very much my drift techniques (without knowing what was drift), because you must drift to win money (kudos). I've finished it 3 or 4 times! After that game, I almost only played racing games. I played Gt1, gt2, gt3 (Just only a half year, because I hadn't a playstation, gt1 and 2 was played in epsxe), and gt4 (Just a day or two :( , NFSHP, NFSHP2, NFSU and a little of NFSU2, f355 challenge for dc, tokyo xtreme racer 2, sega gt, 4x4 evo and a lot more that I don't remember. I can say that I played alot racing games.

My timeline:
Pole Position
Outrun
Daytona racing
sega rally
test drive
ridge racer
need for speed
GT1
GT2
GT3
GT4

After that, I was becoming more conscient that if you want to win a race, you don't have to use the fastest car in the game (NFS), you have to use a well handling car (86).

At least in Argentina you got some fine babes that probly aren't as stuck-up as they would be in America! :D

Anyways, yeah, I like what you said about taking a car that handles well over one that just goes fast. You don't need the fastest cars to win races in GT2, that's for sure.
