Wheel VS DS3 - Which is better?

On GT5 tons of people use wheels or DS3s, but which is better? After my Driving Force GT broke I was stuck with a controller. With the controller I started drifting, because its easy with a controller and join a lot of Dirty ///NASCAR rooms. The majority of the time, I was really taking the game seriously.

I just got a G27 a couple of days ago, for me, I can take the game seriously, it was made for use with a wheel!

I now join clean rooms with good racers and sometimes join a Dirty //NASCAR room.

I am much better and faster with a wheel than a controller.

What do you think?

DS3 or Wheel?

It really depends on who you ask.

For me the wheel is a must. I was using a controller for every version of gran turismo before the current one, but since i got the wheel theres no going back. I tried racing with the controller again recently to compare and i cant even keep my ghost using the wheel in sight. But there r some guys who use a ds3 that can beat me. But the wheel is so much more fun.

Controllers are harder to make smooth and controlled adjustments to steering, braking and acceleration inputs compared to a wheel.

Otherwise they're about equal. The extra turning radius you get from a wheel isn't really that helpful since after a certain point you're just going to understeer because you're going in too hot.

The reason the top Time Trial finalists are all using wheels is more down to the fact they invest a lot more time into the game than the average player normally, so they see it a fit investment to get a wheel.

In my eyes using a wheel is vastly superior just because of the better control you get, but everyone has their preference.

Get it? We are playing at driving a car. When my next car comes with a DS3 instead of a steering wheel, throttle, brake and clutch, I'll change my mind.

I had a G27 + Obutto cockpit for about a year. Got sick of the 1-2 shift putting me in neutral 99% of the time and I didn't want to be stuck using the paddles and I didn't like not having a real e-brake, so I sold the rig. I am just as fast with the DS3 and much better at drifting although it's been a long time since I've had the wheel so I'd probably be good at drifting with it now. I have controller sensitivity set to full 7.

Wow, was that all really nescesary? I think we got it after the first "wheel."

It depends on what you're looking to get out of the game. If you want to simply drive cars around and have fun doing that, a controller is okay. If you want to set hotlaps and join competitive racing leagues, a wheel is definitely a must. That said, I've known extremely competitive drivers who do just fine with the DS3.

I think that most people will realise after getting the game though that they would really like a wheel. :D

I've been learning the wheel for a month after using the controller for GT 2,3 and 5.

I like the wheel but I don't fault people for using the controller.

The wheel is very, very, very nice for PC sims.
I wouldn't have tried them without the wheel.
The pc sim FFB is awesome and very adjustable in most cases.

So now I have:

GT5 (PS3)

Dirt 3 (PS3)

GTR2

So are you saying the wheel is better?

Ah, thanks Byegad for the clarification. You're previous post was a little ambiguous. You made me howl with laughter

For me I'd have to say Wheel even though these days I'm a DS3 user. In my dim and distant past I used a wheel and it was a much better experience all around.

Your right, lots of skilled DS3 users, but, wheel is more fun :)

But there are more wheel users that get the top times because it's easier using a wheel but there are really skilled DS3 users but that is not common and super rare to find those so IMO wheel is better and it also feels better.

I think that 98% of the time, a wheel has a .1-.5 tenth advantage over a pad depending on the combo being used.

For me, my G27 is the only way to go. It is a real as an affordable simulator can get and adds a ton of enjoyment to my driving experience.
BANG

I haven't had the opportunity to play a ps3 yet so my input may be invalid. On the xbox I was always faster with a controller. I tried a wheel for 4 months and couldn't come within 2-3 seconds of my controller times. I might be an exception to the rule on this one.

A wheel is obviously better since you have more control on smoothness. However it takes time to learn. Plus you need a special seat and positioning. I use a controller because of this.
