Just something random I thought of today. How many of us actually follow and interpret the lyrics when we listen to music?

Most of the time, I don't follow the lyrics. Usually because they are hard to understand, or I just want to listen to the beat. Most of my favorite songs I like because of it's beat and rhythm.

I always learn the lyrics. Whether I interpret them or not is a bit of a grey area. Depends on the song. If there's a clear cut meaning to the song, then you kind of naturally follow the lyrics when you learn them.

Granted, KoRn and Slipknot don't exactly shroud the meanings of their songs in difficult to understand lyrics...

It depends on what mood or how seriously I'm taking the music. I'm not going to sit here and listen to Rob Zombie or vaporwave or whatever and take it too seriously. However, I'll listen to a band like Tame Impala or Rush and take the lyrics very seriously, since the lyrics just feel more powerful.

If the song has lyrics to it I usually get the general tune and hum it
If I like the song I'll actually attempt to interpret what they're saying
If they're gonna be my new fav song I go onto the internet and look up the lyrics
So yeah depends on how much I like the song

For me it mainly depends on the song that I'm listening to. But most of the time I do.

Depends on a number of things. It can be difficult just figuring out what the lyrics are with some genres. Sometimes with other genres you miss far too much if you don't at least know the lyrics.

It really depends on what type of music I'm listening to and what I'm doing. If it's something like rap or country than I usually don't as it's not all that necessary as the songs aren't story driven (plus if it's one of these genres it's usually background music I have no control over). If it's something like progressive rock where they're usually telling a story than I make it a mission to learn the lyrics as it's essential to knowing what the hell is going on.

Tried to follow the lyrics to some ghetto-ish rap song my friend was listening to. Man, it was hard.

And I sound like an old man saying this.

If I hear a song enough, I know the lyrics. What they mean is something that never really crosses my mind

Im actually follow the lyrics. Though hard to follow song like Macklemore is the exception.

This is why i hate Pitbull songs.

I feel that depending on the artist, you can learn a lot from the lyrics an artist writes. They can open your mind up to a new perception, and give you ways to understand another view you maybe don't share. Lyrics often shape my view of an artist because it reflects what sort of person they are, whether they are good hearted, egotistical, happy or sad. And for me, that plays a part on my view of the artist.

I'm always more into the beat and the sounds. Vocals can enhance the experience.

As for the lyrics, I really don't care UNLESS if the instruments are so silent that I have no other choice and at the end of the day those songs that do that have 🤬, cliche, sappy lyrics that just annoy me. So I stay away from them as much as possible.

The sounds and melody can tell you more than lyrics IMO, though it might depend of how imaginative are you.

...Half the music I listen to don't have any lyrics, so... :dopey:

But yeah, I try to follow whatever's said. If it's some inane crap, then my impression of that particular song will take a knock.
