Out of those two, I'd go with the the Asus. Without a doubt.

Not only does it have more memory and HDD space, but it's right up there with the more reliable laptop manufacturers. In this case, I think the design and build quality are also in the X550's favour.

That said, you can probably find one from a good brand with a better processor for roughly the same price online. But anything with over 500GB of space will set you back a little more. It depends what you want from a laptop really.

Thank you for your help, Wiegert. I have heard a few bad things about Sony's customer service as well. Mind you, I tried both in-store yesterday and the Sony did feel a lot nicer to hand.

I'll probably have to look at a few reviews of both and then make a decision.

If I had to choose between reliability/better brand image and how nice it felt to use initially, I'd sacrifice the latter. Chances are you would be completely used to either new laptop within a couple of weeks anyway. Which was the case when I chose a Lenovo over a Sony last year. Hated how it felt at first, but half a month later I had no complaints.

It would be ideal to check as many reviews as you can first though.

The Asus also has a slightly better processor according to CPU Boss.

I'd recommend maybe going for a model with an i3 processor though. At that price point you might need to go with a 500GB hard drive, and maybe only 4GB of RAM, but the better processor should be worth it.

I just had a quick search on Amazon and I think this one might be worth a look at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00G48QLD2/?tag=gtplanetuk-20

It has a decent i3 processor, 750GB hard drive and 6GB of RAM. It's a close call between it and the Asus, but I believe the i3 processor gives it the edge in performance. It's a little bit cheaper too.

Quick processor comparison vs the Asus: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i3-3217U-vs-Intel-Celeron-1007U

I can vouch for Acer, i've had my Acer laptop for 6 years now, the only problem i've had with it is that the battery doesn't hold it's charge for long anymore, but that's my fault because I always used to keep it plugged in when in use. They do load the thing with bloatware, but not nearly as bad as manufacturers like Sony and Lenovo. I hear Asus has good build quality etc. so I guess it's just a case of reading reviews for those particular models.

Would definately go with the ASUS. 2 more gigs of ram, 500 more gigabytes of hard drive space, and a decent entry level processor.

(Coming from an owner of a very similar laptop, with the main difference being the processor, in which mine is an i5. Same graphics card, amount of RAM, and size.)

I would go for the HP.
HP has more USB slots [2x usb 3] [1x usb 2]
The Asus is [1x USB 3] [1X usb 2]
The 6GB of ram in the asus won't be that much of a help. 4GB should be enough.
The Intel Core i3 is slightly more better than the intel celeron. Intel Celeron is very weak.
1TB is 1000GB
500GB is 500000MB
TB>GB>MB
Mostly you can do almost everything that the Asus can do but a tiny bit better on the hp. The HP is .2 KG lighter than the Asus. The HP already comes with windows 8.1. You will have to download 8.1 if you choose the asus in the windows store or you will get a nag telling you to upgrade to windows 8.1 sometimes. The Hp is better IMO.

Might have been and gone, last post for this pre-Christmas question was 8th Dec.

I've had maybe 3(?) HP laptops and every of them have been just a piece of 🤬.
And I can't understand why i still bought 3 of them :D
But i'm not saying that every HP would be bad.
Last laptop i had was Acer 7551G, if I remember correct and it was good one except it got quite hot after a while.
It burnt your fingers when typing on keyboard
But on-topic, i would take the Asus one too. 👍

Damn, didn't notice that. :banghead:

I've had a Toshiba Satellite 4gb RAM, i3, 500gb HDD in the past. It lasted about 6 years and it just got old and warn out. I gave it to my sister to use for school.

I got a new Satellite now (with Windows 8 (don't like W8)) and basically the same specs but with a 750gb HDD. Seems to work well.
