What Mercedes Does anyone recomend for the merc race in the beginners league.

Personally I took the SL230K. It's easily fast enough to win the Beginner and the Amateur races.

If you win the Amateur merc race Legend of Silver Arrow you win this car -- Mercedes Benz CLK Touring Car (D2 AMG Mercedes) very fast indeed!!

Yes I used the Kompressor too, even to win the touring car in the event you mention above.
