Would be interesting to hear who found which gold hardest, from the people who have 102 golds.
Funny you say that. I just posted exactly what you wanted on IGN's Gran Turismo board. Shamefully, I'd completely forgotten about this board!
Here's the post:
Just wrapped up the Nurburgring. All challenges done, all gold, and no driving assists on any of them. Now I feel like I can actually start racing.
My most memorable challenges, for good or bad reasons:
E-3: Pylon Slalom Challenge
Gold time: 0'18.500
My time: 0'18.271
The d-pad isn't as precise as a wheel, so it was very difficult to find my rhythm. Hell, even with a wheel, I never look forward to these slalom tests.
G-6: The high speed "Porsche curve"
Gold time: 0'31.400
My time: 0'31.269
Wow. Talk about a twitchy car. You can put this thing into the wall by
breathing on the d-pad or square button. This one took a good bit of patience and pretty much perfect timing of braking, turn-in, and acceleration out of the corners.
K-2: Master the Mercedes SLR McLaren
Gold time: 0'44.500
My time: 0'44.322
This challenge, like many, came down to braking perfectly into the corners and getting good traction out of them. Without good corner exit speed, your time is eaten away while you accelerate down the straights at a much slower pace than you would've had you taken the corner perfectly. This one seemed to have very a slim margin for error in that regard. Very frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.
K-6: Master the Enzo Ferrari
Gold time: 0'35.000
My time: 0'34.666
What can I say? One of my favorite cars in my favorite section of Monaco. I went into it thinking, "piece of cake." Not so. I found it easier to drive this challenge in higher gears than I would've thought would be efficient. The Enzo has enough torque to compensate for the gearing, and taking what would normally be a 2nd gear corner in 3rd proved much faster due to the fact that traction problems weren't so prevalent.
M-3: Mastering consecutive hairpins at the Amalfi Circuit
Gold time: 0'26.000
My time: 0'25.945
Good lord. Those last two tight hairpins are a nightmare in the Alfa Romeo. Despite its rather low power, the car consistently wants to toss its rear outward. Getting traction out of the hairpins and approaching them at the right angle are crucial. Very difficult Gold for me, and the closest margin next to...
N-6: Grand Valley Speedway 1 lap challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
This one. I won this one by a bumper. Seriously. Caught the lead car entering the final turn and drafted on the final straight only to edge out in front
right at the finish. It proved to be
very difficult for me to put together a lap perfect enough to catch and overtake the leading Opel. I'm willing to bet the time difference was in single-digit thousandths of a second.
O-5: Prototype racing car challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
The strategy I found to work best here was a little counter-intuitive. Rather than passing the Bentley ASAP, taking the first corner
slowly and spending more time drafting the Bentley brings you to around 380 kph, which can be held after passing the Bentley until the chicane. Once arriving at the chicane, you do the same for the next LMP car: give it some breathing room, then draft to build up a lot of speed rather than passing him immediately out of the chicane. By the time you reach the final chicane, you're mere car lengths from the lead car. Passing the 3rd and 2nd place cars quickly always kept me much slower on the straights, and I never got close to the 1st place car by the last chicane. Giving them room and drafting them longer, however, keeps much higher speed throughout the majority of both straights. This sets up a very easy pass in the final corner.
O-6: High power touring car challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
Back in the BMW from N-6. This time I was tasked with overtaking touring cars on one of my favorite sections of the Nurburgring. I absolutely destroyed this test when I got everything right, but that was my problem: getting everything right in this car was a thumb-blistering, hair-pulling, fiancée-slapping experience. Don't worry, she's ok.
Well, there you have it.
