Which will be our Mission 34?

Mission 34 in GT4 is renowned for being extremely difficult. Which 'mission' in GTPSP have you found to be the most difficult?

Also, which mission have you enjoyed the most?

I still have some ways to go before I have all gold so my opinion isn't formed yet, but I am interested in hearing (reading) what everyone else has to say (write).

So what do you think?

Probably the one mission I spent the most time on (but nowhere close to what I did to pass Mission 34) was a mission to overtake 2 cars at laguna seca. I kept hitting the corvette at the corkscrew.

I actually wish there were more full lap missions. They were pretty good.

EDIT: Actually my vote goes for the whole 2 blocks of Nurb challenges.

I found the Nurb challenges with the M5 to be incredibly easy. I had no problem getting silver the first run through them, and gold after a few practice runs.

For me it was O-1. The GT-One/CLK-GTR at Motegi. I must have tried this around 75-80 times before I *just* managed to win.

I managed to fit in no the inside at the last turn and push the CLK onto the sand :P

"For me it was O-1. The GT-One/CLK-GTR at Motegi."

Same here even though it's actually a really short one - I eventually actually won it clean, but you have to get on its inside in the second bit of the chicane, so take the first one a bit wide to get to its inside for the second half of the chicane - once I figured that out it was a bit easier, though the first time I still let it just overtake me before the finish again ... doh!

Generally the ones where there's just Gold to be won can be a bit hard to pass, because, well, you can only get gold basically, so there's no easier win for Bronze. I may find others harder though once I'm going for all golds (at 34 golds, 48 silvers now or thereabouts). For instance the one where you have to overtake three cars on the Ring could be hard to get gold.

Would be interesting to hear who found which gold hardest, from the people who have 102 golds.

None of them were really so difficult I couldn't pass them with at least silver. The afforementioned CLK-GTR at Motegi is fairly difficult though, takes some very precise braking, steering and racecraft.

I didn't find the Laguna Seca pass 2 cars difficult, but I practiced it a lot to get it just right. Again, careful braking is what its about, but in this case its also a bit of faith in taking turn 6 almost flat after changing down to 3rd gear, thats what gets you right behind the Corvette for the corkscrew so you can outbrake him and block his entry.

I think the most difficult for me to get absolutely perfect were some of the Nurburgring ones, because your line has to be very precise with very little space for errors. One small error in gear shifts, curb riding or in just simple racing line costs a lot of time there.

I found the Snow rallying missions the easiest, either they give you too much time or I'm just a natural  because I got gold on almost all of them on my 1st or 2nd clean run.

The secret is to act a bit stupid. I floored it throught the first corner and braked where his smoke was, then let go of the brake a little too early to get a bad line through the first corner of the chicane so you can get on his inside in the second.

Well, maybe getting gold in the nurburgring challenges should be the mission 34 of GTPSP.

The one I spent most time on was the last challenge of group N, nothing was going right but once I got there, it was pretty easy. (getting gold I mean, easy to get silver)

Nurburgring challenges I found easy, after doing thousands of laps in GT4 it was a relief to have them as the final 2 blocks of challenges I knew it was going to be easy and enjoyable.

Snow/ice challenges was the easiest though, many of them I got gold on my first attempt and the rest on the next couple attempts.

I'm still quite early in Driving Challenges, so my hardest so far is the Slalom test using Opel Speedster. I can only get Bronze and the Gold time is much lower than that . The overtaking challenges are pretty fun for me (thank god there are no penalties like in GT5P too).

I'm starting to hate that slalom test a bit as well. I did get a time very close to gold quite soon, but have had a lot of trouble to get that last bit of time.

The slalom test is the kind of test where it might appear you're nowhere near, but once you find your rhythm you'll beat the time by a lot. I'm pretty sure I tried that one a hundred times without getting near 18.5, before suddenly blitzing in at 18.222. It's all about getting in position to accelerate early out of the 2nd to last cone and across the line.

I've only done block K so far, so I suspect my Mission 34 is somewhere ahead. I'm pretty horrible at the ring, so it'll probably be somewhere there. (:

//Edit: Corrected the times, I was looking at the wrong event.

Funny you say that. I just posted exactly what you wanted on IGN's Gran Turismo board. Shamefully, I'd completely forgotten about this board! :dunce:

Here's the post:

Just wrapped up the Nurburgring. All challenges done, all gold, and no driving assists on any of them. Now I feel like I can actually start racing.

:D

My most memorable challenges, for good or bad reasons:

E-3: Pylon Slalom Challenge
Gold time: 0'18.500
My time: 0'18.271
The d-pad isn't as precise as a wheel, so it was very difficult to find my rhythm. Hell, even with a wheel, I never look forward to these slalom tests.

G-6: The high speed "Porsche curve"
Gold time: 0'31.400
My time: 0'31.269
Wow. Talk about a twitchy car. You can put this thing into the wall by breathing on the d-pad or square button. This one took a good bit of patience and pretty much perfect timing of braking, turn-in, and acceleration out of the corners.

K-2: Master the Mercedes SLR McLaren
Gold time: 0'44.500
My time: 0'44.322
This challenge, like many, came down to braking perfectly into the corners and getting good traction out of them. Without good corner exit speed, your time is eaten away while you accelerate down the straights at a much slower pace than you would've had you taken the corner perfectly. This one seemed to have very a slim margin for error in that regard. Very frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.

K-6: Master the Enzo Ferrari
Gold time: 0'35.000
My time: 0'34.666
What can I say? One of my favorite cars in my favorite section of Monaco. I went into it thinking, "piece of cake." Not so. I found it easier to drive this challenge in higher gears than I would've thought would be efficient. The Enzo has enough torque to compensate for the gearing, and taking what would normally be a 2nd gear corner in 3rd proved much faster due to the fact that traction problems weren't so prevalent.

M-3: Mastering consecutive hairpins at the Amalfi Circuit
Gold time: 0'26.000
My time: 0'25.945
Good lord. Those last two tight hairpins are a nightmare in the Alfa Romeo. Despite its rather low power, the car consistently wants to toss its rear outward. Getting traction out of the hairpins and approaching them at the right angle are crucial. Very difficult Gold for me, and the closest margin next to...

N-6: Grand Valley Speedway 1 lap challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
This one. I won this one by a bumper. Seriously. Caught the lead car entering the final turn and drafted on the final straight only to edge out in front right at the finish. It proved to be very difficult for me to put together a lap perfect enough to catch and overtake the leading Opel. I'm willing to bet the time difference was in single-digit thousandths of a second.

O-5: Prototype racing car challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
The strategy I found to work best here was a little counter-intuitive. Rather than passing the Bentley ASAP, taking the first corner slowly and spending more time drafting the Bentley brings you to around 380 kph, which can be held after passing the Bentley until the chicane. Once arriving at the chicane, you do the same for the next LMP car: give it some breathing room, then draft to build up a lot of speed rather than passing him immediately out of the chicane. By the time you reach the final chicane, you're mere car lengths from the lead car. Passing the 3rd and 2nd place cars quickly always kept me much slower on the straights, and I never got close to the 1st place car by the last chicane. Giving them room and drafting them longer, however, keeps much higher speed throughout the majority of both straights. This sets up a very easy pass in the final corner.

O-6: High power touring car challenge!
Gold time: N/A (1st Place)
My time: N/A (1st Place)
Back in the BMW from N-6. This time I was tasked with overtaking touring cars on one of my favorite sections of the Nurburgring. I absolutely destroyed this test when I got everything right, but that was my problem: getting everything right in this car was a thumb-blistering, hair-pulling, fiancée-slapping experience. Don't worry, she's ok.

Well, there you have it.

I'm starting to hate that slalom test a bit as well. I did get a time very close to gold quite soon, but have had a lot of trouble to get that last bit of time.

An easy way to do the slalom is to just hold the gas and never let it go. Use the brakes to control your speed. Keeps the car stable and makes the challenge much easier.

For those who found O-1 to be difficult, if you're using the default car setup, you might consider switching the traction control from 5 down to 1. I found that just that one change gave me more acceleration out of the corners, and I was able to stick right on the tail of the opponent car through the middle curves. With the default setting of TCS 5, he always seemed to pull away from me far enough that I couldn't get him cleanly in the final left hander.

Hmm, it sounds like a lot of people are using the d-pad, if so, then this is why some of the challenges are so difficult - the analogue stick is what I use and it gives way better car control because it has some degree of sensitivity. 👍

Definitely the Viper GTS-R at Laguna Seca test for me. I can overtake the Tickford Falcon well before turn 5, but I can't even get close to the Corvette C5.R until the corkscrew. Even then I can't pass him because the road is too narrow, and practically breathing on another car is enough to get you disqualified.

The GT-One vs. CLK-GTR test is easy if you tap the other car at just the right angle. It took me forever to figure out how to do it though.

Hardest for me is the Tahiti maze one, can't get gold here, and the BMW-GTR one where kinda tricky, I overtook the Astra GT in the last few meter on Grand valley and still didnt manage to overtake the first car on the nurb challenge with teh BMW-GTR, but I know where I loose time there, Tahiti maze challenge driving me mad.
