I know I know, too soon. The wounds are still fresh, etc. But comeon folks, this man's life is a perfect movie. Rise to fame, drugs, depression, tear jerker ending... it's going to happen. So who do you cast?

My current proposal:

Jim Carrey

I also considered Sacha Baron Cohen.

I really don't know, but I feel Jim Carrey would really empathise with Robin as another comedian who struggles with depression.

Carrey did a fantastic job on the Andy Kaufmann biopic (in fact, it was almost too perfect...), but Robin is a comedian who relies less on prop comedy and more on impressions and voices.

While I think Carrey could do it on the acting side, I worry if too much of Carrey would show through, since he also thrives on ludicrous voices and exaggerated mannerisms.

I don't see Jim as a right choice at all. You'd also need someone on the younger side because Robin's career spanned many years.

^No.

I think Carrey could do it b/c you need someone who can deliver the lines like Williams does, full of enthusiasm & different tones. But as niky pointed out, Carrey could do it so well because his olden days reflected around the same schtick. I'd like to think Johnny Depp could do it, but he's kind of played his own character for the past few movies.

Kevin Spacey may be able to do it granted he still retains his ability to impersonate.

You know, Kevin might just be able to pull it off. He's got the right look, and his voice is adaptable.

C'mon guys, whoever plays Williams has to look a least a little like him.

Most of these suggestions is like making an Ayrton Senna movie and casting Wayne Knight. Neeson would be okay but I can't really see him in a comedical sense.

The power of makeup & CGI can deal with that just fine.

You highly underestimate what 4-5 hours in a chair can make a person look like at the end.
Come on, he's not even the right body complexion. Jim Carrey simply wouldn't work as RW, make up or not...

EDIT: Someone else said Matt Damon. Matt could be characterized perfectly into Robin but I don't think he has the talent to act like him. Jim could act like him but doesn't look anything like him.

Yeah, but Jim Carrey? No way they could make that work. You can't really get two white men that look any more different.

Says the guy who thinks Liam Neeson would be okay for the role.

Getting the right complexion would hardly pose a challenge for a trained team of make-up artist and lighting technicians. So that's pretty much a non-issue.

Getting Carrey to act the role well enough would be more a demanding task though. But he's one of a few actors who could probably do it justice given the right direction.

If they can make E.M. look like this,

they can make Jim Carrey look like Robin Williams.

The challenge as Wiegert & niky have touched on is the actual acting.

Also to add that makeup made Robert Downey Jr. into a black man for Tropic Thunder and they made that believable.

Basically, anyone with enough comedic chops who can act can be made into a believable Robin Williams. Unfortunately, the only one that I can remotely think of who can do the job is Matt Smith (who's British).

I think about the closest you can get would be Carrey. A.V. Club spent last week talking about Williams roles, and it repeatedly came up that the only actor who probably could have given them the same energy and care would have been Carrey.

Look everyone. It's 37th President of the United States Richard Nixon.

Matt Smith doesn't really suit the role though. For one, he only has one voice.
Then you really won't like this, especially considering that my favorite comedians all happen to be named Foxworthy, Larry, Envall, and White...

Smith makes them sound insane.

I have no idea who those people are. :S

Matt Smith is a bit too lolrandom for my tastes.
