Move this mods if it's in the wrong forum. My question is this, who would vote for or against being under British rule again.Whether it be Argentina, India, Aussy land or whoever was under our ruling back then.If you want to be part of the British Empire again, then so be it.We should have a vote of for and against.

S&S.

Actually this is one very daft thread of many of mine.So it might aswell be locked.I ain't going to start anymore daft threads.I know little about the British Empire, if anything at all.Besides nobody is really that interested in the old empire anyway are they.So not to offend anybody please lock this thread mods.

I always wanted to ask some folks from the UK, so ... can it be that your imperial history is cause of your positive attitude towards multiculturalism? Maybe you feel some guilt?

Similar thing in Germany, are they so ashamed of their history and afraid to be called nazis if they refuse to take immigrants?

I would like to hear how politicians in these countries explain higher expenses from the state buget, maybe folks in these countries have enough money so they don't care, but here in Czech Republic people would be enraged and start to look for solution.

Good question. I second it.

I don't think this is a very "British" way to think about it at all, and living British history only really goes as far back as World War 2, and there is a lot of pride concerning that particular period.

I'm not sure, countries that didn't participate in the imperialism game have a similarly positive attitude too. It looks more like a general Western European phenomenon.

The Queen is still our head of state so I guess we're still under British rule. Seems to be working out pretty well I guess. I wouldn't want to be under actual British rule of course, but the status quo where Canada is its own country and the Queen's on the money is cool with me. If the Governor General or Queen were actually influencing things I'd have a different view.

Most people in Canada really don't mind, ideally we'd not have a monarch anymore but it's not really worth opening the constitution just to change it when it's basically just a historical formality anyway. Maybe that opinion will change after Queen Elizabeth II though, she's an endearing grandmotherly figure who most Canadians have grown up with, and people have a very positive opinion of her.

*waits for Americans to make snarky comments about Canada bowing to royal families while their next election will be Princess Hillary vs Bush.V3*

In part yes.

Maybe you feel some guilt?
None what so ever. Feeling guilty for something I didn't do and am only associated to by an accident of birth makes no sense at all, no more so that feel proud for something I am only associated to by an accident of birth.

Neither makes a blind bit of logical sense.

Maybe some of us don't have an issue because its a humane and compassionate thing to do?

If you don't invade, topple foreign nations, create millions of refugees, then take them into your communities, then you are neither humane nor compassionate.

The US has invaded and toppled many, many foreign countries, and we have taken in their refugees. We are humane and compassionate. Everyone should follow our example rule.

You (Brits) are probably used to migration of people from former colonies.

People usually identify themselves as part of their nation or race. They cheer on football matches, and are proud when their national team wins, even if the didn't play themselves, etc. And feelings can be illogical why not, some black people in the USA still think they are slaves and oppressed by whites. And I don't know others people feelings so I asked ;-)

I prefer to help them in their own country so they don't have to migrate to completely different culture, it's better for them and it's better for us.

I'm confused ...

PS - I vote for us all going back to being under roman rule again. Except the Caledonians, of course ... :D

Yeah. I'm fine with how it currently works in Canada.

I vote for the dissolution of the Union and a return to Britain Proper. And independence for Scotland, Wales and Cornwall.

Caledonia, Caledonia,
Seein' you walk by.
Make a river twist and shout,
Chase the birds down from the sky.

Caledonia, who could own ya?
Spirit of romance.
Caledonia, Caledonia dance.

Caledonia, Caledonia
You tempt a devils greed.
Make an angel lose its wings
make a fool right outta me.

Caledonia,who could own ya?
Spirit of romance.
Caledonia, Oh Caledonia dance.

Caledonia, Caledonia
Ya make my senses fly
Give me reason to believe
And I don't wonder why.

Caledonia,who could own ya?
Spirit of romance.
Caledonia, ohhh Caledonia dance.

Caledonia, Caledonia
Yeah,satisfy my soul.
Caledonia, Caledonia
Well,ohhh, groove me slow.

Caledonia, Caledonia...........

...Oh hang on, isn't that the place where the legendary Avalon is located, with still-breathing King Arthur, awaiting the day of his return? :dopey:

I believe that's actually (supposedly) in Somerset, but not far off :D

:ouch: I got C minus for geography so there's that, I guess...:D Okay, Cornwall it is. I shall root for you!

To complicate things further I'm from Yorkshire... but I hesitate to wish for Yorkshire independence as East Yorkshire (the finest county on Earth) would be overrun with even more Wessies than it is now. They're hairier, hill-dwelling folk most often called "chizzits" here.
