Why buy cars?

Loving GTS so far, but the current meta seems to be this:

1. Check out new weekly races
2. Look at leader board to see which car is fastest around track
3. Buy that car (if you don't already have it)
4. Spend a few mileage points upgrading it
5. Farm 1st place
6. Repeat

Maybe this is just an early issue with balance, but currently the competitive aspect of Sport doesn't incentivise buying and trying out different cars.

There are so many cars I want to sink credits into, but I fear I just won't be competitive once the race mode balances everyone's BHP and weight etc.

And then there's the One Type (or whatever it's called) races where you're literally forced to drive the same car as everyone else. Sure this makes the racing more competitive, but also kinda dull to look at.

Am I missing something?

This is pretty much any competitive game in a nutshell. Especially one that aims to be an e-sports focused title like GT Sport wants to be.

It's probably going to cause a lot of problems due to the reasons you listed, especially when the FIA sanctioned stuff comes out.

I actually don't care to play that way.
I pick the car I want to drive on a certain track and look how I can compete with it. If I win with a Huracan against 6 GTRs behind me, its even more satisfying :)
But if you want to be as competitive as you can, you may want to do what you just listed and hope your driving skills are enough

But I totally agree with your "One-Car" statement! The races aren't very interesting and mostly on boring tracks. Small tracks aren't too fun either...:dunce:

I have not purchased a single car. Well, other than the two mileage points cars. Seems like I get about three free cars per day, lol.

I am skeptical of this whole "best car" thing and think a lot of it is group think/follow the leader. after a couple people do well with a particular car, people assume it's the car, so they pick it, then more people see that "everyone " is using it so obviously it's the best...The GTR is not that great

...so the answer to your question is that you buy cars because you like them want to try them want to own them.

The part where you buy cars because you enjoy driving them.

There's also the livery editor, taking pictures... This is pretty much how it's going to be in any competitive game though- some cars will be better than others unless they just make them all identical but that would defeat the purpose.

I think you're missing the fact that cars can feel very personal to you, and that people like to be represented by a car of their own choosing. That's why you spend lots of time with the details of your favourite cars; you paint them, tune them, test them etc. And eventually you get to show all off that hard work off by competing with others. It's a wonderful thing really.

To be fair, I'm almost constantly spending money on cars to just drive them... saving up for the Aston Valkyrie at the moment

Spending money for a Nissan may be a mistake. But I don't think you'll ever receive a LaFerrari or a Valkyrie as a gift.

At the moment I got a Jaguar Ftype (love this car) and the road car Corvette with the miles. It's a shame there is no reason to buy any car though. Just stop the money system if it's just about accumulating millions of credits.

You are wrong here, I got a LaFerrari as a gift

Out of interest I know there is Balance of Performance in the lobby for racing, but is there a way of racing any GT3 car you want with each car having the exact same performance? So for example all cars are matched 100% on 1 car lets say the Audi R8 WRT's performance. That way everyone can select any GT3 they like and not worry that they are going to get beat or have to choose a certain car just to be competitive.

No I don't think anything like that exists. If it did it would basically just be everyone driving the exact same car but with a different skin.

BoP races are fine IMO as different cars suit different tracks. As others have said there's always going to be a meta; a 'best' or favoured all round car. Hopefully PD will make some tweaks to keep things balanced.

I notice that the lap record for the Gr4 race is a Scirrocco. 3rd place is a Scirrocco, too. Everyone else is a GTR but that's likely because that's the meta Gr4 car right now. If PD made a subtle nerf to it (like reduce downforce under the hood and adjust the saturation of the slider accordingly) then people driving different cars will start to creep up the rankings and the meta will change.

I sold my GTR and bought a Viper for Gr4 and I'm comfortably finishing top 3 on DR B.

I always buy what I want to drive and never focus on the fastest or best handling car. Upgrades I haven't done once and I don't intend to use it. Also the tuning (for what is there) I avoid when possible.

What's the point of upgrading the cars, when does that actually apply? Aren't cars levelled to each other in Sport mode?
They've all been BoP so far yeah... does seem a bit odd.

In Lobby you can get unlocked races etc., but I don't see the appeal as there's no progression (and no SR so people drive like maniacs).
