Why do dealerships give you brand new cars to drive?

For example, this guy I know ordered a BMW (can't remember which model) and because the dealership didn't have the colour he wanted, they gave him a 335i M to drive until his car got here. The 335i M was a 2012 model and only had...300miles. So, why does a dealership give out such a high end car, M model, with such low miles, so new, as a temporary courtesy car? What do they do with that BMW after hes done with it? Sell it as new?? Used??:drool:

Chances are, it's a demonstrator model used by the dealership for test drives. It'll be used for that purpose for a while, and eventually sold as a nearly-new car for a bargain price.

There is no way a dealership would give a 335i M sport as a courtesy car. All courtesy cars the lowest turn level and with no options on the car.

Why would they gave a courtesy car if he just ordered the car? They gave courtesy car if your car is in for service not when you are purchasing a car.

This.

Unless he ordered the car and it's meant to be delivered on a certain date. Then the unfortunate happened like the car was delayed for some reason whatsoever while nearing the supposed to be delivered date and it couldn't be delivered on time. For that, I think it makes sense for the dealership to hand the customer a courtesy car until his car arrived but I don't think any dealership would give a 335i in M-Sport package to a customer as a temporary car. Perhaps the highest is the 325i but I have no idea...

As far as I know, these courtesy cars, demonstration cars or test drive cars are then being sold to customers under BMW Certified Pre Owned (CPO).

I just doubled checked with the guy. He ordered an X5 but he wanted some options...so he's waiting for the car. And they gave him a 335i M. Why would I lie to u guys??? And..maybe I used the phrase "courtesy car" wrong...but whatever it's called, he got a 335i M.

When I had my 528i in for service, they gave me a brand new 335i as a loaner for 2 days.

They also give courtesy cars for those whose orders are generally not going to be on schedule as a way of making up for the delay. The reason they do this is to keep the customer happy, plain & simple. And the easiest way to show the customer you care, is to give them a taste of something a little above their car's price range, as a way to entice them to possibly consider the car later on.

I believe the OP because BMW does it on a regular basis, though the X5 must be fully loaded for a 335i M-Sport be on loan. But, it's not unbelievable.

Don't know about prices in your country, but an X5 with a decent engine and a few options will cost at least 100,000 euros over here. A 335i M-Sport will cost around 65,000 euros. It's not that hard to believe they will loan you their high-end demo when shelling out that kind of cash.

And yes, they also give loaners when purchasing a new car, especially if you're trading something in they can sell right away, or there is a long delay.

It's BMW dealer after all. there not some el cheapo car company. Im sure they allow dealers to do that. Plus its a dealers own incentive. They treat there customers well!
I dont see why the complaint?

Not that I don't believe you but I've heard of some BMWNA customers getting a loaner car, usually a typical 320i or a 325i but never a 335i with M-Sport package. In this case, the addition of some options causing a delay or something? This is because I've never heard of customers getting a loaner right after they ordered their new car unless their car is delayed for whatever the reason is and to keep the customers happy, they gave them a loaner car.

This loaner car is not available in Malaysia though. Be it a Mercedes, Audi or even Porsche, they don't have a loaner car for their customers here.

After an Audi dealership wrote off a colleagues friends R8 4.2, they've been plying him with RS5's and R8 Spyders, to say sorry (and because they are too tight to do the decent thing and replace his car with a new one, they hope he'll just take an ex-demo/cpo car!)

Sometimes dealers will give you high end cars as courtesy cars. My friend had his Cayenne go into service. In turn they gave him a Boxter S.

I wasn't saying that you were lying just that courtesy car are mostly lower end models.
But apparently that's not ture anymore.

When I had my 528i in for service, they gave me a brand new 335i as a loaner for 2 days.

But my neighbor had an M3, all he even got as a courtesy car when it was in service was a 328i or X3 but this was a few years ago.

Not sure his exact situation, I'm not that close to him so I don't feel like asking too much :sly:.

Audi dealership wrote it off? Why?

They do it to advertise their other models and/or higher specs. When my mum's MINI (hatch) was being serviced they gave her a high spec Clubman S for the day, and even offered her a Countryman as an alternative.

Audi dealership wrote it off? Why?

He took it in for a minor fault with a sensor on one of the wheels, I forget what exactly, but he had a dash light come on when it shouldn't, something to do with the brake pads/TC or ABS IIRC. A month later when he's trying to find out what the hell was happening with his car the dealer confessed that after they'd fixed it they took it out for a test (fair enough I guess), but on accelerating away from a junction it span out and hit a post of some sort. I don't know all the details, but he wasn't happy, I gather they won't replace the car with a brand new one, so they've been trying to find something else for him, in the process he's had some pretty nice loaners!

If the dealership wrote it off, the dealership should replace it. :indiff:

That sucks...but at the same time sounds fun. All those cars to test and rat on!!!!

What legal action can he do if the dealership takes too long or is flaky?

I work at a BMW dealership and I can tell you for a fact they spare no expense on their customers. The shuttle vehicle is a 2012 X5D Xdrive. Last years shuttle? a 2011 X5D Xdrive. They take care of their customers.

Not sure of the legal standpoint to be sure. The whole thing sounded iffy to me, the fact it's an Audi, at an Audi garage is actually irrelevant (incompetence aside), to work on drive other peoples cars insurance must be required by them, so whats the problem... oh unless it didn't go down like they said.. not sure...

On topic, the classiest and most exotic loaner I've personally had, was a 316i.. on the keyring for which, somebody had written 318i. Chassis plate never lies though!

Talking about dealership writing off a customer car, I think there was this situation in the United States where this dealership write off crashed a customer's E60 M5 when it was supposed to be serviced. He took legal action and I believe they replaced him with a new E60 M5 fix the damage for no cost on the customer. I couldn't find the rest of the story though.

EDIT: Found the article here.

My Mum got loaned a Lexus IS(The cheap one... 250?) When we took our Camry in for service. They accidentally broke the front windshield, which had a Tinted upper-brow thing. So while they fixed that, they let us have the Lexus for 2 days.

Why do dealerships give you brand new cars to drive?

Well, it'd seem pretty fishy if a dealer just handed you an used car for a loaner, wouldn't it?

I remember when that exploded over on the M5Board. The guy took Autobahn BMW to court after the dealership refused to adequately compensate the owner, and a jury decided that the dealership is responsible for the damages caused to the car from their employee. It looks like the owner will get about $60k and his lawyer will get about $100k.

my dads a6 3.0tdi went in for something small(can't remember) and as the part they ordered was meant to come after origionally planned they lent him an s6, rather kind if you ask me :')

Many years ago my mum's Suzuki WagonR went in for a service and we got a new Vauxhall Omega 3.2l 24v V6 in return. It was difficult to give it back!

When I'd take my Cooper in they typically gave me a pretty kitted out Cooper S for a loaner, their ultimate goal was obviously for you to want to trade in your car for a new one. I occasionally got a BMW 3-series as well if they were out of Coopers, but that wasn't very often.

The Ford dealer just gives me a car from Enterprise, I've had two Escapes and some how ended up with a Camaro.

Our Mini dealer isn't as generous. :indiff:
The first time we got a silver Civic, and the second time we got a base model Mini Clubman. :indiff:
