Why won't GT4 work properly?

I gotta know if this is a common problem, or am I so unlucky as to have bought 2 different defective copies of GT4 about a year apart.

The first copy I got used from my local GameStop. The problem seems to be related to the soundtrack. For some reason, the sound cues go wacky, and the little background music before a race/license test will not come one right away, or the little ditty that plays at the beginning of a standing start during license tests, as well as the ones that play when you earn a trophy (and the annoying "oooooh yeeeeeah" when you don't) do not start when they're supposed to. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, except if I try to start a race or license test before the sounds cue, the loading screen will come on, and the little clock thingy turns red instead of white, and I end up having to wait for sometimes five minutes or more before the game screen comes back on.

So I recently went out and bought a brand new copy of GT4, got compressed air and cleaned out my ps2, and it worked well for about a week; and now its doing the same exact crap as my first copy.

Does anyone know whats up with this? Is there a fix?

Thing is, every other game I own works fine on my ps2. Is gt4 special or something, that it requires an excellent-condition console to be played properly, without all the defects?

It sounds like Disk Read Error, which can be corrected, depending on the model of your PS2.

Go back to the main GT4 page and in the top right above the threads you'll see "Search This Forum", click there, and type in "Disk Read Error" in the box that drops down.

You should find plenty of threads about this topic and various discussions within them detailing how to fix common causes of this.

Hope that helps, the problem sounds more related to your PS2 not reading the disc, (hence the music not starting & the red clock) than problems with the discs themselves.

If you're on a fat PS2 rather than a new slimline, then I'd definitely recommend trying the laser realignment, worked wonders for my system. 👍

Oh god, the agony...i know what you feel.
Back at 2006 i got a wheel (which i still use today, Logitech Driving Force), and that's when my PS2 was getting problems. I had the exact same problems you had.
So, by 2007, i could'nt use anything anymore, except CDs, but i had no PS1 Memory Card, so my PS2 was pretty much useless.
So, fastforward 2 years, last days of August 2009, i came up with a BRILLIANT idea. I had this useless cable which i could use the connect my PS2 to my 80s TV (a.k.a. placeholder), and it worked! Unfortunatly though it did'nt play PS2 discs. (Except the blue ones)
So i looked around the Net to see what i could do, and i found this video, how to fix the "Disc Read Error" (since that's what i always got), and instead of using rubbing alcohol, i used Hydrogen-Peroxide to clean it. Then, i put in the GT4 disc in, thinking...if this does not work, i definately won't play with this PS2 ever again.
And then...the screen went black, the "PlayStation 2" screen appeared...i almost cried.

I really hope you can fix your PS2. 👍

I had the red clock problem, but it would even hang forever in my case. What I did was to change the PS2, because I figured out I had swapped it, 'cause a friend took it to a shop along his own PS2, but he gave me his PS2, instead of mine. On mine, no problems, perfectly running, I last tested it on 2009 winter.

Thanks, all. Gonna try peroxide, see what happens. Otherwise, maybe try to find another ps2 for sale somewhere.

Thought I found a solution last nite; I stood it vertical and worked great for about an hour1/2. Then, the whole game froze on the "congratulations" prize car screen. I reset, started game again, first thing I saw: red clock.
I wish inanimate objects could feel pain....

I'm sad ... for my ps2 won't do gt4... everything else works fine (knock on wood) i'd love to ride the 2CV (virtualy) but i can't :(

I have the exact same problem on my PS2 (old fat model) but I usually just have to wait a couple of seconds before it works again.

Because of this, I had to replace my PS2 since it wouldn't play GT4 or any game for that matter. I got one of the last bc-PS3's and got the memory card converter.

Why sony quit making bc ps3 ???, they r  it 👎 makes me:ouch:
sony needs a 💡 before they bring ps4, i've got two for them: backward compatibility & memory cards !!!, my 40 gb was gone in 59 seconds:grumpy:
Next time i'll do it with a pc:drool:

Is my slim PS2 dying? Occasionally you can hear the PS2 'skipping' like it can't find the disc. When it happens in load times (I think it only 'skips' in load times), the clock goes red, but only for, like, 5 seconds.

I had this on the fat ps2, not on my slim. Also because i've got a slim, no overheating for me! :)

SVX, I remember having similar problem, on startup my PS2 just made clicking sound - it was the laser trying to travel further than it can. There's a small switch on the laser unit on the side closer to the center of the disc, that engages when the laser reaches the stop. I cleaned it and since then I don't have any problems with it. Or by 'skipping' you mean something else?

It could be your PS2 or your disk, there's a certain disk that really sucks. Last Christmas I bought a copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen, I returned it about 4-5 times and even bought a cleaning disk for the laser eye in the PS2 so it's possible and with my copy it won't load up right away I need to access the browser and then boot it up.
