Wife approved cockpits?

Anyone here with evil wife approved cockpits?

My wife hates that I play "games" and hates clutter, so if I were to get away with building a cockpit, it would have to be able to fit in a closet and not look gheto. Its a tough one for me for my own fun vs a nice looking house, so, anybody in this situation and what did you buy\make?

Thanks!

As I understand it, the Wheel Stand Pro was designed to fold up and out of the way when not in use, so perhaps you could look into one of those.

Alternatively, you could build one yourself (I've seen ones that fold out of the way in the Cheap Cockpit Alternatives thread, so you could scour that for ideas) that does similar things.

You can also look at the Easy Fold Desk, it was my first wheel stand and it fits nicely into just about any closed (wheel still attached). Why not just man up and demand what you deserve? Couches aren't THAT bad, neither are inflatable mattresses when she doesn't hide the pump

There's a certain week every month that already has me on the couch just for me being alive ;-)

I googled the Wheel Stand Pro and it looks pretty spot on for keeping my dfgt assembled and folding it. However the pedals arent at the real driving position they are just flat on the ground ;-( but still a very good option and at 150 bucks isnt too bad!

Problem is im such a dork I would always be dreaming of a cockpit, and for that my only option (to still get sex) will be to finish my garage (its not insulated), secure it, and build my own cockpit (and the extra cost of an extra ps3 + lcd).

Thats a lot of work...but I have 99 days till GT5 . Hmm. I should have married a dork chick that would thought a cockpit in my downstairs would be awesome..but its a little late for that one.

why not try a Sega driving cabinet, with pc and ps3 comapatibilty? looks awesome.. and wife friendly too..

mrs sharkfactor playing.. note big cheesey grin!

..did you know?? you can buy a whole Sega driving cabinet (empty or with game if your lucky) for the same price as new playseat and logitech (or similar) steering wheel... and you can play Daytona and Sega rally on it too, with REAL ffb..!!

What is it with wifes and cockpits/games? Why can't they grant us (not me because I'm not married (heaven forbid)) a hobby. They collect sunglases, handbags purses and shoes and when we (married guys) want to play games, the wifes start to nag.

:P

lol, not all wives nag. I built a racing seat recently and it's been sitting in the family room for the past few weeks and my wife is fine with it. Why? Because she knows the seat can be disassembled and moved into the basement if necessary. Here's my post about my seat:

Let me know if you want to see any details on how it disassembles.

;)GT is a direct competitor (thief) to their sex life…:lol::lol:

You could do both at the ... forget it :scared:

If you really want a cockpit then would she be ok with it somewhere in the house (you talked about garage?). I could understand she does not want it in the living room though, a permanent cockpit... 👍

But if you plan on playing GT5 in the living room, wouldn't she be watching soap opera's 24/7? :P

:scared: building a cockpit that fits in a closet? Must be a very big closet. You must have a very big closet if you want to be able to play games inside a closet. :P

No, seriously. There are some foldable wheel stands. Read these threads:

Or you could get one of these and modify it. That's what I'm going to do.

Good wife! Can I have her?

Good wife, can I have her?

I have a wheel stand that you can disassemble into boards, just the top board has some construction to keep it all together.

1) Removable is good, but is is more difficult to keep stable.
2) Mine takes a lot of time to remove, take the G25 off and back in the box, undo all the boards, ... and put back together.
3) No room in the closet, we are in small apartment, so it used to go under the bed, expect now my "evil wife" found IKEA draws to make more storage space under the bed and I need to put the biggest part on top of the closet.

I try to keep the stand assembled as much as I can.

I've just built a stand very similar to the Steadiplay. There are directions similar on one of the posts here. I just modified it a little.

It took about a couple of days and cost very little.

My wife thinks its marvelous. Mind you it did replace one that wouldn't fold up. :)

And.... I have just found a G25, to replace my DFGT, on Ebay for £82 shipped. (had to tell you I'm exited about it)

Thanks for all the replies guys I will look at the steadiplay when I get home (at work now).

Getting rid of wife probably isnt an option till she kicks me out as I now have 2 kids (whom I have begun to brainwash into autocrossing with me even though he wont be able to drive for 14 years).

I am leaning towards a wrap around cockpit with a screen attached. I would have to completely refinish a garage to make that happen if I cant find something foldable that fits my picky needs.

Hell yeah thats about the functionality I want but im guessing that thing is going to be crazy expensive. Using my garage=another ps3 (150 on craigslist), a 42" screen (550), a racing seat or sports car seat ($100) so thats $800 already before I start the frame.

Im someone captivated by the cockpits with closed in sides that you have to climb into...if Im going to get made fun of, might as well go all the way.

The whole setup will cost less than a set of racing tires\wheels for autocrossing so maybe I can make the argument this is a much cheaper alternative to investing more $$$ in autocrossing....but she will still try to demasculate me at every opportunity.

I love this forum, so many other nerds that empower me ;-)

i really like that setup.

It would be 580USD after shipping (375 before ;-(, so taxes and shipping add 205 good grief!)

I think I have enough options for now. Ive got plenty of time as I have to finish a garage from scratch (insulation\drywall\epoxy floor\cabinets\ceiling\lighting and electric\replace a window and put a heavy duty back door in so no one can break in and steal my new creation ;-)

Itll be the 1st time im working on my house that im doing it for me and not for my wife nagging me to do it.

Oh yeah, that makes a lot of delivery fees. Didn´t pay attention where you come from...

There is an North American Company which makes a cockpit called GT3. Looks awesome too, but don´t remember the price

If you do not want to p..s off your wife, just show her how beautiful GT5 will be, give her the wheel and let her enjoy herself. If she does not like it, or drives at 40kmph (like my girlfriend did) do something that you can remove away when you are finished. If she still complains, change wife :)

Have you looked at Microsim's Racebase cockpit? Very nice, easy and cheap to build and best of all, it is foldable. I made one myself and I store it in the closet. Sometime ago, in the old racesimcentral forums, someone offered to sent plans for it. Look it up and you might find it.

jjsahagun that looks like a very good option. I was able to find pdf's of the plans but would like to find the kit to buy if they have it...I google and find nothing though, their site doesnt even load....Hmm.

Downloaded the plans for it, Have access to laser cutting the parts to make it but the more I think about how anal I am on wanting things the way I want them, the more I want to make it myself...especially after seeing the blue prints of the mk2 I know I can do it.

The more I think about all my nerdy resources from working at a factory, the more I just said screw it, Lets build it, make it pretty and face the wrath of the wife.

All your ideas and links helped guys...it wasnt in vain.

Secretly drafting it at work moohoohahah.
