How can any British subjects stand for their name to be associated with BP given the fact that the Scottish Government was used as a tool by BP to gain favor with the Libyans. Drilling rights for a Terrorist? Hay Scotland they killed your people too.

This was known from 09

I'm not entirely sure as to whether this has crossed your mind, but how does 'Brittan' go about removing the 'Brittan' from BP? A private company. :dunce:

So the Scottish government was exploited by the British government who were lead by a Scotsman at the time on behalf of British Petroleum's interests, and so all Scots in "Brittan" should be outraged? Is that it?
Not seeing it myself, and reading the article comments too, it doesn't make the US look squeaky clean in securing the conviction of the Lockerbie bomber in the first place, so maybe the folks of "Emerica" should be demanding the removal of US from things like US Postal Service and US Airways lest there be any negative feedback...

Ok look, this is something that I was trying to bring to the obvious. Given the fact that 190 Americans, 43 Britts, and 11 Scotts as well as others to the total of 270 were murdered by Libya at Christmas time.

BP acting in their own interest and using the dummies in the British health system said, that murdering scum bag terrorist would die in a short period of time, and now that piece of garbage is estimated to hang around for another 10 yrs! The citizenry of Great Brittan ought to string up BP let alone strip the B out of BP.

Anyone who thinks that the British government doesn’t pull the strings of BP, well I’ve got a slightly used London bridge for sale in Arizona.

Let's try this again "Emerican". ;)
There's no such place as "Great Brittan".
No such monikers as "Britts" and Scotts" in direct relation to the nationality of natives of any of the countries of the UK exist.

This is a Britt (Eklund, in case you were wondering):
175024~Britt-Ekland-Posters.jpg

but she's Swedish.

This is Brit (actually that's debatable given her family tree, but that's another topic!):

This is a Scott (Captain Robert Falcon Scott):

If there were 43 people on that plane called Britt, that's a helluva coincidence, especially if there were 11 people called Scott too. :sly:

A Scot is a Brit too by the way, so you should say there were 54 Brits on the plane, 11 of whom were Scots!

I’m totally mystified that you can use some weird Emarican ref. to me and not give the Scottish people their due. All references to the tragedy states as to the people who had a plane dropped on their heads were Scottish.

And just for Sifts and giggles here is the mystical land of Great Brittan

Yes, they were Scottish. But they're not "Scotts".

Wow, I didn't think I'd have to spell this out for you literally.
"Brittan" (the word in your thread title & original post) is not a country nor collection of countries.
There was a politician in Britain called Leon Brittan at one point though!

Great Britain is, and consists of England, Scotland & Wales. It is populated by British Subjects, commonly contracted to "Brits".
Scotsmen, Welshmen and Englishmen are all "Brits". (Though the Scots & Welsh don't necessarily like this, it's true!)

There are some people in each of these 3 countries called Britt, or Scott, or Dave, Brenda, Ian, Ann, etc. but they're names, not nationalities.

In referring to you as an "Emerican" I was hoping you'd pick up on your initial mistake, from my deliberate (although not entirely incorrect spelling, given that the country was shown on many old maps as Emerica long before the formation of the United States) misspelling of "American".

What do I do the next time a Brit calls me a Yank?
Usually call him a "Limey". (Like me!)

No dear. Because we don't own BP, have any controlling rights over it as a company or indeed its name. Similarly, British Telecom, British Gas, British Airways, British School of Motoring (BSM) and British Midland International (BMI) are private companies that we have no control over and no attachment to.

And we aren't all Hugh Grant's next door neighbours.

Anyone who thinks that the British government doesn’t pull the strings of BP, well I’ve got a slightly used London bridge for sale in Arizona.

And I've got a... cat. What?

Wow Smallhorses your pretty deep with all of your inside baseball knowledge of the early writings of how they used to describe America. I’m just a PO American watching the Gulf go to Hell and finding out that BP did what they did and everyone here is a semantic professor. BP should be ashamed and sell or dissolve the company so they can get what they deserve. How do you think the parents of the kids who were coming home to spend Christmas with there families are feeling about now?

Hmmmm.
So BP, who've taken advantage of the release of a supposedly terminally ill prisoner to secure some drilling rights, a prisoner who was possibly fitted up like the proverbial "kipper" by various payoff from agencies of the US Government, should take all the flak & blame for the British Government's negotiations with another country to secure future fuel for some of it's 62 million subjects, and should therefore instead take 1 man back to rot in jail while 270 families don't get any more cheerful about their losses?

I understand the perspective that it cheapens the value of a life in terms of oil drilling, but the greater good is that it benefits far more people in the long run, and you can't strip the name you're suggesting from the title of private corporation because some people don't agree with the policy.

What would've happened if all the people in America demanded that the word "America" or "American" was removed from any company that supplied parts or information to the Manhattan project because they personally didn't agree with the bombing of Hiroshima or Nagasaki?

I personally think that anyone who helped put that deal together to release that pathetic old murderer should be drawn and quartered on pay per view, giving the money to the grieving families. We always knew it was countries acting in their own interest but BP working to pull of a deal with Kadafi on the backs of the dead, I guess I just feel like I’m the last angry American.

If it wasn't BP, then it would've been Chevron, Exxon, Shell or some other hardly squeaky clean oil company that was bidding for the rights to that drilling deal.
It just so happens that BP is a convenient scapegoat because of their present Gulf Of Mexico incident, and consequently anything that can be used to tar (pun intended ;)) & feather them at the moment is being dredged up and made to stick.

Why were the US Government agencies paying off witnesses & fabricating evidence instead of giving that money to their own grieving citizens instead?

You know if I never heard of the Gulf oil spill I’d still be fit to be tied over the whole letting the terrorist go thing. I’m way more PO’d with their actions over that, then the Gulf, it’s just that both stories happened virtually at the same time. I don’t have any good will for anything or anyone that had anything to do with the denile of getting justice for those families.

the denile

 To think you've tried to pull me up over a perceived misspelling in another thread tonight, and then you come out with this!!!
It's DENIAL.

"De Nile" is a river in Egypt! :P

So what's justice for these families, if the guy sits and rots for another 10 years and dies in a Scottish prison, does it bring their loved ones back?
If he dies of his illness tomorrow, does it bring their loved ones back?

So you've no good will for your own government and their role in this matter too?

I have to wonder what happened to Transocean (Swiss with an American CEO) who owned Deepwater Horizon (and received $400m from insurers for its loss) and Halliburton who were operating it at the time of the explosion in the zeal to blame BP who merely had exploration rights of the prospect.

Incidentally, the "B" in "BP" doesn't mean "Britain", "Brittan", "British", "Britt" or any other reference to this land, mis-spelled or otherwise. It means "B".

The US government is in bed with Halliburton and therefore probably blocks news about the company. They're expected to report some profit on the 19th actually. Also, the Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit appeal against the company recently, with advice from Obama's administration. The corner store down the road doesn't get special treatment from the Executive branch, but Halliburton does because they're a hugely important "private" military contractor, despite their foreign bribes and whatnot.

Not sure about Transocean, but the CEO is American like you said so I wouldn't doubt they're getting special treatment too. Sorry, our government is just too powerful and these companies to important. Too big to fail. I wish the best of luck to BP and a high five to Halliburton for consistently screwing up big time and getting off scott free. It's the American way!

You and Famine are going to make Duke mad with your conspiracy talk.

BP used to mean British Petroleum... But now BP just means BP. That's it.

And I really doubt that the Government of "Brittan" would remove the B from BP, even if it still were British Petroleum.
