Will 'gear hold' make a return?

I used to like being able to hold onto the gear and force a late change when in Automatic, but PD dropped it from GT5p for some reason. Does anyone know if it's going to be making a comeback?
(Don't get me wrong I much prefer manual,

but 99% of real auto cars you can prevent an upshift and this is the real driving simulator after all)

We don't know, as the game hasn't been released yet, and PD hasn't told us, and nobody has played the game yet. Thread locked.

How do you prevent an upshift in a real car? unless you just flip it over to tiptronic.

That gives me an idea! If the car has tiptronic in real life you should be able to toggle it in the car BUT the shifting will be more sluggish and crappy compared to the manual model.

Well, that could be said about many things concerning GT5, it still doesn't stop people speculating. ;) And since when did you become a moderator? :odd:

Really? I havent know of any Auto cars where by pressing a button you can hold the upshift.. weird. 99%?

Just drive manual...

Right, so if you drive a manual Golf GTI, you can change gears quicker than I can in my Golf GTI equipped with DSG? Ummmm, no, I think not.

No, hes taking about having the DSG and switching between manual and auto... not a manual transmission and DSG.

DSG is a newer technology, older style tiptronic (which is what he said) gearboxes are slower and sluggish compared to manual.

I too am interested to know how you can hold a gear in an auto in real life, this is the first ive heard of it.

Not always, Jaguars ZF automatic was quicker than a manual when shifting gears in sport mode. It depends on the car. Modern torque converter automatics, like Mercedes-Benz 7-tronic transmission actually change faster than some of the DSG gearboxes. Also, DSG transmissions tend to bog down a little when starting from a full bore standing start. The plates need to time to load up or they'll fry.

Either way, they are quicker than manuals. I would like to see a return of the hold gear function in GT, I found it quite useful. I use automatic transmissions in GT (weird considering I use manual in Race 2007/GTR evo) and did find this a big help, giving that final extra RPM. Always handy with VTEC Honda's!

The autos I've driven all have the option to hold the car in a lower gear. In a 4spd auto you have "D", "3", "2" and "1". D lets the car change gears freely, 3, 2 and 1 will not let the car change higher than 3, 2 and 1 respectively. My Dad's car's brakes have overheated and failed more than once going down hills, so now we just pop it into 3rd going down a steep hill to ease the load on the brakes. :P

Hmm.. well if that's all he meant, then im sure everyone's heard of that. I thought he meant some kind of inbuilt function. Actually to be honest i thought he was full of crap :P

Obviously this wouldnt affect anything in a game, but i have heard that by using the 1,2,3, etc causes additional strain on the transmission and can really shorten it's life.

Most modern automatics do away with the 1,2,3 function anyway. Generally, they now only have a D, P, N and R. Sports cars may have an LC function, and the new 370Z has some sort of auto-blip function on its MANUAL transmission. I can't remember what they call it, but it basically blips the throttle on downshifts, matching the rev's to the gear to provide a smoother change...

My friend's Alpina shifts just fine don't know where your getting that idea from, also holds gears in S mod.

who's talking crap?

The point I was making is that ALL real-life automatics have the option to stay in a particular gear either by selecting the relevent slot (i.e P,R,N,D,3,2,1) or using tiptronic in manual mode using +/-
That is what the 'gear hold' simulated in GT4 and I would welcome it's return. Agreed I prefer full manual but that's not to everyone's taste.

For the record, the Tiptronic equiped 911 turbo accelerated quicker than the manual version.

P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1, is a real automatic gearbox, the automatic transmission in GT is something completely different. It just means that the game shifts for you, but the gears are the same as with manual.

I used that gear hold in GT3 back then to finally learn to concentrate on shifting and switched then to manual, so it would be nice for other people to learn, but thats it, has nothing to do with realism.

Yeah but these are all newer transmission's, im talking about cars from the late 90's early 2000's when tiptronic transmission started appearing on more mainstream cars.

The first 911 to use this is the 997 which is still really new, as stated above, several times, im talking about older cars.

yeah but the manual FTO could own a R32 GTR just ask jackie chan...

Then clearly Jackie Chan is a fool

Just ask jackie chan haha :P I liked that gear hold feature tbh, because for some reason when I'm playing casual 2 player with mates I don't like to go all serious in the manual. Save that for later ;)

Isn't Porsche's Tiptronic and Mercedes's over use of their flappy paddle gear system (don't know what it's called) just automatic transmissions that allow for manual input? I mean that they are pure automatics and can decide for themselves to change gears, but for fun you can change them too. And isn't VW's DSG an actual sequential manual that is automated, so it requires the driver to change the gears?

I confused myself right now actually...:boggled:

Not to mention the Vauxhall Corsa Easytronic which is a manual gearbox and clutch controlled by an ECU and some solenoids .....

Mercedes are Auto transmissions with auto and manual control, while the Porsche and VW are manual transmissions with auto and manual control.

I hope this feature does come back. I used to use it when I drove the F1 car in GT4. Automatic was great for shifting 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, but I like to hold the upshifts for 5th, 6th and 7th because I could time when the revs started to bounce on those gears much better.
