The FIA World Rally Commission is proposing to change the rules so that no team may enter three drivers all of whom have won WRC events. This is to stop the teams with the best cars and biggest budgets signing all the best drivers.
This is obviously aimed at the PSA teams of Peugeot and Citroen. Citroen would have to drop one of McRae/Sainz/Leob and Peugeot would probably drop two drivers from Burns/Rovanpera/Panizzi.
Rovanpera and Panizzi are, I hear, considering leaving Peugeot anyway hoping to get a full 14 round programme with a works team.
Ford currently have no winning drivers on their team and Subaru have two, but only plan on running two cars for a while anyway. The minnows, Skoda and Hyundai have one each and Mitsubishi's Alistair McRae has not yet won.
This change would force some stars into lesser teams and would move young drivers into top cars. But say Peugeot signed Pykalisto for 2004, and he won a rally, he might be out a top drive within a year!
It would also reduce the value of top drivers to the teams. Does anyone have any opinions on this rule change.
