It is a long article so I will just post the link.

Not really sure if I understand it, maybe if she actually downloaded more than anyone else, but she only did 24 songs.

I think now they will have to charge everyone that has pirated songs to pay. I guess we will have a surplus after everyone pays there billion dollar fine.

that sucks. Honestly, leave her alone. Take me instead! (I'm protected by the Young Offenders Act) Yay for Canada's pathetically weak justice system (on kids)

She gets ordered to pay $2,000,000 for downloading 24 songs. Meanwhile... Donte' Stallworth gets 30 days in jail for getting drunk and killing a pedestrian with his car.

It almost makes sense. Almost.

Isn't that a bit too much? I was just reading it. I believe that they asked for too much though for the lack of evidence but I am naive at explaining it. Though that I do want some affordable site that we can get Mp3's off from instead of Itunes.

Some are 75 cents at Amazon.

80,000$ per song. Wow.
And they wonder why everyone was/is stealing from them:lol:
That's a joke, please don't flame me.

The company did say they are willing to settle, even still. for 3-5 grand.
3-5 grand though....is still 30+ dollars per CD worth on only 1700 songs.

Are you kidding, nothing is more valuable than some poorly overproduced auto-tuned pop song that gets played over and over and over everyday on the radio, only to be forgotten by most everyone a month or two after it comes out and gets replaced by some other poor overproduced auto-tuned song. It makes perfect sense.

She was found guilty of copyright infringement for making the songs available (i.e. sharing/uploading), and presumably in 24 known cases, the songs were actually downloaded by someone. Doubtless she shared far more than that (she was accused of having 1700 songs available at one point), and for each song that is shared illegally that someone else actually downloads, she could have been fined $150,000, although she was actually fined $80,000 per song. But given that...

This case was the only one of more than 30,000 similar lawsuits to make it all the way to trial. The vast majority of people targeted by the music industry had settled for about $3,500 each

... you have to say she deserves what she gets.

That isn't what happened, but it wouldn't make sense in any case simply because the latter sentence is far too lenient, so it's not a great comparison to draw really. As for this woman, she deserves it, not only for breaking the law by sharing files, but for being so stupid as to try to deny it, or blame her children.

2 million is a bit ridiculous (and they know she can't pay that), but these people are getting in trouble for sharing songs, not necessarily downloading them. The RIAA is going after the big time uploaders.

The recording industry has blamed online piracy for declines in music sales,...
bad music has nothing to do with it, of course

...although other factors include the rise of legal music sales online, which emphasize buying individual tracks rather than full albums

So the rise in music sales is causing a decline in music sales.:odd:

I can understand that - people no longer have to fork out £10 for a CD album simply to access one song that was otherwise unavailable (i.e. not on sale as a single) but that they can now buy individually for 79p... but the music industry always had that coming. Obviously, that's going to dent profits, because people are no longer forced to fork out money for songs they don't want. But long term, it is a wise strategy. Whereas before, £10 would buy you a few songs you wanted, and several you didn't, you can now get £10 of music you actually want, so the consumer is now getting the best possible value for money, and hence has much more incentive to buy legally than before.

Also, I changed the thread title to more accurately reflect the event 👍

Well, she is unlikely to pay that and will end up having to take the recording companies offer of an out-of-court settlement. Clearly the details of the case are far more complex as you read them and I won't give my opinion on people like here or I get told off.

We will see more of this and rightly so, it's about time we stop the thieving little toe-rags and protected our laws and dignities.

It could have been far worse. A guy in Mexico was sentenced to listen to Billy Ray Cyrus for 12 hours a day for 3 months :ill:

That is cruel. It is! And it enables me to put this woman's sentence in a so much better perspective. The bitch should burn and all her family for her dastardly crime. It is because of people like her that we have the financial crisis, the mexican flue, an Iranian non-religious revolution and of course global warming. Burn you bitch, burn!
