Ok, to get the basic gist of this series, imagine the following pack racing around Monza, Spa or Le Mans-
All have roots clearly grounded in the car they're based on. The structure, configuration and engine capacity of each will be exactly the same as the road going versions. The Lambourghini, for example, has the same 6.2 V12 and tubular steel framework, only gaining aerodynamics kit, a sequential gearbox, Larger brakes, centre hub wheels and a rollcage.
So far, there has been just one deviation from the moves to return to recognisable, production based machines. Maserati attempted to introduce the MC12- a car too extreme to compete on even terms. A token 25 road-going MC12s, with an advanced carbon and Nomex chassis tub and carbonfibre bodywork, will be built each year, for 600,000 euros apiece.
Demands have been made for it to be given an Aerodynamiccly neutral undertray, and a narrower track, before it can compete.
Fair play to the desicion-makers, who told Maserati it was moving the goalposts to far, too quickly.
