Last weekend my friends and I drove down to Sydney for World Time Attack, which is held at Sydney Motorsport Park (or Eastern Creek to most people).
For those who don't know much about the World Time Attack Challenge, it's a large annual time attack event with a large number of international entries (read: Japanese) and local teams all trying to set new lap records around the circuit.
The cars in the Pro and Pro Am class are extremely modified, which massive aerodynamic work and engine swaps and while there are some rules on the extent of the modifications and eligible cars, they are very wild cars with absolutely crazy budgets. The only difference between these classes is the driver - Pro Am can't use professional racing drivers.
There is also the Clubsprint and Open classes. My favorite would be the Open class - the modifications aren't as wild as the Pro/Pro Am classes but the cars are all very well prepared race cars from smaller teams and competition is fierce. I think I like this category as it's more realistic - anybody with a few good people and the right know how can enter and prepare a car and be somewhat competitive, all the drivers are amateur. It's what I strive to do in the future. In the Clubsprint class its basically close to stock racing with minor modifications allowed.
There was also a Formula Drift event with cars like Mad Mike's quad rotor RX-7 coinciding and some great cars doing demo laps like Nigel Petrie's Engineered to Slide drift ute, the Mazda 767B and also a bloody awesome little Peugeot gymkhana car, built by a young kiwi in his home workshop, featuring a Formula Renault engine. It was a real highlight for me, the speed and agility of it, the noise, the flames, the looks. It was just the complete package, it looked insanely fun. I have video of all of this but I haven't gotten around to compiling it and posting video yet. Once I do I'll post it in here.
Anyway, here are some of my favorite photos, and here is a link to the slideshow of the rest of them.. I haven't uploaded every photo and also didn't post up any from the show and shine but may put up a separate album later on.
