Would a hands-free drift be possible?

Would it be possible to only use the wheel to start turning the car, and then release it and let it do whatever it wanted to do, while keeping the car in control by only using the throttle?

There is a racing technique called a "4 wheel drift", but it isn't really a "drift" as you would think of it. You utilize a very slight slip angle to minimize steering input and maximize the grip of the tires. Not for showing off, but for taking a corner faster.

On the other hand, if you drift an AWD car, you're pretty much always drifting without steering inputs. Just initiate the drift, straighten the front wheels, and use the throttle and brakes to adjust line/speed.

;)

But you would still need to hold the steering wheel, I think he means letting go of the wheel, hence the Handsfree.. :)

only way i can see this possible is if you were the super-duper drift master himself on a perfectly level ground, start the drift, get to full-lock and balance the car with throttle, but straightening out would probably be impossible. You may be able to drift hands free if you can stop/hold the wheel with your left leg :sly:

It would probably fail on a G25 because the wheel doesn't spin fast enough most of the time to hold the drift it usually needs a little help.

Its definitely impossible I think.

When you release the wheel, it'll just slammed to the opposite direction, in turn doing too much counter-steering and then the car will just swing itself out.

You'd have to keep holding on to the wheel because not all corners require maximum angle when we counter-steer. Many are midway. And if we do require to turn the wheel all the way in the opposite direction, it would be only for a short period of time.

I've never done it in real life, so I'm just basing this on my experience with my game wheel.

You could catch it with your knee in theory.

Lol.

I did not thought of that, true. But then again, you'd have to have long legs to be able to throttle control with your foot and adjusting steering with the knees, at the same time.

I'm guesing you been watching some initial D and are wondering if it was possible to pull of that Bunta move when he is drifting then lights a cigarette and gest on with it!

I'm going to gues unless you have a perfect angle and you are at full lock it might be possible to drift with no hands for a very short period of time. Definantly not enough to light a cigarette thats for sure. lol

i think he just watched this haha.. and no its impossible. The way they did it in this advert is by disconnecting the steering wheel and remotely sliding the car. As you can see it turns more than 900 degrees

Negative. What you saw drifting was a stunt driver. The guy in the car before the cut is actually off the set somewhere recreating what he was doing. Thats how most of the car shots are done anyway. Theres no way they "disconnected" the steering wheel and remotely slid the car.

I've performed hands-free drifts before, but not in GT5 yet. My first one was in GT2....I believe I was racing an STi at Grand Valley. Got in one of the hairpins, got sideways, and let it fly! :)

It's like surfing--every so often you catch the perfect wave or whatever. But while driving a car, you catch the perfect angle, get sideways, and let the steering go! You're not full-opposite lock, true, but you're still sideways under power. The trick is then to get out of the drift/slide and get back on your feet without some major calamity.

hands free donut with oposite lock is possible. when you start a donut and your back kicks out let your steering wheel goit will keep spinning opposite way. if you can match the throttle to the spin it can be done it wont be even circle or smooth but durable. now in the game if you use a lift of technique and hit the break at the crucial moments very difficult and I forgot to say probably it will have to be at a full opposite lock so that wheel cant turn any more.

I did the worlds first and only recorded no hands drifting but to top that again it was a perfect figure of eight

It’s been great to read some of the posts on here of people saying it’s impossible and can’t be done.
I’ll explain how it’s done and you can hear from the revs of the car what I’m doing.

When your in the drift there is a rear wheel speed that can be maintained to allow the steering to go light and controlled in one place via the throttle adjusting the rear wheel speed . At that point of steering lightness if you were to put in too much wheel speed you would full lock and spin out, not enough wheel speed and the steering wheel will want to straighten up which means you can control what the steering wheel does with the throttle
To transition you come off the gas to straighten up and before the line of perfect straightens you jump on the gas to stop it from straightening up and to get the transition but then immediately off the gas so as you don’t full lock it and spin out then maintain the wheel speed and repeat that process to do a perfect figure of eight.
The light weight flywheel the m5 has allows you to get on and off the power extremely quickly and this couldn’t have been done without that upgrade
There are people in the Guinness book of workd records who have awards and fame for crushing 20 water melons in under a minute yet I’ve only had less than a thousand views on what I believe is the best car control video ever made

There are videos with Ken block with a guy drifting with his foot steering the car with his other foot as he has no hands
I just used the throttle and nothing else
No knees that touch it either just the throttle not even a left foot brake

Please forwards this on to as many people as possible and let see if I can get this put in that record book not as the fastest time of doing but for the fact I’m the only person in the works who has ever recorded this on video and posted it up

I’ve tried to find anything about anyone whose ever done it before and can’t

Here’s the video
Enjoy the 4.9 V8 short ratio 4:1 diff M5

Please post this up

Enjoy 🤗
