THE CUBE HAS RISEN

Tomorrow comes a day too soon in Japan as Nissan has already released a load of pictures of both the USDM and JDM Cube, which is to be "unveiled" tomorrow at the LA Auto Show. This eccentric little box is vying for the same niche as the polarizing Scion xB. Japanese Cubes are powered by a 107 Horsepower, 109 lb-feet Torque 1.5L fourbanger fitted to a CVT transmission. Drive setups include front and all-wheel drive. The configurations coming to the States currently remains unknown. Check back tomorrow for the official US specifications and more photos as they roll in from our guys in the City of Angels.

Yay-ish. I wasn't overly impressed by the Versa, but I'd likely take to the Cube a little more easily. Thing is, the "cheap" market is getting a little full. Lets hope Nissan can make it stand out easily.

Ugh, I really really want this thing to succeed, but damn is it fugly!:nervous:
Although truth be told I only want it to succeed because I want o be able to purchase a USDM VW Polo sometime in the next ten years.

Damn that's ugly. My aunt is gonna love it.

Took them this long to sell the Cube in the US...

you mean them boobs STILL haven't swapped the rear door and phantom c pillar to the other side yet? yeesh. why won't Japan learn that lesson?

Because that's a shot of the new Japanese model. The US model may have that remedied.

Fugly is as fugly does. I love it. :D Give it a 2.0 turbo-engine and it'll be perfect.

I've always found it really amusing that the car is different on each side. Not to say it's bad but just really odd to look at. I don't hate the car though, although I probably would never want to own one, much like the Scion xB. Boxy vehicles are rather practical though and I bet you can fit a ton of stuff in there.

I doubt this will sell great here in the US, many Americans still enjoy boring cars that are rather basic in styling. This might be a bit to radical.

Well, I like the interior. I don't like the way they've managed to make the outside look 25 years older than the last one, though - it's like looking at an S13 Silvia that went through a crusher.

No center console up front!? They'd better have a fold-down arm rest planned; Americans will not stand for it.

The main reason why the current xB has been coated in failsauce is that they catered to the older people who were buying them. They made it larger, heavier, shoved a Camry engine under the hood and made it ten times uglier. When the smaller sibling, the xD, is the superior product... There is a problem.

My guess is that if Nissan can push the Cube out at a low-low price (say, around $10-12K), they'll sell quite a few of them. People are looking for small, affordable, and otherwise efficent cars... It sounds like the Cube has it in spades.

MOAR FROM TODAY'S DEBUT:

The Nissan Cube is hoping to capture the boxy chic market the Scion xB pioneered when it goes on sale in the US market next year. We think the Cube has a lot going for it. When it does arrive the funky little 2009 Nissan Cube will sport the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Nissan Versa, good for 122 HP and 127 lb-ft of torque. These will come mated to either Nissan's CVT transmission or a six-speed manual, for those who like to stand out in a crowd and row their own gears. Further differentiating the unique econobox from the rest of the market will be the "water drop" interior accents in the headliner and controls that give the appearance of rippling water. As with the Fit and Scion, the Cube will come loaded with features such as a sliding "sofa style" bench, remote keyless entry, an iPod-ready sound system and standard ABS. Buyers will also be treated to a host of other dealer-added accessories that could help propel the odd wagon into the hearts and homes of budget-conscious-yet-trendy buyers.

Actually, the interior quality is better than I thought. I do wish they would have chosen the 1.6L over the 1.8L, but I'll survive. I'd want this to be a hyper-cheap model, and nothing else. I'm very interested to see what it is like when it gets out there on the streets, but nevertheless, in this segment... I'm waiting for the Fiesta.

Actually....I want one. I want one very much. Ugly? Meh, I dunno, seems alright to me. Funky? Definitely.

Hell, it out xBs the xB. Make mine a stick.

That, sir, is what happens when someone hits an original Nissan Cube with a bathtub and an old-fashioned phone.

I'd buy it.

grammas'll be snatching this up in no time!

yeah, Japan learned FAST (for ONCE). do I have to remind you that Americans Lurve CUbes! if it's got a straight line somewhere, it's pounced on. of it's got curves It reminds people of two things
1. Jaw Dropping Insurance rates
2. 20 years of front drive slushboxes with 140 hp

now, get away from the friggin refrigerator colored interiors, and I'll think about it.

Here's my thing... I like the xB, but dislike the Cube (maybe since I'm not a big Nissan guy). This looks worse than the Cube as in Gran Turismo 4. The headlights are kind of like some mid-late 1990s Nissans. Not terrible-looking, but not very cool to me. This is a fail for me. Approval: 60%.

I like it.

That 1.8 liter engine is actually said too be pretty economical... I give it a thumbs up... pending on how it actually drives...

Huh? What happened to the design. The pre-facelift version is much nicer IMO much more simple, cleaner lines. This facelift one lookes like it's melting. Just like the facelift Bb, they seem to have taken the charm away with overdesign.

-> Meh, I like the Soul better. Its too plain! Like McDonald's cone sundae plain.

-> Anyhow, I'll re-verify that when I get there this weekend and see on what I do really think in person.

So far...
1. Fit
2. Cooper
3. Clubman
4. Soul
5. Yaris 5-Door
6. Versa 5-door
7. SX4
8. xB
9. xD
10. Cube

WAYT! YOU MISSED TEH PONTIAC G3!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, its that damn Fiesta that is going to ruin this party for everyone. If Ford can bring it here as cheap as what I think they can, the only cars to really knock it off would be the far-more-expensive Cooper or the just-as-cute Fit.

-> The G3 is an Aveo in a drag which its essentially a Daewoo, no thanks. ;)

^ I could have included the Accent SE, but its a 3-dr. it wouldn't seem right.

-> Yeah, yeah, yeah about the Fiesta. Sure its fresh 'n new, plus an F-150-like model configuation in Europe. It will be good, its just a matter of time on how much (content/price ratio) is going to be.

-> I'd still take the Fit, its interior configuration could make the others seem impractical. All Honda needs to do is to bring the smaller engine to the Stateside and all is good.

I like the new Cube. I was a fan of the old one too, and the new one is subtley different enough for me not to know whether I prefer the old one or the new one. If I could, I'd have the old front end with the new slightly curvier angles (can you have a curvy angle?). The new interior is certainly better than the old one, which looked like this:

nissan-cube-cockpit.jpg

Though again, that's personal opinion. Some might like the cubed interior to go with the more cubist exterior...

The good thing for me is that apparently, Nissan are thinking of bringing the Cube to the UK officially. I've seen a number of them about as imports and I think the Japanese makers are learning that the UK loves the curious cars they produce. It may be 15 years or more since the Figaro was in production but they're everywhere now - there's a definite market for Japanese oddities.

Personally, I love odd, small Japanese cars so I'm more than happy that the rest of the world is slowly getting to sample them. Closest we get in the UK at the moment is the Daihatsu Materia, but I suspect that sells in small numbers more due to the name than people being put off by the styling. If it were Toyota main dealers selling that thing it'd fly out, I reckon:

lrg_article_11080-img_0.jpg

they haven't sent the Cube to the UK yet?!

good gravy, america gets a small car before EUROPE does! (or, at least a part of it)

as for the Materia...knowing toyota, you've got the Box allready :P Cube shouldn't be far behind.
