just when i'm really doing well on a race, my ps3 shuts down and wont re-boot, yellow light comes on then flashing red one. Its the original 60gb version so cant run the fan test and eject disc, how bad can my tues eve get!!

searched all over the net and you tube, no permanent fix for ps3 once YLOD has appeared, but does anyone know how to eject my gt5 disc??

have tried holding down eject whilst booting etc, but this method dooesnt work on 60gb model. :grumpy:

thanks for any help

I don't know the answer to your question but if worse comes to worst you can just open the ps3, take the drive out and use a paperclip to open the release mechanism on the drive. (I presume it has one, like any other PC drive?)

thanks for that, was trying to avoid taking apart but it appears thats the only option, looks like i will have to save up for slimline model now

I stripped down my 80gig after it did that, and I couldn't find an eject button - the whole thing is encased with a slot for the disc!

Fortunately the stuck disc is an old game and it was the kids PS3 - so I am still playing GT5.

Have you tried pressing the eject button with the PS3 still off? My PS3 phat died with a disc in it and I managed to get the disk out by pressing the eject button.

Mine did the same thing last week, somehow a combination of button presses managed to get my disk out.

I don't know what i did specifically but it did come out.

i then pulled it apart and repaired it and i'm using it again :P

YLOD is easily fixable. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube and Google. Also, search your local Craigslist and see if anyone can repair it. Better than paying Sony and waiting weeks.

My PS3 also Ylod'd i dismantled it to get Gt5 out then i used the hairdryer trick to get it running again, i made a backup of the HDD so i hope when i copy it over to my new PS3 will be able to play GT5 from where i left off

YLOD is usually a power supply failure. You can find them on sale on ebay and other places around the internet. They run between $60 and $100 US generally, cheaper than the $150 Sony charges. It's not too hard to replace. I replaced the one in my 60GB with one from an 80GB whose Blu-ray drive died and have had no problems since. The +5v, +12v, and total wattage is a little lower than the 60GB PSU, though, so there may be some risk in the long run.

Getting the case open is kind of a pain because there is like 9-10 screws in it. There is five screws holding the power supply, one of them being the ground. Don't forget to screw this back on or bad things will happen.

The eject trick didn't work for me and I tried all the various methods. I did as I mentioned above: took it to some dude who posted an ad on Craigslist. He finished in 2 hours and charged me $35.

It probably works better than ever now. The majority of the issue is the CPU/GPU's thermal compound losing conductivity with the heat sink. Over time, the thermal compound deteriorates and becomes useless. The guy applied Arctic 5 thermal compound (one of the more popular ones for PC builders) and it has worked like a charm ever since.

Ive read there's a way to get your PS3 to temporarily work using a towel and a hairdryer. It should work long enough to get your game out. Google it.

thanks for all your help and advice guys

Don't feel brave enough to strip the console apart, so chickened out and took a local computer shop in my town. He claims he can fix it in 24 hours if its a minor fault £30-40, or if it needs a motherboard due to overheating could be £100 and a week to repair..:ouch:

Hope he can fix it soon as cant afford new console and missing gt5 already!!

it appears that way- or perhaps i just overcooked the console playing it!

i'm not really a heavy gamer , 'only' about 2-3 hours most eve's , but that was pre GT5, :indiff:

Just a small question there, how was your PS3 set ? standing or on the bottom ? I think it could do with overheating ?

it sits just horizontal , never on it side. Central heating has been on a fair bit as its very cold here in uk at mo, wether that has affected the overheating of it

Well I noticed that when the ps3 is horizontal, the bottom in contact with the ground/table gets very hot... whereas it doesn't when standing vertical...
I'm getting paranoid now xD, so it's always vertical, but thanks for this info, i'll try and ask other YLOD PS3 owner ;), sorry for your loss :nervous:

Happened to my 40gb ps3 while playing CODMW2. About 2 years after I sent it into sony to fix the problem with my blu ray drive that wasn't reading the discs. So they wanted another 150 and I said no way.

Then GT5 came out and I had to get another so now I have a 250gb slimline. If it happens to this one, I'm probably going to go crazy.

Only problem with my PS3 was it getting stuck because of the heat, i placed two wooden planks under it to give it some more room, you know, to lose the heat also on the bottom. Never had any problems again. (PS3 fat, 40GB, horizontal)

This happened to my original 60 gig a year ago and I had a disc stuck as well. I got it repaired at a local shop (there was something wrong with the motherboard and it had to be replaced) but they managed to get the disc out while taking it apart so you should get your gt5 disc back.

EDIT: My ps3 is still working to this day

good idea, same idea as getting it vertical somehow, but no dust intering the vents so even better 👍

👍 Good idea. I´ll do that as well.
I have the same model, by the way. Its probably the best one. I´ve had it for 4 years, in a 75 to 88 farenheit weather and it has never showned any problem at all.

I just drove the Rally Event on Prof. when my console turned off. I have the GT5 CE and this is a drama that my game stucks in my 60GB model, is there any way to get it out instead of breaking the black mask ? It happend right on christmas evening, it´s catastrophal. After it turned off i watched TV and then just a new movie commercial appeared and a new movie was offered to the cinemas called "the games is played" after that i was down as my ps3... **** happens.
