Your Dream Computer for Gaming (realistic)

Um, DUAL AMD Athelon, don't really care what speed as long as it's recent. As long as it's for gaming and videos and picture editing &c, a 20" CRT flatscreen(not flatpanel) monitor, a Microsoft wave-type keyboard, Microsoft Intellipoint Mouse, 10/100/1000 ethernet card, Soundblaster Audigy 2, 128MB ATI Radeon 9500(or is it 9400).

If it was just my ideal dream machine, I'd rather have a dual-Xeon, and have a 30" cinematic LCD screen by Apple, or just have a Dual G4 w/ the same display. I'd keep the keyboard, mouse, and stuff. Oh, I'd also have a Bose surround sound system:D

I chose all of those products because from what I've read and the knowledge I've acquired over the years, those are the components that are the best for the specific functions I'd want. Sure, I COULD have a GForce, but companies are taloring toward ATI now because ATI has better technology on their cards, if not better clock speeds.

ah.... I've always thought atI as better than Geforce...
now i know that i have a reason to back it up...
c'mon people, i'm SURE that all of you have a dream machine

3 LCD monitors? Sure, it would be nice, but LCD monitors suck for gaming. Seriously, CRT's are better because of the technoligy behind them. LCD's are better for things that don't involve gradients or fast-moving objects. That's why CRT's are also better for videos and DVD's than LCD's. If I had a multi-monitor system, I'd have 1 LCD (probably 18 inch) and 2 20" CRT's. But that would be a realistic setup. Otherwise I'd have 2 30" Apple Cinema LCD's and one 20" CRT

i guess you could say my current setup is my dream computer for gaming right now.
Its specs are:
AMD 2100+ (not the best cpu but its good enough)
8x AGP MSI KT4VL KT-400 motherboard
DDR 400 512 RAM
8x AGP Nvidia Ti4200
16x DVD drive
48x12x48 CD-RW drive
Floppy
USB 2.0 card
400 watt PS
Raidcom 8-Bay Case with window(Dual case fans underneath the window)
Windows XP Pro

There are a few things I want to do with it like add a Etched Biohazard symbol like the one at www.harddrive.com under mods and some 80mm fan biohazard covers also found there but its pretty much what I want in a computer right now. I would love to have a 21 inch monitor though, as I have a 14 inch for the time being while I save up cash to buy a bigger one.

well, with a 14" monitor, you don't need the resolution up too high on the games, do you. The plus is that you'll probably get better FPS rates than the rest of us

AMD Athlon 64 3300+
3GB DDR II 400 RAM
NvidiaQuadro FX 1000 8xAGP
Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
200GB Western Digitial Hardrive
Three 21-inch CRT Monitors
300gb+ Hard Drive

Thats all for gaming

OK, can someone give me a list of some stuff which would be good for a computer for under 6,000 (about 3200 US)excluding screens, keyboards, and mouses??
So far i have:
512MB Ram
120 GB Hard Drive
2.53 gHz Pentium 4 (what is an Athlon chip???)
DVD compatible with an inbuilt CD Burner

Help me out here ;)

I'm not one to give you the best info, but an Athlon chip is the biggest Pentium competition, they're made by AMD.

Yes, I know. I would use the LCD for Flight Simulator. LCDs are perfect for displaying the cockpit guages.

5GB is not possible now for the home user. 32-Bit processors support up to 64GB of memory. But, most motherboards today only have 3 or 4 memory slots.

Hehehe, converting a server machine into a gaming machine, whoa.....
What about 64 - bit processors? How much memory can they support?

Thats easy, a brand spankin new 1.42 dual cpu Power Mac. Those things are freakin expensive! Don't get me wrong, I love macs and all, but its ridiculous in price when you can get a high end pc for not even a fraction of that.

It's all what you want to use the computer for. If you are REALLY into 3d modelling, photo/image editing, and stuff like that, then Apples are the way to go by far. If you want to game or want a low-end PC just to browse the interent, do some basic word processing, spreadsheets, then IBM/type PC's are the way to go. I'd rather have an Apple than an IBM, but then again, I wouldn't be able to play the three games I like that are Windows-only:
America's Army: Operations
Sim City 4
Civilization 3
I wonder how much $$ it would take to BUILD your own Apple-based computer....

Same here. I wouldn't be able to play UT2003 or Counterstrike on a mac.

Heh, they did it on The Screensavers on Techtv using non apple parts(mostly) and put it in a modified ATX case.. I'm sure I could find the article on their website if I looked.

USB Ports
Unsure; need recommendations $150

Most motherboards have USB ports on them, at the same place as where you plug your mouse, keyboard etc in... Or, if the case you get has some, then you just connect them up to your motherboard (I think). So then thats $150 off of your total.

Rear Panel I/O
2 x USB 2.0 ports
1 x RJ45 LAN port
1 x LPT
2 x COM ports
Audio (1 x Line-in / 1 x Line-out / 1 x MIC) connector
PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse connector
1 x Game/Midi port

See?

[EDIT]If your parents are a bit hesitant at first, try and lower the price by keep some things from your old computer, like speakers, sound card, vid card and then upgrade after a while :) ;)[/EDIT]

[#2 EDIT]The mobo you chose has integrated sound as well, so you don't need a sound card... I think, might pay to check up on that....[/EDIT]
