I wish someone would bring broadband out here in the boonies. You can't get much slower than this.

The only other option is satellite and do to a bunch of cry babies that went over their monthly bandwidth and got throttled back till they get caught up and then complaining about it on the web. Dad won't get a broadband hook up through that type of hook up. WiMax is suppose to come on line in Nashville this month and hopefully they will add the tower that is suppose to go in about 3 miles down the road soon too. I hate this 26.4 Kps dial-up not counting when the thing is completely down like it was a few weeks ago for almost two weeks.

This is my college's internet right now:

Good download speed and a lot better upload speed than the line at home.

Can anybody tell me what the best value-for-money Internet Provider in the Uk is? I am currently with Sky Broadband, but for my area it isn't very fast - around 3mb is all I'm getting at moment, which works fine for some of my games, but pathetic for others. I want to switch to a better one. I'm not particularly bothered about Sky TV, I only want a decent broadband connection. It was the girlfriend who wanted Sky and since she is no longer part of my life, I don't need or want it.

The ones that tempt me are TalkTalk or Virgin Media, so if any of you out there are with either of these companies, any info regarding them would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Can you not get the bigger Sky packages? We pay £10 for 20MB broadband and that is easily enough for gaming.

Ah, missed the second part of the paragraph. Value for money, nothing compares with Sky imo.

You'll probably find the only way to get a faster internet connection is to change your BT line to cable (i.e. Virgin)

The below website is good. Put your postcode in then click on the "see detailed report" under the map to see what other people in your area and who they are with.

Unfortunately I am not in an area where Sky gives great broadband coverage, so I am only with Sky Connect, which is unlimited downloads for £17 a month - but with only a 2.5mb speed. Sky themselves said that they couldn't give me a better broadband connection.
So I need to switch.

Just checked the website that Neal suggested. I can only get standard Broadband. High Speed and Cable are not available where I am.

This is amazingly quick for Australian net. It's optic fibre with 2 gig a month free or something. By comparison to ADSL2 mine was something like 8 meg down and 0.5 up which is considered normal. I just have to change to a service provider and cancel my old telstra service and I should get more speed apparently

Edit: And I don't live anywhere near Adelaide, South Australia (S.A is a state) so I don't know why it's going there.

i got some wildly different download speeds, so here's what i deemed to be a reasonable measurement after five trial runs from home via cable modem

Not bad really. Never had bottle necking on the internet side of things.
I had a drop in speed last week so I posted on the TalkTalk forum to see what was up and the lady kindly bumped up my line quality, no hassle at all.

And now it's even faster than before. (Even though I technically shouldn't be able to get more than 6Mb because of the BT line outside my house)

TalkTalk has now put me on another line profile and it's now.

So I recommend everyone inquire to their internet provider and ask if there is a faster profile.

Satellite internet (Hughesnet)

Forget stated speeds but I'm positive it was above 2Mb.

What I'm actually getting is 128kbps :(

Unfortunately where I live satellite internet or USB modems (those little device thingies you plug into the side of a laptop or something) are the best available.

Your ping is nothing.

And if you think that's bad...
I accidentally deleted this part, sorry

Shoot me. :banghead:
(bold = me)
PSSSH. Check this out, man.

and:

My download isn't BAD, but it's not what I was promised.

It's the other specs that irk me so much.

That could be better but there is no server in Queensland :/.

And that is the same it has been for the last few years due to having the incorrect internet cables in my entire suburb installed. I will be moving house soon so I should finally get off this ADSL 1 line and go on a 2+ line :).
