All of mine are PS1/PS2/PS3 iterations (a lot of the early games in particular were quite different on PC):

1. NFS III Hot Pursuit (PS1) - Awesome fun, great tracks, loved 2 player and the cops were a nice addition in 1 player

2. NFS IV Road Challenge (PS1) - Not quite as good as the above but cool tracks and the damage element was a little more advanced

3. NFS Shift 2 - Unleashed (PS3) - Many flaws but enjoying this having recently got it

4. NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2) - Actually got this years ago but didn't play it through, need to pick it up again. Captured some of the thrills of its PS1 forebear but not sure I liked the way you could freeze time and zoom the camera up the road ahead to check for cops

5. The Need For Speed (PS1) - Old now but loved the way this game flowed, felt a little less frantic with swooping hills and a lot of flat out racing.

Special mention for NFS II on the PS1 also, lots of cars and some awesome unlockable novelty tracks but ultimately a little messy. Also liked NFS Porsche 2000, great variety of cars though it lacked a little in pace, and the strange layout of some of the town tracks and Police speed traps grated a little.

Of all of the other games I think i've played demos at least of all of them, but I really really wasn't crazy about them. I think I like my arcade racers generally simple and straight up, I don't need spinning rims, neons, cinematic special effects, gaudy customizations and such (plus the physics often felt really odd to me), but different strokes for different folks :)

I really only cared for NFS Hot Pursuit II and NFS Underground II

1. Need for Speed: Underground 2 (PS2)
2. Need for Speed: Most Wanted Black Edition (PS2)
3. Need for Speed: Road Challenge (PC)
4. Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 (PC)
5. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed (PC)

Well, I own all of the games, so I have grown up with the series.

#1 Porsche Unleashed - fantastic game all round, varied environments, interesting 'Test Driver' and career modes. Really did Porsche proud.

#2 Road & Track: The Need For Speed (SE) - The original, and still a hoot to play. Wished they still made the games like this, good physics for an early 90's game.

#3 Hot Pursuit 2: Great selection of cars, lots of track configurations (can get boring after a while though), Be The Cop mode was fun, but a bit basic and easy.

#4 NFS Most Wanted - Everything Underground 2 was, except in daylight and with the police. Whilst it lacked almost all the cars Underground 2 had (and which Carbon picked up later), it still had a decent roster of cars, and of course those over-the-top police chases. Really the only 'new' generation NFS I like.

#5 High Stakes (PS1) - This game was much better than the PC version in my opinion. Better sounds, better physics and good cop chases. Tracks and cars get an honourable mention.

me too, I own all the games and up till a month ago (new PC still doing installs) was able to play ALL the games. So with that.....

1. MOTOR CITY ONLINE (err OFFLINE now)
shhhssss it works again now in offline mode muhahah. Thanks to some die-hard talented MCOer's. I was able to install on an XP system and play it offline with full graphics, sound, G25 wheel and GUI. ohhh the memories.
BEST NFS ever for parts inventory
no other game had the auctioning system
wear and tear on parts and you are forced to maintain and replace said parts.
decent and fun tracks.
THE CARS, oh the CAR selections! so many great classics to choose from.
I feel so bad for those who never got or will have the chance to try this one. NFS World doesnt even come close!

2. NFS Most Wanted. This is the best modern version of NFS to me. Good selection of all different types of cars, vinyls, parts, driving atmosphere, music, ok physics, story line and the acting always makes me laugh (quote SGT Cross, nice pin-stripe! LOL) and COP CHASES!

3. NFS PU. The physics!!! so much fun getting tail happy with the 356, 550, 911's! Only NFS game to really give you the feel of driving in the ALPS with snow on the mountain top. Had cops, but they only rammed you and hard too! Best game modes, Evolution through the 50 years and even better was factory mode. Man some of those challenges were hard to nail!

4. Long live NFS HS. Look at the community go on this one and its still going even on win 7 64bit!!! mods, mods, mods. To the one who posted earlier that they have not finished this game, shame shame shame on you. Go put your pink slip down and win a car, then toss on some body and part upgrades. Wish we could use these in muli-player or the hot pursuit mode.

5. NFS SE. It was amazing how good the first game is with really good physics, the slide shows and stats with voice overs. The tracks were great, one of the best was that 2nd one part of the Pacific Spirit, coastal something. It was twisty, hilly, and with the traffic and cops was a challenge. Also, the game had great atmosphere and music. Also works with my G25.

I could go on and focus on the best that each in the series has to offer as I like all of them, but thats my 5.

Top 5:
1. High Stakes - Still my favorite after all these years.
2. Underground 2 - I can play this one over and over.
3. Carbon - Liked the ideas, but Black Box's fall was in progress.
4. ProStreet - How's this for blasphemy; flawed and ruined by DLC cars, base game can still be fun.
5. Most Wanted - Was OK, but felt like grasping at straws to me really.
5A. Hot Pursuit (2010)- Good while it lasted, but once I finished single player, never was compelled to pick it up again.

Bottom 5:
1. The Run - With this, Black Box shows that they have no idea what they're doing anymore.
2. Shift - EA was slightly mad when they did this, nice idea but crap in the end.
3. Shift 2 - Did the first sell well enough for this? more of the same.
4. Undercover - Proof the Black Box really doesn't have story writers, and the gameplay was bad to boot.
5. Underground - Not a bad game nessissarily, but gets very restrictive as you near the end.

1. NFSHP II
2. NFS MW
3. NFSHP (2010)
4. NFS Carbon
Yep growing up with hot pursuit 2 it win first place. That what got me into all the car games I own and my interest in cars. Also brings back memorys.

You guys are insane

1. Shift 2 (Semi-sim> Arcade any day)
2. Shift 1
3. Underground
4. NFS 1 Road and Track Edition
5. Porsche Unleashed

The rest are terrible, except maybe high stakes, and the worst of them all is Hot Pursuit for the Xbox 360

1. NFS: Hot Pursuit II I grew up with that game! :D
2. NFS: Most Wanted
3. NFS: Underground 2
4. NFS: Pro Street
5. NFS: Hot Pursuit (2010)

1. NFS III: Hot Pursuit
2. NFS: High Stakes (would be number one if the tracks were shorter :P)

Thats it, I was into GT way too much back then to ever get back into NFS :)

1. The Need foe Speed (ps1)
Amazing game for it's time. It was the real deal back then. Nice flow and pace, good 2 players racing, point to point tracks. Loved it.

2. High Stakes
Also a very nice game. Felt good, the racing was intense.

3. Most Wanted
Never liked Underground, but this was a gem for me. The cars were nice, the racing was intense, the rubberband AI was a bit meh.

4. Hot Pursuit (PS3)
Reminded me a lot the first NFS. But the Burnout mechanics felt somewhat wrong. Great fun online.

5. Shift 2
Rewarding gameplay, nice pace, but buggy. Could have been a lot better, with potential to have given GT and Forza a run for their money, but many times it feels rushed and somewhat unfinished.

I've seen people mentioning Pro Street and The Run. Are they worth it?

The Run? Not really. Pro Street? Hell yea!

1: Most Wanted [2005] - Spent hours getting myself in and out of pursuits. Loved the police system in it.
2: High Stakes [1999] - Got it when I was 6. I still play it once in a while.
3: Hot Pursuit 2 [2002]- Awesome game, IIRC the PC version still has MP on it.
4: Hot Pursuit [2010] - Fun game, although cops in free-roam would've made it better.
5: Shift 2 [2011] - Love the helmet cam in it. Don't play it a huge amount though :(

1. Hot Pursuit 2
2. Most Wanted (2005)
3. Underground
4. Underground 2
5. Hot Pursuit (2010)

1: Underground. Started playing after I finished GT4, still pride myself in beating Eddie with my Dodge Neon. Still THE greatest customizer of all racing sims I have ever played. Got to deck out my entire car to say "VENOM".
2: Hot Pursuit. I love driving around in a car decked out to look like a cop car, and I don't think any other racing sim has a Ford Crown Victoria in it. Also like how when driving a Viper it lets you use the handbrake as an effective method of turning. Tried that in GT5, didn't work.
3: The Run. Loved the whole point-to-point style of racing. While Underground an HP have that, you are really racing in the same places over and over again. What sold the game for me was the "body kit" customization system. Never finished it, I still work at it from time to time, but there is only so much a BMW Z4 can do.

I rented Shift and Shift 2, but never got around to playing them, so that's my list. I still play Underground sometimes, and is the only thing keeping me from selling my PS2. I play HP almost as much as GT5, but it's really only to drive a Koenigsegg CCXR Edition cop car.

1. Shift
2. Shift 2 Unleashed
3. Prostreet
4. Most wanted
5. Hot pursuit 2010

Well what can I say?
I gues I'm a circuit racer :)
