Like most new-to-be BMW series, it's not quite right. BMW was never as understated as Audi, nor as progressive as Alfa Romeo, but it used to have a nice, happy middleground: pleasing, but certainly distinctive. Chris Bangle (BMW head of design) is just not a good designer. He's been riding his [short-lived] success of the Fiat Coupe for way too long.
The new 745i? The original, pre-Bangle sketches were actually interesting. However, after he got his hands on it, it's the monstrosity we have today: slightly bloated, okay detailing, neat curves but nothing excessive...until you get to the disaster that is its trunk.
Now to the Z4. Same problem: the rear sucks, and the rest is plain uninteresting. The front end? Somewhere between a S2000 and the Z9 concept. The rest screams Miata/S2000...until you get to the bootlid. Just what is it with that tail-tip-thingy? And it's got that same overweight look as the new 7. (For more wonderful images:

Look, we all know BMW needed a makeover from the nearly stodgy affectation it's been slowly acquiring, but Bangle was the exact wrong person to do that. Look at Volvo: still a 3-box design but no longer boxy, still FWD (don't forget the 40-series with AWD & 300HP, arriving next year) but no longer stodgy, and quickly becoming so much more enjoyable to drive. Bangle is over-zealous and under-talented.
Sorry for the long post, but let me sum up with this: I signed all the petitions I could find so far (3) to boot Bangle from BMW. Great drives deserve great looks. A good design can be sensational, but sensational design does not mean a good design.
