Since the Forza Motorsport 6 announcements at Microsoft’s E3 press conference landed earlier today, a lot more information about the new game has hit the web. One of the most interesting sources is a lengthy article from Ars Technica, who had a chance to visit Turn 10’s studios last week for an exclusive interview with Dan Greenawalt and other developers on the team.
You should read their full article and watch their developer interviews, but here’s the highlights from the article:
- Turn 10 remains committed to “1080p, 60fps”, despite 24 cars on track at the same time.
- The UK-based Playground Games studio responsible for Forza Horizon 2 has provided lots of help and assistance to Turn 10 with the development of Forza 6.
- The game is designed with the use of “Physically Based Materials”, or PBMs, to help speed up the development. Instead of programming characteristics for each type of material, PBM allows the physical properties of a surface to have a direct, automatic impact on how its rendered.
- Although the game includes night racing and weather effects, there are no transitions. Neither track conditions nor the time of day will change during a race.
- Turn 10 has worked closely with the engineering firm Calspan to help them understand tire dynamics.
- The machine-learning algorithms which power the “Drivatars” have been softened a bit, so they won’t be as aggressive or mean as they were in Forza 5.
- The game will not feature endurance races in the career mode.
YouTube channel MotorWorldHype also had a chance to attend the pre-E3 Forza 6 media session, and captured additional Forza 6 gameplay footage and a lengthy interview with Turn 10 director Dan Greenawalt:
The official Forza site has been updated with additional details outlining the new Loyalty Rewards program, which will provide Forza 6 players with bonus content depending on what they’ve achieved and earned in previous titles in the series, extending all the way back to Forza Motorsport 3. You’ll also be able to import liveries from Forza 5 and Forza Horizon 2.
Pre-orders are also now open; the game will be available in three different editions which include various levels of additional content:

“The machine-learning algorithms which power the “Drivatars” have been softened a bit, so they won’t be as aggressive or mean as they were in Forza 5.”
Hmm… and I had it on “good authority” here that the bots in Forza 4 and 5 were just about paaarfect. I wonder if this means anything…
Anyhow, I’m beginning to have silly thoughts about skipping P CARS and spending the ludicrous amounts of money necessary to play Forzwa 6. But I keep coming to my senses. I dunno… it looks maybe then it looks not, and as of tonight it still looks mostly not. I still have Forza 4 and it’s still got game. I guess we’ll see what I feel like this fall.
I’m still sitting here with an aged PS3 (GT5 & GT6 for racing games, a dozen other titles which I don’t play much anymore) and a Logitech G27 wheel that’s not supported by anything else than my PS3 and my PC. Now with E3 I have to say Forza 6 looks very nice and since there is no sign of a GT7 this year, it is very tempting for me to buy an Xbox One and Project Cars for it… right now. Also buy a new wheel that’s compatible with everything (PC, XBox One, PS4). In september I can buy Forza 6 then.
And maybe… just maybe… when somewhere in this lifetime GT7 magically appears I can still buy a PS4 and GT7 at that point.
What would you guys recommend doing if you were in my situation? For the time being I’m just playing Real Racing 3 on my iPad. :P
Consoles hold their value really well. So really, your risk is just some minor depreciation of your “investment” but you get to enjoy all the XBone games for a couple of years, and if GT7 releases and is a kickarse game, you can sell your XBone if you want, take a small loss, and move to the PS4. Sounds like a no brainer to me, get the XBone + wheel and enjoy some quality racing for a year or two and decide what you want to do about PS4/GT7 down the road.
Sure wish they’d port this game over to pc.
The temptation to switch over to “The Dark Side” is sorely being tested with this game…
I’m guessing the “team Forza” cars will be like the 15th anniversary cars from GT6 then?
“[…]studio responsible for Forza Horizon 2 has provided lots of help and assistance to Turn 10 with the development of Forza 6”
Well, at least a LITTLE it might improve. I always though the Horizon games were the only fun games in the Forza series (I don’t know if the open world aspect is the only reason though. Maybe there’s more than that? Better design? Aesthethics? Events? The variable time [and wheather, on 2]? Which Forza 6 is NOT going to have, they will be fixed only)
No Time & weather transitions! VBR still doesn’t not want an XB1.
Doesn’t not want? That means you DO yes want?
Seriously though, that’s really complicated, deciding if the XB1 is worth it:
+ Forza Horizon 2
– DriveClub
+ Project CARS
– Uncharted, God of War, The Last of Us…
? Halo, Gears of War
– Cross Buy with an awesome, underrated portable
+ GTA V
– Gran Turismo
+ Recently announced backwards compatibility
? Backwards compatibility might be sh*t (like Xbox games on the 360)
A couple passive aggressive comments about Forza here, big surprise… Fact is, Turn 10 is consistently dishing out great games every two years that get better and better. We’re here, still stuck with our standard and premium cars in GT6, among other things. I’m really hoping GT7 will be awesome because Forza is literally winning by miles right now.
^ lol, we’ll see when gt7 comes out.
Standard/premium cars but still more cars, and actual day/night transitions in real time and weather in real time. Simulator that balks at simulating is odd, why do rain if it’s locked rain like locked sunshine? GT3 did wet weather and it was ok and took it up a notch in GT5. Forza did night in the original game and night returns 5 games later…what? The scope of things PD is working on simulating in GT is ludicrous but it’s on par with what PC sims do, will the PD pare back GT7 to make easier for casuals or will they keep pushing forward. Forza 5 was a massive let down, not sure about what it’s winning but a visuals contest when looking at Forza Vista, on track it’s another story. Right now Project Cars is the real deal on consoles, massive grids, wholly functional AI, sounds to die for and a community/dev relationship that is nothing short of astounding. Forza 6 has no clubs, but is relying on some system to match you with players of the same ilk, sounds interesting but still no clubs?!? Clubs were awesome, pool of shared cars, people you can look for to have races with, why fix something that isn’t broke? Haven’t seen anything about GT7 yet, but if the breadth of simulation in GT5&6 is anything to go by, GT7 will be something impressive yet again. Course maker in GT7 alone would trump anything Turn 10 could come up with for Forza 6.
Looks like pCars.
That’s quite a compliment.
Hard to believe GT had nothing to show, & Sony had absolutely nothingness for racing game fans…
-_-
That gameplay video is also the first showing of the Logitech G920!
Car list is going to be 450 so the confirmed cars are just a tiny portion of the total. I’m sure all Forza 5 cars and most Horizon 2 cars will be in.
I’m disappointed with Forza 6, car list isn’t great nor is the track list, no dynamic weather cycles or day to night transitions. I thought the rain would look better then it does. IMO I’m disappointed and will once again skip Forza.
The rain effects look… well, I was thinking that it will look more realistic. *cough* Driveclub *cough*
No V8 Supercars….
I think it’s safe to say that Forza is no longer a simulator, as they don’t advertise it as such, anymore.
But never the less, this new addiction to the frachise should re-ignite the spark the Forza 5 dwindled.
Rio de Janeiro? WAT
I remember when GTPlanet used to be for news about Gran Turismo…
It still is as we got GT6 news today. I don’t see the problem.
100% agree we’ve got forums for forza & project cars put this stuff there.
You should be more upset at the fact that Sony didn’t even meantion a single word relating to the GT series.
Seriously. WTF Sony.
Doesn’t make sense. The number of active GT players is dwindling, coupled with the fact there is no interesting news relating to the series. Seeing as there are forums here for Project Cars, FM and co. it makes perfect sense to target the news of these games to the users of these forums.
Contrary to popular belief this is the news section, not the forums for dedicated talk about each game. Please understand the difference, news is for all news related to the sub-forums on the entire site, thankfully this is nice and neat and not sectioned off leaving people to search for news in an overly complicated news page.
The car list seems decent, but there is huge lack of models from 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s.
Up to 3 i use to like Forza. but after that it just became a soulless. its a soulless two year cycle franchise
But anyway. 3 is still my favorite
Me too. After 3 I never played it again.
To me this looks like a good game. I think the horizon games are trashy nfs clones without the police, but what is it with secs and their yearly release games? AC Unity was a yearly release and look what happened to that
Devs*
