“GAME ON” Museum Exhibit in Japan Inducts Gran Turismo Showcase

The Gran Turismo series has been honoured with a spot in the ‘GAME ON’ exhibit within the Japan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. In this event, which showcases the history of video games, a fully functioning GT cabinet running Gran Turismo 6 can be played with a Thrustmaster T300RS steering wheel (pedals from the T500RS are used, however).

Gran Turismo is placed within the ‘NEXT STAGE’ section of the exhibit highlighting where the gaming industry is headed, as opposed to the general theme of Game On which explores how video games have developed into a modern day industry. GT is described by the tour as a title which “transcends the virtual and real” citing the series’ Vision GT and GT Academy programmes as proof of how Polyphony Digital have made the jump from digital to reality.

There’s no doubt that within the racing genre Gran Turismo has had one of the biggest impacts on the real world, so it’s impressive to see the series rewarded for its efforts within the automotive industry, and also for how it has advanced video games throughout the generations.

When Gran Turismo 1 first hit the original PlayStation it set the foundations for many driving series to come and was undoubtedly a game-changer for those seeking a more realistic experience on console, bringing a ton of fully licensed cars and tracks to the masses. Its cultural impact cannot be understated either, with Gran Turismo arguably one of the most apparent forces in the growth of Japanese automotive industry in the west.

Ultimately this induction into ‘GAME ON’ is another deserving accolade for Kazunori Yamauchi’s brain child. Congratulations, Polyphony!

Thanks Brendon R., great news! We join the others in extending our congratulations to Kaz PD and his dedicated team of game designers. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the GT games and especially the online experiences. True, there is issues with the servers at the moment and we hope some of them can or will be resolved, BUT we as well appreciate the online service is and has been FREE, we pay nothing, zip, nada for it so we’re happy we’re provided them. We do understand PD are working hard to get the next version of the GT series ready and on the market, they need to sell games to keep the franchise going and GT6 has been in our hands a bit over two and a half years, it is old news and likely sales is minimal. Thank you Kaz and Thank you PD,, we’re continuing to enjoy GT6 and are anxiously awaiting the next generation – GT Sport!

    This is great and all…
But GT6 needs help, honestly. It would be great to see Kaz give us more cars and BETTER ONLINE SERVERS than to see him and his game in a museum.

Congratulations to Kaz and the whole team for some well deserved recognition of the historical significance of this game.
