Gran Turismo 5’s Damage a “First Step”

kazunori-yamauchi-bw

While most of us are still getting over the shock of seeing a damaged car in Gran Turismo, many others criticized Polyphony Digital’s work for not showing over-the-top destruction found in other, often more “arcade” racing games. Apparently, Kazunori Yamauchi himself responded to critics in his latest French interview with GamesBlog.fr, but we missed it the first time around without a full English transcript.

His other comments are significant, claiming the Gran Turismo 5 demo shown at GamesCom “marks only the first step of what we want to achieve for damage.” He goes on to ask for feedback, stating that “we’re interested to know how far the players want to go.”

Those who have defended GT5’s previewed damage model have cited the extremely high level of detail found in other areas of the game – which consume development time and technical resources inside the PS3 – as an explanation for the less sensational crashes.  In other words, if you were hoping for “more”, you would be wise to put your own expectations in check.  Gran Turismo 5 is obviously a game which will receive many downloadable updates during its lifetime, and Yamauchi is probably referring to refinement of the damage model over the long term. We’ll just have to see how – and if – the damage model has changed the next time GT5 is shown in action.

I’ve driven a “Le Mans 24 hour” game at 100%, ie the Race was a full 24 hours in real time. The game had changing weather conditions and fuel stops. Your cars handling altered as your fuel load lightened and your tyres wore out. The only way you could “save” your progress was when pitting, to change tyres and / or re-fuel. Lighting conditions changed from daylight to sunset to dusk to night to sunrise & back to daylight. The entire game was brilliant apart from one thing, no car damage. So I could (if I wanted to) “lean” on other vehicles to make progress. If there was the possibility of completely totalling my motor after 23.5 hours, it would have an added excitement and tension. Your skill level would also need to be far higher, in order to avoid contact with barriers, cars, etc.

berlino weather and damage dont have to be in the final gt5 game for me….. jus saying these are bonus features…… granturismo will sell regardless…. my only concern is the issue revolving the cockpit views…. you need cockpit views for the majority of cars…. i know some wouldnt have because of concept types etc. at least from 1990 models should and younger should have, the rest might consider be vintage and might pose a problem getting cockpit views for them… i dont expect to see a cockpit view for a 1981 toyota corolla…. if it is there that would wow me.

  3. caribbeantopdriver

    @ berlino

there are semi dry/wet tyres you might choose, pending on the before race forcast showing a slight chance of rain….. follow me? its either use dry tyres which are ideal for dry conditions but if rain you are screwed, or, use semi that you still have some level of grip on both wet and dry tracks. keeps you thinking it would ya know.

  4. Berlino Bear

    @ caribbeantopdriver

I dont mean to diss. Sorry. I can see how it might add to it if the weather changes durring the race. However its not a key fact that Im really looking for.

But I hope its in there for you.

  5. Berlino Bear

    @ caribbeantopdriver

I can’t say that is a situation I would ever fantasise about. Hey, each to their own I guess.

Why I would be running wet tires in a dry race thought?

  6. NA1NSXR

I will always consider damage to be a useless distraction for this game’s development and gameplay. In any realistic damage scenario your race is over or you lose an unrecoverable amount of time and/or pace. I would easily trade damage for expidited release or for more attention to other features. Damage is only desirable for those who do not enjoy the game on as many levels as true enthusiasts. At the end of the day a damaged car model and a slower car as the result of a crash is just cheeze.

  7. caribbeantopdriver

    @berlino

do you understand the level of concentration and fun by the way, if weather came into gt5? picture you are in second spot and you cant get first… suddenly the rain starts and the guy infront of you tires arent ideal for the unexpected weather…. but yours are… and you turn the last bend to see him facing you jus after he lost it trying to drive the same way as he was before the rain…. hey you won the race…. weather would make it more enjoyable… regardless if gt5 has it in or not it would be a great game. all we are saying is.. it would be a plus for the game also would be sumthing the competition dont have as well.

    @ Stradivis

On a nice sunny Sunday morning I love going for a blast around the many CORNERS down here in Devon. Its dry and fast… and therefore FUN.

I have just come back from a drive (that i had to do to get home) in the pissing rain and thick fog going 35mph. NOT FUN.

  9. Stradivis

    @ Berlino

Just sunny tracks? Maybe they could add just straights. It would be easier to get where you want to go.

Even Enduro (Atari 2600) had weather conditions.

  10. Praggia

    @Berlino

Sorri dudes it just really peeves me when the guys don’t realise how much time and effort goes into creating a game like this. And be realistic guys no matter how big GT grows with future DLC it is impossible to cater to everyones requests it really is. Think about it if PD did decide to cater for this where would it end? cos u know they will go great lengths to make everything as authentic as possible. That would just be insane……

  11. Praggia

    GT5 will be great
so why dont all of u dumbasses just give it a rest
Stop harping on about “damage this” and “damage that” or Didnt PD know this before GC etc etc???
Give me a freaking break.I would like to see any of you geeks do better.
GT has always been a kick ass game regardless of not having damage or dodgy engine sounds. But I still love it to bits.
Last nite I even flung the M3 CSL around the Nurburgring on GT4 on my PS3 and u know what? it still rocked.
So stop complaining!!!!! You’re passing judgement before the game has even been released.
If I was Sony I would order a complete media blackout on GT5 until it was released.
That would shut all the crits up….for a while at least.

…….and I can bet every lame ass loudmouth crit on here will have a copy of GT5 when its released.

  12. Berlino Bear

What’s the obsession with the game having weather conditions? In the real world, driving in anything other than dry clear weather is just a pain in the bum. Its hard to see, you have to slow down and you just want to get where you are going. Why should it be any different in a game.

Just Sunny dry tracks please…. Thanks.

And don’t get me started on working indicators and reversing lights…. What’s fun about road safety? Nothing I tell you.

  13. snicker3s

    @Rhett Mash

Gt4 already had Nurb running on 32 MB on PS2.

Keeping in mind that we did not see final damage system(or final anything for that matter), what exactly did PD lie about concerning GT5?? (What did they promise and not deliver)?

  14. Rhett Mash

    @ David, John..

You guys are right. Kaz has always overpromised and underdelivered and us fanboys have been wagging our tails to his beats. As a matter of fact, with this round of GamesCon announcements and info, I’m convinced he’s back to his old ways. I find his GT spirit answer for the question on the competition being ignorant. Had he even seen what Grid, Forza and NFS are doing for damage, he would have an idea. I’m convinced that PD didn’t expect the competition to catch up and now they are desperately spinning their web of lies. Why can’t they come out and say, you know what, we were more busy working on the PSP version because it took us forever to figure out how to load and fit Nurburgring in the memory. Instead it’s the same BS about “It’s ready to be released anytime”, “Shortly after PSP version”, “Oh BTW, we were just seeing if you guys were okay with this damage and wanted more..”.

Liars!!! It’s pretty clear. This is the respect we get from PD for being fans.

The more I read about these, the more it aggravates me. And you know what, the Forza fans get such royal treatment from their webmaster Che. The Forza guys have a team conversing regularly with the fans. I’ve been spending much more time lately and just feel so bad about how PD treats us. What more, that games features are amazing. I’m not talking about damage. I’m talking about number of upgrades available, tuning options and customization. And you know what, all of their features are available on all 400 of their cars, whether it’s damage, cockpits. But I did find it weird that customization is not available on race cars that already have custom race decals. Anyways, at least they are upfront about it and tell the community what to expect and deliver on those.

I’m sorry but I can see this trend. A lot of us fans are seeing through Kaz’s lies. It’s only a matter of time. He better deliver on GT5 or he stands to lose quite a bit. Many of us are flirting with other racing games.

  15. Grant

Hopefully weather in gt5 i know its dificult to do but its posible for wrc rally tracks bescause of the limeted cars they can do snow fog and rain

  16. Pedz

I wish to see cars rolling over and denting/ paint scruffing (something i didnt see on the demo). Because if a car gets hit its going to damage the paintwork. Also rubber on the track would be a nice touch but not 100% nessicary.

  17. ICANT55

    PD=PHARMACY + OVERDOSE!!! of DLC=(CARS/TRACKS etc…) to my PS3= PRICELESS!!!! :-)

320gb(Internal) ps3 here with 160gb external hardrive waiting on GT5!!!

  18. Blues

I would much appreciate weather cycles and dynamic conditions.

When rumors were started to pick up about GT5 i remember the real time weather report being one of them. GT5P has the tid bit on the home screen about weather in certain areas… it was my understand that in the final build the weather of the location would determine the weather you raced in. That would be really cool to me, being forced to race in the rain for part of a series, not just because its the rainy track.

If Kaz is sincere about asking how far players want to go with the damage, then I want to be clear. A 60mph wreck should really smash up a car, we’ve all seen some accident on the freeway, and usually thats just a bumper to bumper deal. If you slam into a wall coming ’round a corner at 60.. there should really be a consequence. Then players would have to either learn to control the car or slow down.. thats how it should be. I wouldn’t mind if it was optional.

  19. ICANT55

HEY PD GO OLD SCHOOL !!! AND BRING BACK POINT TO POINT RACING !!!,Or something like the first 3 TOKYO HWY EXTREME GAMES where you can cruise around and battle people online with there stock/tuned cars,I know that sounds retro but before GT those where the pinnicales of racing games (T.H.E & the first NFS),And that seems to be missing now(At least to me). Choosing your weapon and going into battle”With a unknown factor there”thats why damage, weather & pit strategy(oh can’t forget interiors lol, right Canadianstig) is important TO A DEGREE!!!, Adding that would seperate the “REAL DRIVERS from the PEDAL PUSHERS”.Pd can take this game so far buy just just giving us cars……… past and present!,not mentioning New tracks, Stretches of Hwy (like the “Autobahn” etc),All they need to do is give us a Good core Game and Overdose it with DLC!!!,I know that PD strives to be better, but its hard doing that when your already the BEST( AND YES I SAID THAT,LOOK IN THE GUINESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS!) EVEN if PD copies something that another game has,it will still look and play BETTER ON GT5!!!

  20. caribbeantopdriver

hey john i never said they are NOW gonna put in weather cycles…… ever tought it is already in?? jus not showcasting it right now??? maybe waiting for a right time??? hey… i maybe off with the weather cycle thing, but look at all the other games example, forza, we didnt hear alotta things about the game before E3 did we? everything was release about the game at E3, now you for one minute dont think ky and pd dont have sumthing other than what we know already to release at tokyo game show next month?? i trust whatever it is its gonna be unique and would be jaw droping, and could very well be more than one surprise. i would be looking for you come the 28th of september to say……. told ya!!

  21. John

Sorry meant to include this above, but also Canadian STIG… it makes less sense when you consider those who really don’t like damage could just turn it off.

  22. John

ralph89: yes, if they made the opposite mistake (too much damage or full damage that was hampered gameplay) then sure there would be groaning… your mistake is to think that people are unhappy becuase something was left out… it’s not. They are unhappy because something was done wrong, which is limited damage on limited cars. This is made more wrong by the fact that it was promised to us, then caveates (and heavy ones at that) were attached. Is too much damage also doing it wrong? Yes!

So stop with the silly flawed arguments… no one wants crappy damage that makes a game unplayable, but that is not the only alternative to no or very little damage.

AJ: when you say “Come’on you have to respect how much time KY has spent on this game since the release of GT4.” you hit exaclty the problem… how do you respect the time someone put in when that time is VERY long and the results are partial or mediocre on some important fronts?

While other games are making good steps forward in gameplay AND graphics… PD seems to have spent a LOT of time and turned out much less. I would think PD needs to respect the time it’s fans have waited, living off promises of all kinds of awesome stuff that will be worth the wait, won’t be relased until it’s perfect etc etc…

The Masfer: So how do Kaz’s feet taste? I think you got something brown on your nose too ;P

Caribbean: I think you don’t understand how hard it is to add stuff to a game… testing any change easily takes weeks or months, you don’t go making major changes months before release. I really wonder what all those who are sure PD is holding back some huge awesome surprise will say if what we saw in the last video is more or less what you get and there are no big surprises? All this talk of how sure great big news is to come sounds an awful lot like denial…

Spec R: That might stop people from INTENTIONALLY (and I repeat might!) raming into each other, but it won’t fix the problem of crashing into cars and walls (which should greatly handicap you) having no long term effect on the race. So while someone who gets into a wall might have to cough up some $$$ at the end of the race, their car still performs for the race meaning they have an unfair chance at winning when they should really be screwed or at least have a very hard time placing.

Canadian STIG: Anythings possible, but I have to say that is some pretty strong hopefullness you have going on there… First off Kaz doesn’t really have to look far to see that people have been asking for damage in GT for quite a while (actually I think GT2 had shock damage), and to see the responses to announcement that damage would be in GT5.

But even easier… he has but to look at the competition, see what they are doing and see how it’s receieved…

I am sorry but “waiting for a green light” really makes no sense to me and at best I can see it as a way to deny your dissapointment by writing it off as an intentional move.

  23. Canadian STIG

    @ Snaeper

YOU WOULD’VE BEEN A WEALTHY INDIVIDUAL IF PEOPLE WERE FOOLISH ENOUGH TO BET!!!

YES, I STILL and will ALWAYS want my interior views!!! But enough of that ( for now of course), I find Kazunori’s comment regarding damage as somewhat surprising. I, optimistically speaking, would assume that Kazunori is simply, get this, waiting for us to give him the “green light” for realistic damage. Yes i know, ludicrous right? “we’re interested to know how far the players want to go.” This is a sign of coarse of a lack of completion of coarse but at the same time Kaz. attempts to express concern regarding both perspectives pertaining to damage Preserving beauty while rekindling that fondness most of us have for curiosity or the “what if this happens if I do this” would be a general statement. The fact that Kaz is reaching towards the audience for inspiration, or basic ideas, shows the will power this man and his team at P.D have for satisfying the masses while maintaing that same feel GT has managed to stand by. To even hear that further progress will be done to improve damage is also very thoughtful (most likely necessary as well) of Kaz to do so through DLC. I appoligize for my rambling even it does seem nonsensical in most aspects but I appreciate the time and meticulous effort that is going towards this one game. This isn’t just a game its a revolution of how we see simulation racing as a whole. I still however will always prefer my, well you know…

  24. Snaeper

    Spec R: Wonderful idea!

Give online mode to people who have always wanted it, then add in something that will make them never want to play it. Honestly, think about all the lil’ F-ers with all the money they’ll ever need on there going on and running into everyone because they can afford the repairs?

Besides, THIS IS A GAME. If I want to buy a car and pay for it when I break it, I’ll go into real life and race.. and I’ll encourage you all to do that same.

I’m really sorry Kaz decided to add damage.

  25. Stradivis

I’m very fond of damage in racing games, don’t get me wrong, but I believe there are priorities.

I don’t care if all games have damage, because only GT has the feeling of the thing, while the other racing titles don’t.

Also, if you don’t like how KY handles his games, go play another title. I see lots of people flaming him, but no one says Forza or NFS is better. No one dares to take into account how much effort and work was put in the GT series. No one admits how this series revolutioned the racing sim genre. It’s all flaming. It’s never enough.

That’s why we are not game designers. Think about it.

  26. Spec R

How do we stop people from cheating/crashing into others in GT5?

Make players pay for repairs (x2) in online races :P

  27. code13

damage or not, where have you had your best racing experience on any gaming platform?

For me it was Gran Turismo 5p online without damage (obvious) still it’s alot better game than any other racing game out there with damage, like Grid, Forza2, NFS ps, Ferrari Ch. I would take the full game GT5 without any damage/deformation over any other game out there. My point is, damage doesnt matter much.

on topic: I think it’s a great idea to upgrade damage system as the game grows older and then implement it in GT6. PD is doing a great job imo.

  28. ICANT55

Hey pd while your working on the damage can you brush up on the smoke a lil and patch in some burn out marks… ;-) and hold the pickles lol

  29. marchy

I just hope damage in GT5 can be turned-off. I am not a big fan of over-the-top car damage in video game. Reason being if you have raced REAL cars you would know damages like the ones in GRID or NFS would put you out of a race, either by terminal failure or a black-flag.

  30. caribbean topdriver

i suspect polyphony digital has sumthing big about the game under their sleeves, i believe they arent gonna release it until tgs or after forza 3 release, cause if they do forza could very well put it into their forza, i suspect weather cycles. there will be surprises at tgs next month and sumthing big about the game will wow us. i suspect weather. ive been watching the clouds on the trailer.

  31. cuarache_GTR

All of this changing weather and time of day talk is really getting me excited im just dreaming right now of doing SSR11 on a foggy wet day in a slightly over powered toyota supra RZ or TVR Griffith………….Dammmnn!!!

  32. aleksandar SRB

I foud this on playstation lifestyle “While speaking with a source close to Sony, we have received word that Sony is not only prepping Gran Turismo 5 for the holiday season, but it will be bundled with a 250GB PS3 slim for the price of $399. Along with Gran Turismo 5 and the 250GB PS3, we’ve been told to expect a voucher to some type of downloadable game, to help introduce new PS3 owners to the PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Network. Though as to which downloadable game is to be included is still up in the air.” For full story go to http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2009/08/25/sony-to-own-the-holidays-with-rumored-ps3-slim-bundle/

  33. AJ

what i dont understand is why all of the complaining.

First it was when are we going to get this game.

    Now its about the damage.

Come’on you have to respect how much time KY has spent on this game since the release of GT4. We are getting it soon and people complaining about the damage. For all i care the game would be bad ass without damage. Damage is giving us a more realistic way toward the game. No one was complaing 10-15 years ago when GT was introduced. And now its a hallmark on all racing games.

Not to get off topic, people the game most likely will have updates to help upgrade the damage one KY sees how it goes. Now idk if the damage we saw was final but expectations of this game is the same as it always been.

So people stop worring and just wait. We’ve been patient for a long time….just relax.

  34. irishash85

“In other words, if you were hoping for “more”, you would be wise to put your own expectations in check.”

this statement is BS. i fully expect to see a highly acclaimed game like this to at LEAST meet the standards of the genre, if not surpass them, and the current damage build that we’ve seen is well below the standard. it’s the devs own fault for titling it a driving simulator and saying they won’t do damage until it’s perfect. well, it’s far from perfect, what’s the excuse now?

and for the people who think damage is not important and say something like “this is a racing game, play Burnout Paradise if you want to crash” let me put it this way… if i’m going to win a race, it should be because of my skill right? so why should someone who makes mistake after mistake still have an equal chance at 1st place? it’s not fair at all. and the current time penalties are terrible. i get penalized for someone else slamming into me at the apex of the corner?

and to this quote “I bet when they release a full on damage on GT5 that can total your car, everyone will make another complain “The damage is too realistic!” the thing about including damage is both parties are happy, as you can toggle damage on or off, with no damage at all, only half the audience of the game is satisfied.

again, this would be a different issue if the game were just another need for speed arcadeish clone, but it’s supposed to be a simulator as titled by the people who produce it.

  35. NGrignon

@Ralph when you promise something, that you tease about it for so long, that you speak about it…. YOU MUST DELIVER. It’s as simple as that. The fact is that Kaz probably never wanted damages (completely against the arcadish way of GT gameplay content – here I don’t mean the advanced car physics but more the way the “simulation mode” is done), and it’s just the fan base pressure that changed his mind. So this damage system was probably coded very far in the development and it’s in its infancy today… In the meantime, Sony bosses knocked aggressively on PD’s doors for a release ASAP because they can’t stand the last 5 years without their golden egg’s game to boost up their console and get back in the race with Nintendo and Microsoft.

  36. ralph89

Keep moaning kids, I bet when they release a full on damage on GT5 that can total your car, everyone will make another complain “The damage is too realistic!, I can’t properly play it!, or I’m frustrated crashing my car!”, people will never stop making complain even “if” PD make the best racing game in the entire universe. Because…1. Fanoys 2. Haters 3. Competition 4. Chuck Norris(not). But yeah, no one will stop complain until they got their mouth duck taped for a long time.

Can everyone just chill the F”””” up it’s just a “game”, even if it’s a great one for car enthusiast it’s still a “game”. Want your wish for crashing? Rent a Ariel Atom and drive it straight through concrete wall at 100 mph and you’ll get what you wish for. End of the story.

  37. NGrignon

@oppilocki: “GRID being realistic?! come on that is a joke.”

Who said it was??? nonetheless, the best feature of GRID is its really polished Damage modeling with the possibility to total the car completely. I usually despite Codemasters productions but in the damage department, they are really great: particules, realistic deformations, flying pieces, damages that really have impact on your driving (much better in the Toca series by the way)… After 5 years, it’s what we really waited for from PD, not just cosmetic very light damages just to please the “holly” car manufacturers which is funny because in the Codemasters productions (as other when you can ruin the car) all the cars are also from the same manufacturers….

  38. pegaz2507

this is going to be an awesome game im sure.i would really like some weather changes and day and night too.great work so far for polyphony.i am realy exited about this game-cant wait for tgs and a realease date it is sooo far away

  39. Hernan

What i see is what il get, i dont believe a single word of this guy mouth. Im still waiting for GT4 online addon or the damage patch for GT5p.

  40. John

Yup cop out… I guess we didn’t have to wait till TGS anyway…

David says it right, when PD promises, GT fans bounce off the walls, when PD then says they didn’t accomplish what they promised, GT fans make excuses for why it’s not important (these are generalizations, not 100% obviously).

How far do fans want to go? I would think if you just look around at what others are doing, see what people like and want there, you have a pretty good metric…

As for GT being great without damage so will be great without damage in the future… some cars were top safety rated without airbags back in the 80s… then airbags became standard… you wouldn’t say that since it was top safety rated in the 80’s without airbags and now its got better seatbelts (but still no airbags – ) it’s still top safety rated right?

The point is that while GT was great without damage, that was when very few games had damage so it was the status quo. With every generation GT ignored damage, it just fell farther and farther behind the curve. So the aguement that just because it was ok before and it’s a little better now it’s still ok doesn’t fly if it’s not keeping up with the norm.

  41. ICANT55

“BEN ” i was thinking the same thing &” M5 DUDE ” All they have to do is Add ALOT of new cars on a disc that the ps4 will only play. Then we all will buy it lmao! DAMN i shouldnt have said that Sony and pd thats trademarked ;-)

  42. Confi-User-3

I’m getting really sick of those damage conversation.
Turboteam says: “Without damage, this game can’t Carry the name of The real driving sim…”
Well, all other GTs also had no damage and they were Real Driving Simulators in my opinion. You can’t get anything right at one time, that’s impossible. You can have real physics, many cars, tracks, maybe a good AI, maybe weather and day/night changes, but maybe you can’t have a real damage model because they take out all of these things and less in that. And I think there will be DLCs for that and if Kazunori does it like in GT5P it will be free. Sure, it’s unfair for the people who don’t have access to Internet, but today pratically everyone has wireless, so not a great problem at all.
Only to say, GT5 will be “the real driving simulator”, with or without perfect damage. There are other things who are more important to the game than that ominous damage.

  43. GTracerRens

It would be great to race on the stages by night. But I prefer a weather change system. It was “confirmed”, but as we could see at GamesCom, we can’t say it’s in GT5 or later by DLC.

  44. Turboteam

Without damage, this game can’t Carry the name of The real driving sim…

I’m getting behind my wheel again in Gtr Evolution, The REAL driving sim…. Whake me up when tamagochi is ready…

  45. Stipe

…and one more thing. I don’t want unfinished GT game (main game). I would like updates like cars, stacks, maybe parts and similar, but to change core or game few times, I think it is not good idea. I will rather wait longer for FINISHED GAME.

  46. Stipe

OK, I read so many comments that I feel need put my expression here.
    First of all; MIGHTY DAMAGE.
I’m absolutely for it if it will be done properly, by that I mean top notch even if it is at limited number of cars (actualy I don’t like that, but we all must be satisfied with that because already known reasons from long before). By that I mean on damage wen you hit concrete wall (or whatever) at 200+ km/h you destroy car (totaly) and that damage have affect on performance , that you can burn engine, have broken gearbox, tire puncture and so on and that all of that can happen on AI cars. By that I come to second point; AI
We all know that beside damage (which by me is not), AI was/is weakest (I agree with that) part of GT series. I hate fact that on GT (and some others game too) I’m the only idiot who making mistakes. I love the fact that when I have good and clean race I can win, but also can make stupid mistake on last corner on very last lap. And want so see that AI have ‘soul’ like in some games (there is no perfection in this are nor it ever will) and can also commit mistake, have broken engine and have variety of ‘characters’. By that mean that there should be more unit with specific characteristic; some mistaking more, some driving more precise, some brake under pressure, … and on like on unit connected to ‘matrix’ and all units on tracks are like one person driving different cars. I think that that will be enough for now till I’m not to start overreacting. But at least I expect something better from AI in future game.
    Another point; WEATHER AND TIME
I really hope that this will be included in GT5. This will give a massive step forward in series, I will dare to say even more that first two. Imagine 60 (or more) tracks with this feature. Totaly new dimension (rainy race on Laguna Seca in 17.00h).
And that all of that can be adjusted or have few modes (like; amateur, semi, and professional or something like that to be suitabe from casual consumers to hard-core players).
And few words in the end related on cars and tracks.
Numbers which cruising around here is more than enough for me. But I hope that will be models and not countless variations of some models. Yeah, I like to have every version of Skyline or Mustang or whatever but just one or two from each, just one whose are the best and most characteristic (instead 15 R34s just for example R34 Nur II and GT-R R34).
And Will also like to see some costum build cars and some exotics.
I hope that Tuners parts will be included (interiors and exteriors), atleast exteriors for most popular ones among tuners or atleast body kit in few variations (2-3 tuner and 1-2 racing).
Just to have more personalized cars, and costum colors and stickers and others accessories for it. Number of tracks is very good, but I hope that some of those legendary tracks will made it GT5 like; Spa, Monza, Silverstone, Road America, Bathurst, Watkins Glen, …

I know that I may sound greedy (about tracks and specialy cars) but in the end I will buy GT5, no doubt. I have every release and they (PD) never dissapointed me. It is true that GT games not had something I hoped for but in the end GT was and still is my favorite game.
I’m a GT fanboy but not at this point that i will talk bad about Forza (which I would also like to play) or any other game. It is better to say that I’m in first line fan on Automobiles and Motorsports then of racing games and Gran Turismo by my favorite racing game.

  47. oppylocky

GRID being realistic?! come on that is a joke. Never have cars oversteered so badly. The only thing that i really liked about that game was the car models and interior modelling and the day and night aspect of the game.

The way that I see GT is that with the best car modelling in the business, all that takes PS3 manpower and if people want intensely realistic vehicular damage then they will have to accept that other areas of the game will suffer. Me personally? I choose to have the best of car/envioronmental models rather that have damage. I wholly expect that in due time the guys at PD will upgrade the crash damage levels via DLC. My main concern is that will ther be 24 hour weather because if they can do that then that would be just mental.

  48. m5_dude

“Who agrees with me that GT5 should be developed AFTER its release. I would honestly like it if there was no GT6 and they just added to GT5. Little by little, it would become as good as GT6.”

How are they going to make us buy the PS4 then? :P

  49. Peewee737

Lets say you bend your steering a bit in turn one. How many online racers will stil continue an already lost race… Most will exit the race and start over. Decent communities, that’s the answer…..

  50. Ben

Who agrees with me that GT5 should be developed AFTER its release. I would honestly like it if there was no GT6 and they just added to GT5. Little by little, it would become as good as GT6.

  51. T_D_Kerabatsos

Visual damage, even of a primitive sort, will be a welcomed addition to the GT series. If the future brings downloadable content to enhance the visuals, all the better. I agree with those that want performance damage. If one is unable to control their car properly because they keep hitting the wall or other racers, then they should learn to avoid doing that quickly enough. What I would like to see is a body shop. So that when you damage your car you have to spend credits to repair the damage before you can race again. If you total your car guess what? You have to buy it, and all your performance parts all over again.

  52. Gaz

I agree with David, KY promises alot stuff and then fucks it up, for example ages ago when prologue was released, we were told there was going to be Motorbikes, they even used to have a Ford GT and a Motorbike on the Gt homepage, what happened to that?
But still prologue’s great and I think the actual game is going to be even better.

  53. The Masfer

Kaz is trying to release it before Christmas but he wants as much done as possible so there is less downloadable content.

When the downloadable content comes out it will probably be all free anyway because kaz wants the best driving game for all

    p.s. Kas is best

  54. aleksandar SRB

I would like to race with my Mclaren F1 LM vs ferrari F50, enzo, diablo, bugati, viper acr and corvette zr1 on grand valley speedway wet and foggy track!!!!

  55. Basher59

I’d like to see damage on all vehicles, but some of the car manufacturers get a bit precious about their models so Polyphony Digital cannot do it, even if they wanted to.

If you drive recklessly in real life you can get killed or injured whilst totalling your motor. If you’re driving like an idiot against a mate or online, there should always be the possibility that you could trash your ride & be black flagged or unable to continue. That way you’ll get a buzz from being fast but finishing intact. Perhaps a “good sportsmanship” prize could be awarded / added to GT5 online, to those who don’t make contact with any other vehicle, etc.

The Barging cheatin’ shortcut online idiots should be awarded Penalties as per GT5 Prologue.

  56. gooner sems

i really hope the dlc’s for free i hate it when i buy a game then i have to pay even more money to make it a f ull game hope kaz and pd adress that issue because from what i can tell the dlc will come big and will come a lot as for me i don’t really care about damage night racing or anything else i want a granturismo game a full one on the ps3 anything else a massive bonus

  57. ICANT55

    LMAO @ SNAEPER !!!

KY you can work on the damage and patch it , Just give me more BAD ASS cars with some serious tuning,New tracks with weather changes and day to night(or night to day) with pit crews…AND IM GOOD…cant forget interiors LMAO! for some reason i cant stop thinking about day dreaming about a r8,gtr & gallardo on the nurburgring @ night in foggy wet weather,Or a 8-12 cars drifting on a japanese mountain road that shit would be sick!

  58. Context

All i ask is, if part of the car is barley hanging on for example the front bumper in the videos, i want it to come off it receives more damage. I think the visual damage is enough for me just maybe a little bit more body damage, deformation of the actual structure would be nice, but if you can’t produce that, it’s fine. What i am begging for is, performance damage, super realistic performance damage that affects things like caster, camber, toe, and everything else imaginable. That would make Gran Turismo 5 the ultimate game in my opinion.

  59. Bolg

    @ David

Your right, if this wasn’t GT we would be moaning because it would be just another racing game where all the cars feel the same. Nothing can get close to GT in terms of how realistic the cars feel so if you can’t appreciate this then you might as well just spend your money on crapy arcade style games like Grid or Forza and stop moaning like a spoilt little girl.

  60. overdriver

With these new KY statements, the scary idea of best modeled damage coming through downloadable content, and seeing cars of those who don’t “buy damage” not wrecking at all, and others wrecking realistically… LOL’d.

  61. snicker3s

    @Alex p

Gt3 indeed did not deliver these sidedishes and was by far ‘best’ racing game ever at the time.
By ‘best’ I mean reception and sales.
    IGN: 9.8/10, Gamespot :9.4/10,…

Arent we all focusing too much on the extra feature list?? Has PD ever let us down?? (aside from the waiting times). Lets all wait for the real game, give it a couple of thousands of playing hours, and then everyone can be as disappointed as they care to be.

  62. TimButDim

I love the moody Kaz pic, it seems even his portrait photographer is asking when GT5 is coming out!!

    ;P

  63. Bogie 19th

“like the Forza damage idea even though it’s not even close to realistic.”

    These people crack me up.

  64. Alex p.

@ Dude 27 and David, I SO much agree with you guys. Look. I’m a huge GT fan since day 1 and I’m very happy with what PD achieved so far, but when they promise they do the damage right or not at all, that imlies to me that the damage model will be even far beyond the one of Grid, and than I see (and play at GC) this. How can you not be dissapointed? People get serious, if they can not deliver, they shuold not promise, period.
As a sidenote: You know what Kaz promised back than for GT3? I’ll tell you: Weather changes, day time changes, cockpit view and damage, what did they deliver of these things?-nothing.

  65. Stradivis

Back in the Saturn days there was a game called Touring Car Championship. No visible damage, but damage reflected in the behavior of the car. Internal bleeding you may call it, and that was a concept that worked wonders IMO.

Now everyone is talking about damage, but I believe an improved AI is much more important, and should be a priority. GT4 was awesome in many aspects, but the AI sucked. It had no awareness of your presence on the track.

So, having damage and the same AI, it will translate into a massive frustration (as when you get penaltys in GT4 because tha AI hit you) during gameplay.

I rather see processing power used on the AI and physics engine.

Also, day and night cycle and dynamic weather are much more important than cosmetic damage.

Yes, I would like to see a full damage model, with beyond repair situations where you’d lose a car (like falling from a cliff in canyon or piles peak), but I believe there are priorities among all things we want from this great series.

  66. Berlino Bear

    @ Dude27..

I think you are mixed up there. You are talking about a “Real Crashing Simulator”.

If damage was 100% it would cost you £250,000 to replace the car you totalled. That’s why you wouldn’t be taking as many risks with your racing. Watch any touring car race, anything more than rubbing and the car is out of the Race. So if that was in GT, it wouldn’t be much would it. It would just piss you off.

I don’t mind if there is damage or not to be honest. As long is its consistent across all cars.

  67. SniperSight

Well as regards the damage, KY himself said they would only put damage in if they could get it right. Well then, in that case it would want to be alot better than the Gamescom showcase.
Also, was it not siad that GT5 could be launched at any time and they were just tweaking it.
He says that the demo is the first steps in what they want to achieve, so does that mean they havent achieved any damage better than Gamescom?? Is the feedback, so that we’ll complain about damage and they’ll release an update which you buy, for the privilege of something that should have been there all along.

This whole updates malarkey is similar to another game. Flight Simulator. Basically you buy the base product, realise all the stuff thats missing and then have to buy all the stuff that actually makes it realistic(Scenery, sound etc, etc.)

I love the GT series, but I wish there wasnt so much BS about what theyre “going” to do. They said theyd only do damage if it was realistic. Well now were hearing that if we want that then everything else would be affected. Bit late for excuses isnt it??!!!

  68. snicker3s

    @Matt

Clubman Stage Route 5, sweet memories:)

Hope nighttime racing will be in.

Now imagining cockpit view with brightly lit dashboard + streetlight shadows fastly moving by. Would be very sweet, for me personally sweeter than damage altogether

  69. Matt

I’d like damage on as many cars as possible. I’d prefer it if it were more realistic as the demo seems to have unrealistically light damage (if I compare it to crashes I’ve had in real life). It might be nice to have component failure too (as well as night races, changing weather, puddles and so on).

If realistic damage isn’t possible then I’d like a clear definition of the purpose of damage ie. It’s there to stop wall riding and ridiculous driving but the graphic representation is just to look nice.

Well, apparently he asked what I’d like, so…………

  70. Dude27

For me it’s pretty clear, if you want to have this punchline “The REAL DRIVING SIMULATOR” without lying you MUST HAVE accurate damages, period!

Damages provides the way to FEEL LIKE a pilot: You have to be sharp, accurate and focused to DRIVE knowing that an error could end your run. Damages makes drivers better, more realistic because you have not the overall feeling to be in DANGER so you have to be more cautious LIKE IN REALITY.

The biggest problems with damages in GT is not if it’s possible (we kmow it is with Codemasters productions) but can it be done in a realistic way IN GT? with its poor AI and its semi arcade GAMEPLAY (finish in the podium in too few laps).

  71. Matt

I am going to be EXTREMELY ANNOYED if there is no nighttime racing in this game. I love to imagine how amazing it would look to blaze full speed through a city or a countryside at night.
With gran turismos graphic engine and lighting, it would be spectacular. Im sure many people here besides me remember Clubman Stage Route 5 from the first game. Thats what I have in mind. With the way Gran Turismo 5’s lighting it, it would be HUGELY (AND I MEAN HUUUGELY) depressing to not have at least a few opportunites to enjoy beautiful night time racing in GT5.

I look forward to the full track list.

I should also note that I’m highly interested in Forza and NFS Shift for this same reason. Any modern racer with well rendered and diverse tracks is going to catch my eye and at least be given a try. No unneccessary fanboy bias from me.

A final note: With respect to physics I think Forza 2 set the bar. Apparently polyphony realized this and has done much to improve it. I need only mention how in previous games you have been able to ride the track apron without having any noticeable effect on performance. You couldnt do that in Forza, but even in GT5 prologue you can drive on the apron on Daytona and it feels pretty much the same as the track. So while Forza has some obvious things included that are intended to help the games popularity with folks who arent neccessarily racing enthusiasts (re-winding), for someone interested in the meat and bones of the race I think this newest iteration of GT is going to make a lot of people happy. And like others have already mentioned, if something needs tweaking then there are always downloadable updates. They did it with Prologue with the physics engine, so they can do it now.

Sorry for the longwindedness. I’m just very excited about the next few months.

  72. David

GT Fanboy delusion, constantly lowering your expectations just because PD can’t deliver. KY promises too much then half of it goes out the window and you all go “oh well I didnt really want it anyway”. Bottom line the damage sucked at Gamescom, it was damage that was seen in games like 5 years ago. All you fanboys need to take off your rose tinted glasses and see that if this wasnt your beloved GT and just another racing game you would be moaning about everything.

Thank god KY said that that was just early damage development although its still totally lame that only some cars are getting damage. He should shut his mouth and not say things like “we can release it any time we want” but then go everything your seeing is not finished! What a joke!

Oh and releasing an unfinished game and patching it over years is not a release, its a cop out. Im not going to wait another 3 years in patches to get the GT we should be getting in a few months.

  73. Brian

How about creating a poll in the GT5 section about the level of damage we want? or if there is one – sticky it! And let’s hope kaz finds his feedback!

  74. mink

god im so sick of this “first step” bs. honeslty they didnt this know since only the day before GC. they better show some really impressive stuff on TGS or maybe ill just uprgrade my pc again. Those devs dont just talk and actually take their cusomers seriosly…

  75. Bolg

I think the damage at Gamescom was fine I don’t see why so many people are crying about it, even if GT5 is just Prologue but with more tracks & more cars it will still be miles better than any other racing game.

  76. andej006

i think that gt5 should have damage on all of the cars because its been a long time since the prologe (almost 2 years) so what have they been doing since then ??

  77. sharif ali

too much stressed/focused on damage…& i dont see/hear any news about weather change features in GT5..correct me if im wrong

  78. wobster3

The game is looking good. As far as i am concerned i would like to see damage on rally cars becasue that is almost essential for rally games. It would be nice for damage to be put in all cars and to be realistic so a large impact would flip the car but realisticly i am not expecting this but hink this should maybe be an update later on. I am also hoping for day and night races aswell as changing weather, this would make endurance races sooo much better! The last thing i am hoping for is realistic car prices. But to be honest i cant wait for the game to come out however it is because for me the prospect of Gran Turismo 4 with the top gear track, in HD and with online events would IMO be worth £40 on its own! Lets see what happens in the future.

  79. Marky264

I knew it was in First Model Stages…. I’m hoping that they’ll be Gran Turismo 5 Pods at the Eurogamer Expo here in London in October. I’ll be filming the whole booth all day!

  80. Bank Alexander

    I agree with Juniordee.
    Don’t mind S_M_91

    @ S_M_91

How can you expect damage on ALL cars? Kaz actually told us it’s not going to be that way lol ^_^

I understand what you mean about unified physics (damage??), but that’ll just be like copy n’ pasting for Polyphony Digital, which they probably don’t like haha.

  81. Quency

Hi everybody, my first post on this damn good website,
beeing a french i’m simply gona translate you the Kazunori Yamauchi interview with GamesBlog :

    {Begenning blahbla “welcome to GamesCom” blah…}

GB : We waited so much for GT PSP…
KY : To be honest with you, i’ve learned a lot these past years, and the future is never like what you expected. That’s why now during my interviews I don’t want to mention the future. I like to say things with precision that’s why I only tell things when it’s really finished and ready.

GB : Is GT PSP hard to develop ?
KY : Working on the PSP version has been much more difficult than expected at the begining. Be able to put the whole Gran Turismo using only the 32mb of the PSP has been really tuff. We also would like to include a lot of game features concieved thinking of the portable use. These two objectives were really ambitious but today we can consider then as well done. Talking about perfection, I consider GT PSP as one of the 3 best GT games.

GB : Who had the idea of temporarly giving GT PSP free with the PSP Go ?
KY : Sony had this idea. They needed something really strong for the PSP Go launch date and we are really greatful to have been chosen for that.

GB : No news about GT5… Why ?
KY : I’m really pleased that so many people are interrested by GT5 and we are doing our best to release this game as soon as possible. But we have priorities, the one that GT PSP has to coming out on PSP the 1st October. The only thing I can tell you today is that GT5 would be coming soon after this (GT PSP).

GB : What about damages ?
KY : The game version that we brought to the GamesCom shows the first step of our work with the damages. You can now see a lot of damages on the car body but we were interested to know how far the players want to go. The damages already affect the control but it shouldn’t affect all vehicules in the final version.

GB : Forza 3, NFS Shift… How do you see the other games ?
KY : Under development, one of our priorities is to know each element we are integrating o the game deal really with the GT spirit. We are not trying to build a microwaves, that’s why it’s useless to search which is the game with the best content. We are really focused on the GT spirit, on the sensations that built the GT legend.

GB : After so many year focused on GT, aren’t you bored ?
KY : I’m never bored by GT, there’s still so many things that I want to do. But beside this I’m feeling more and more the wish to try a different game style.

    GB : Which style ? RPG ?
KY : Yes I have some ideas, but it’s top secret (laugh).

GB : Are you proud of the GT evolution ?
KY : I think I reached to realised my first thought. But of course, so many others have been in my mind these past few years. Today we are more focusing on existing objectives. One of the main thought I had at the begening was to do professional driving licences. Last year the GT Academy project has shown that it was possible to transcript the virtual experience to the real life. That was one of my main goals.

    END

Hope it can help you to understand this interview.

  82. Pixel

Snaeper Said: if it’s not done before it’s launched.

I’d say it’s not done even when launched thanks to PSN updates… Even if it’s not quite perfect at launch we will have a great game… and with the updates, it will come closer and closer to being perfect.

And as for the damage, of course full scale realism in damage simulation would be great. I’d love the game to be as realistic in this aspect as possible but not at the expense of anything that has made GT a great series.

    My 2 cents.

  83. Dom

I hope for realistic physics. The car should flip over, if the impact is big. (The GC Demo did not show that – check out the crashes where people turn against the flow and cause front-impact crashes). The visual damage is a bonus, but should follow realism if implemented. So if I have a slow crash, I want to see some damage. It’s not ok to crash with 50mph and drive away without major damage. In fact, the car should be destroyed. I want to have that option, at least in race cars. Crashing with higher speed and impact = end of race and heavy damage. Not just a swinging door…Other than that, I am very happy with the progress of GT5.
Especially the soft barriers and debris on track are nice. Maybe we can see rubber on track as well.

  84. RAugie

Damage on all cars would be nice, but whatever they can handle in the future of designing, would be what I want in the game.

Also, i agree with GTracerrens and i like the free patches option so that they can release the game sooner, but introduce new cars and damage to prevous ones as we play the game

  85. GTracerRens

Yes, I did already expect this. And as long as the updates are free or when we in Europe get Pre-paid PSN cards, I will be happy with the result they bring. ;)

  86. henban

First of all i think it is a good thing that we now will experience damage on cars in GT5, allthough i wouldnt say it was something i really missed on previous releases. I certainly hope that the damage will be able to affect all the cars in the game – what happens if you drive a race model in a race with standard models and vice versa if damage only works on the race cars for instance? Moreover i hope that the damage also will give you economical setbacks – you pay money so the car gets fixed after the race. Another thing i hope is that the damage doesnt affect your driving extremely much, since if you driving with a normal hand unit i suppose it will very difficult to steer if the steering is damaged compared to if you are using a logitech unit.

Anyone who knows anything and can confirm or deny my hopes?

  87. Warden

I want flames coming out of the engine, tires ripping off, cars doing multiple flips/rolls, so that if you total a car it’s a write off and you’ll have to buy or use another one.

  88. mog

    @ kekke2000

I agree, Polyphony need to get a decent crash physics model right first before worrying about actual vehicle deformation. This will make for a better online racing experience and would be better use of there time.

  89. Snaeper

Who wants to make a bet that Canadian STIG somehow brings up interior views in this comment section?

Overall, I’m glad to see Kaz cares, and that there will be updates.. if it’s not done before it’s launched.

  90. Daniel

People should not be complining, Gran Turismo was kick ass before they implemented damage, so anything we do get is a bonus over what will already be a brilliant game.

And like written in the article if you want super high quality crashes where bits fling all over the place and wheels hanging off here and there, then you will have to expect serious cutbacks in other areas of gameplay to compensate, this was one of the first things i worried about ever since damage was rumoured. So to be honest im quite happy what they have done so far.

Also if your a awesome driver, damage shouldnt come into play too often for yourself…..

  91. S_M_91

    Juniordee Says:

    August 25th, 2009 at 4:22 am
I’m expecting non-production cars to have damage. And I’d be happy with that.

Yeah, you only say that because that’s pretty much what is known right now. I expect damage on ALL cars, because unified physics model does not care what make a car is, or if it has decals or not…

  92. commedieu

^^^ there is no such thing as damage stopping cheating. Have you played any racer online with damage? Morons will be morons. Morons will use you to turn, like in forza. Morons will nudge you off of the track like in LFS.

Its up to the circle of drivers & the community. I’ve had races with many GTP members where you wouldn’t have known damage was/wasn’t in the game. Because the focus isn’t on letting a game teach you driving skills by how badly you can’t control a vehicle.

The notion that damage prevents hijinks in online gaming is like punkbuster stopping spawn camping or something thats just part of the culture of online gaming.

People cut the track ALLLLL the time, and most of those idiots can’t even keep up the time they cheated. I mean its pretty much isolated incidents with morons online that ruin gaming, but thats why communities like this are around so you know you’re racing with someone that might not take you in that corner because it wont be clean, or will leave you in the dirt, but would rather own your ass with a nice clean pass. I mean thats what its kind of about, and its what GT has always been about. Replays look stupid when you wreck, and they look stupid when you do it to win.

  93. Tattoo Stan

Damage should only be there to stop cheating. I can do without spectacular crashes if the racing is good and the physics are good.

Buy Grid if you want exploding engines and shattered windscreens.

  94. kekke2000

This will make it hard for the reviewers because the game released 2009 might not be the same game as it’s going to be 2011. While FM3’s spokesman is screaming out that they’ve done the best racing game with most cars (cars? really?) and tracks bla bla bla… Kaz don’t say anything. He almost never speaks of anything that hasn’t already been shown. About the damage… I like the Forza damage idea even though it’s not even close to realistic. It basically gives you a feeling while playing that you should keep the car in good shape. Although that could be done with good crash physics instead. So more energy on improving crash physics on GT than the crash modelling. I think it’s the next step and I’m sure whatever happens, GT5 will be the best game yet for PS3.

  95. yeti

Intriguing – I wonder if what he means is that the damage model is fully written for all the cars – but he has to decide which ones (can) have it turned on…
