Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Balancing Act

Update (18/07): The format for Race C has changed from 12 laps to six laps, and we’ve amended the article to reflect this.

A new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races is now available, giving players three new multiplayer challenges for the next seven days — with two that allow players some more freedom by way of the rarely used “partial” settings feature.

Race A is the odd-one out in that regard, consisting of a regular one-make race with everything locked down. That includes your Driver Rating and Sportsmanship Rating which, once again, won’t be affected by anything that happens during the race as it’s a “no DR/SR Updates” event.

It takes place at the regularly used Autodrome Lago Maggiore venue, this week using the compact West End layout — not to be confused with the West circuit. This track has its own pit lane, right by the split for the final sector of the full circuit, and features a unique cut-through that feeds you onto the approach to the bowl hairpin.

You’ll need a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III GSR ’95 — though you can also use the car rental feature to borrow one — equipped with Comfort Soft tires for the six-lap sprint race. The unfamiliar layout may lead to some interesting driving standards, so watch out for chaos around that cutting section.

Also keep an eye on the start. It’s a grid start with the False Start Check enabled, so you’ll need to hold the car on the brakes or handbrake when all of the lights come on and until they go off. If you creep at all or jump the start, you’ll face an engine power cut and probably get hit by everyone behind you on this compact grid.

It’s mostly normal fare in Race B, which places you into your choice of Gr.3 car for a four-lap blast around the Dragon Trail Seaside circuit on Racing Medium tires. However that’s not the whole story…

Firstly, you’ll be racing at the Reverse layout of the track, which brings its own challenges. The infamous “Chicane of Death” is not quite so fatal on this layout, but the sharp left onto the uphill (now downhill) fast S-bends is a corner with no good lines — and plenty of incidents as everyone tries very different approaches.

You’ll also have the freedom to adjust brake balance in this race. In order to have access to this setting you’ll need to buttons mapped for your multifunction display (MFD) to select the various aspects and turn them up or down — or forward and backward in the case of the Brake Balance Controller.

That also applies to Race C, which is an event for the fastest conventional cars in the game: the Gr.1 category of prototypes. All Gr.1 cars, including the classic Group C racers right up to the fictional Vision GT cars adapted for the category, are eligible for this six-lap race around of the 24 Heures du Mans circuit.

You’ll need to be aware of tire wear concerns and mandatory tires. There’s a 6x multiplier this week, which means that your tires will wear six times faster than usual. Additionally, there’s no hard compound available, with only Racing Medium and Racing Soft on offer.

To go alongside that, both tire grades are mandatory use. That means you’ll need to use each set for at least one pass of the start/finish on track — so no sneaky pitting before you reach the start, and no pitting at the end of the last lap — or you’ll face a one-minute penalty on top of your race time.

Essentially you’ll need to extract as much life from the Soft tire as you can without wearing it so much that the Medium is faster. The ability to adjust brake balance will help you out a lot here, as rear-ward balance will reduce front tire wear — and the hybrid cars’ battery regeneration.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday July 24.
