The latest set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races is now available, bringing back a fan-favorite event that’s almost the racing equivalent of a coin toss at 250mph.
GT7’s Daily Races are the core ranked multiplayer events, allowing players to race in a set of three different events every 20 minutes (or 30, for Race C) for Driver Rating and Sportsmanship Rating points that help set their position for matchmaking in the flagship esports series.
In part that usually doesn’t apply to Race A, which normally doesn’t feature Driver Rating (DR) updates. However this week that’s extended to Sportsmanship Rating (SR) too as we see the return of the Special Stage Route X “meme race”.
Taking place over a single lap of the absurdly long oval — 18.85 miles — the race features a selection of 16 specifically tuned, high-performance cars. These include highly tuned Japanese performance legends like the Mk4 Supra and three generations of Skyline GT-R, American sports cars like the Corvette ZR1 and Viper, and some European supercars that, notably, includes a detuned Chiron.
As the cars are pre-tuned you can only select from the specified vehicles, but there is one special factor of which you’ll need to be aware for the race: nitrous. Each of the cars is equipped with a nitrous tank for the race (not in practice or qualifying) and you’ll need to pick the right moments to deploy this extra burst of speed.
There’s more normal fare in Races B and C, which feature the two main esports categories of Gr.3 and Gr.4 race cars. This week it’s actually the Gr.3 vehicles in the shorter, sprint race which takes place at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s “No Chicane” layout.
This version of the track skips out the final RACC Chicane, allowing for a higher-speed run onto the main straight — particularly in these higher-downforce Gr.3 cars. You’ll need Racing Medium tires fitted for the five-lap race.
That leaves the Gr.4 cars for Race C, this week heading to the Short Course version of Watkins Glen for a 15-lap blast. You’ll need to be aware of the diversion, with the course cutting out the entire Boot section as the Outer Loop continues to the right straight into turn nine, but otherwise the course should be familiar.
For this week’s race there’s also a return of the mandatory pit stop. You’ll need to take to the pit lane at least once during the race — and watch out as the pit entry is awkward and you may exceed the limits for a three-second penalty or come into conflict with cars that are not pitting — or you’ll take a one-minute penalty to your race time after the race.
Note that you don’t need to actually pick up more fuel or fresh tires during your stop, just head down the pit road. Indeed new tires may be counter-productive, as you’ll be using Racing Hard rubber and the 2x tire wear multiplier will barely produce any wear over the course of the race.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
