Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Three’s a Crowd

After a week with some high-performance road machines, the newest set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races return to an all-race car line-up, and there’s a bit of mischief going on in the regulations.

Race A is the usual short, sprint race this week, with Driver Rating (DR) updates turned off. That means you won’t gain or lose any DR from this race, no matter what your result, but Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates remain turned on, so there is still a danger of losing SR if you get caught up in a particularly dirty race.

On the face of it the format looks pretty simple, comprising a five-lap race for Gr.4 cars at Laguna Seca. It’s not quite that easy though, as you’ll be restricted to just six of the cars from the 30-odd available: the front-wheel drive ones.

This was a classic format in GT Sport Daily Races, with the options being the Audi TT, Peugeot RCZ, Renault Megane, and Volkswagen Scirocco. There’s two further cars available in GT7, with the Mazda 3 and Suzuki Swift added, and all are perfectly viable choices. You’ll just need Racing Medium tires fitted for the race, which thankfully has a rolling start.

Race B requires very few additional notes. It’s a five-lap race of the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps course — in regular, rather than 24h, layout — for Gr.3 cars.

There’s a few cars that are competitive in this race, so feel free to choose whichever you like and ensure it has Racing Soft tires fitted for what’s set to be a very frantic 11 minutes or so.

However we’ve got a fair bit going on in Race C, and you’re going to need to pay close attention to a lot of things in a short period of time.

It’s a 14-lap race around the Deep Forest Raceway Reverse course — with the rammers’ paradise of a tricky uphill left-handed braking zone into a right hairpin as the first major turn. Again you’ll need a Gr.3 car for the race.

The first twist is, for the first time in a very long while, there’s some settings options available to you in addition to the standard Brake Balance. You’ll have limited ability to tune some suspension and differential parameters and as you still cannot save setups for Daily Races you’ll need to apply your settings in the lobby before the race starts.

One further detail comes in the tire regulations. You’ll need to use a full set of both required types of tire — Racing Hard and Racing Medium — during the race at some point, meaning that you’ll need to make your way down the pit lane anywhere between the end of lap one and the start of lap 14 to make the change.

Note that this is technically different from a mandatory stop, but will still garnish your race time with a one-minute penalty if you fail to make the stop. Make sure you don’t cross the pit entry or exit lines, or an in-race three-second penalty will come your way for each, and the exit is right on the racing line too so can pose a danger to cars already on the circuit.

Tire wear is also set surprisingly high, at a 7x multiplier, so you’ll need to make the best of the Mediums before they wear out and become slower than new Hards too.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, November 25.
