Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Competition Time

Fresh off the back of a frantic weekend of competition in the Gran Turismo World Series World Finals, a new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races is now available.

The finals again have an influence on this week’s events, with Race C bringing one of the combinations used by the top players in Amsterdam — though without the credits boost we saw last week for a similar race.

Race A brings us a return to standard fare, comprising a one-make road car challenge. You’ll be using the Radical SR3 SL which, while it looks like a miniature LMP race car, is actually a fully street legal vehicle. In fact that’s what the “SL” in the name stands for…

It’s a straighforward, three-lap race around the Watkins Glen Long Course for the Radicals, with Sports Hard tires required, and Driver Rating (DR) updates are turned off as usual. That means you won’t gain or DR, but beware that Sportsmanship Rating (SR) is still active in this event.

Race B is also a familiar one, although perhaps treading a less-used path as we visit the Kyoto Driving Park Yamagiwa circuit.

It’s a five-lap race for the Gr.3 cars, with Racing Hard tires required, and is otherwise a pretty straightforward sprint. At the moment it looks like “power” cars are the choice of the top drivers — BMW M6, Nissan GT-R, Genesis X — but this may evolve over the week.

That takes us to Race C, which is set to be a pretty brutal affair. It’s a one-make event for the ferocious Red Bull X2019 Competition (and its unique Anniversary variant), which would be scary enough if it weren’t also for the fact the race heads to the Nurburgring 24h track.

You’ll note that this was also one of the two “Celebration Races” (against AI) which concluded this morning, as well as the current special Time Trial event, also running right now and until this Thursday, so you should have had plenty of practice by now.

However this is a race against other human beings, and also involves some interesting regulations. For example, you can adjust certain suspension parameters and downforce on your cars this week — and as GT7 still doesn’t allow you to save settings for Daily Races, you’ll need to be quick to adjust them before the race starts.

There’s also mandatory tires to be aware of, as you’ll need to use a full set of both the Racing Medium and Racing Soft tires during the four-lap race — likely two laps on each. Failing to do so will earn you a one-minute penalty to your total race time, and watch out for the pit lane entry and — particularly — exit, where you can score a three-second, in-race penalty for crossing the lines.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 16.
