More new Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races are now available, with a fresh set of three events that brings us back into a more regular look following a few weeks of GT World Series-themed action.
This week’s races see a one-make road car event in Race A, with the tuner-special RE Amemiya RX-7 taking center stage. Based on the FD generation of the RX-7, the RE Amemiya model has been wound up a fair bit, producing 100hp more than standard as well as sporting choice upgrades to make it a track day weapon.
You’ll be putting that to the test somewhat at Japan’s famous Tsukuba Circuit, best known for its Best Motoring races, time attacks, and the annual Mazda Roadster Endurance event. It’s a rather short and flat course though, so it’ll be a seven-lap race that’s over in no time.
Beware that, as usual, Driver Rating (DR) updates are turned off — so you’ll neither gain nor lose DR. However Sportsmanship Rating (SR) is still active in this event, and with Sports Hard tires and more hairpins than a renaissance fair’s hairstyling tent there’s going to be plenty of contact.
Race B brings us a classic Gran Turismo combination, stretching back as far as the Beta period for Gran Turismo Sport. Which was just shy of eight years ago, so enjoy that bit of feeling very, very old.
It is, of course, the Gr.4 cars at Dragon Trail Seaside. You can select any vehicle you like from this GT4-like category — though it looks like the AWD cars, and especially the Lamborghini Huracan, are favored — for the four-lap race.
You’ll just need Racing Hard tires fitted to your choice of vehicle, and after that it’s a straightforward sprint from lights to flag.
There’s only mild complexity to Race C this week, which sees us head to the Sardegna Road Track location, and the reverse layout of its “A” course. This is the longest variant, resembling a slightly battered square (like virtually all parcels coming over this busy festive period) and heading out into the Sardinian countryside.
With it being the reverse version, you’ve got a tricky opening section comprising a high-speed kink and a heavy braking zone for an obtuse right-hander. Unfamiliarity alone will lead to incidents here, especially on lap one — of 12 — for these fast, Gr.3 cars.
You’ve got two mandatory tire grades this week, so don’t forget to switch from one to the other during the race. It doesn’t matter in which order you use the Racing Medium and Racing Soft tires, or when you pit to change.
At a 5x tire wear multiplier you should get decent distance out of the faster Softs, but they’ll go off quite quickly at the end of their life. Ensuring you’re not running them so far that they’re slower than new Mediums will be key — and watch out for the pit-lane entry and exit which will earn you a three-second, on-track penalty if you cross them.
Failing to use both sets will also garnish your race time with a one-minute penalty at the end of the race, so be sure to swap over any time between the end of lap one and the start of lap 12 to avoid this.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 23.
