Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Merry Route X Mas

The penultimate set of 2024’s Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races are now available, bringing three new races — one a bit of a fan-favorite — for players to race over the Christmas period.

It’s Race A that sees the return of a classic which you’ll either love or hate, taking the form of a chess game at 250mph+. Sometimes referred to as the “meme race”, it features a range of pre-tuned road cars from which you can select — no garage cars in this event — for a single-lap of the almost 19-mile Special Stage Route X oval.

The dozen cars will each sustain 255mph in a straight line, but with the slipstream in effect in the race too you can see speeds over 270mph. Oh, and during the race (but not practice or qualifying) you’ll also have access to a burst of nitrous which is good for around 30 seconds. Use it… wisely.

Unusually, both Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are turned off, so this is pretty much a consequence-free event… and we probably shouldn’t have pointed that out.

For races B and C we see the usual line-up of Gr.4 and Gr.3 races, and it’s actually the faster Gr.3 cars that sit in the sprint-race slot in Race B.

That’s a five-lap blast around the Laguna Seca circuit, with Racing Medium the required tire type. You can select from any of the Gr.3 cars — and there’s a bit of a mixture of competitive vehicles this week, as Gr.3 remains the better-balanced of the two main race car classes — and go flat-out from lights to flag.

Race C adds a strategy element to the mix, as you’ll be taking the production-based Gr.4 cars out for a spin at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. It’s the GP course “no chicane” variant this week, skipping the final RACC chicane which leads onto the home straight.

This 11-lap race requires Racing Medium tires, and you’ll have a mandatory pit stop to take too. You’ll need to head down the pit lane any time between the end of lap one and the start of lap 11 or you’ll take a one-minute penalty added to your race time at the end.

There’s a few points of note here. Firstly, crossing the pit lane entry or exit lines will give you an in-race penalty of three seconds, so take care. You also don’t need to take fuel or tires to satisfy the requirements, as just heading in and out is enough.

However, you might want to think about swapping tires for a fresh set of Mediums. At a 4x tire wear multiplier you’ll be cutting it close trying to do all 11 laps on one set, and the loss of pace on the last lap alone will offset the time spent in the pits getting new ones — never mind the gradual loss of speed over the last quarter of the race.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, December 30.
