A characterful hot hatch from the library of special SEMA award-winners stars in this week’s Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, available from today and covering the next week of online events.
Naturally that comes in Race A, which takes the form of a four-lap race around the Watkins Glen Long Course for the Garage RCR Civic.
As an engine-swap candidate you’ll need to be careful to ensure your car is eligible for the event, although you can always borrow one as usual even if it’s limited to the standard black livery. Otherwise, make sure it has the required Sports Soft tires for the race.
It’s a relatively simply point-and-squirt blast, but as is usually the case the Driver Rating (DR) updates are turned off for the event. That means that you will neither gain nor lose DR no matter how well or badly you do, but beware: Sportsmanship Rating (SR) remains active, so keep it clean.
Race B is its usual single-paragraph explanation of an event. It comprises a five-lap sprint around the Interlagos circuit in your choice of Gr.3 car, on Racing Medium tires. There looks to be a few different competitive cars this week, as this class is typical better balanced overall, though most of the top ten qualifying times are using the Huracan GT3.
That leaves Race C which has a bit of complexity about it this week. Deep Forest is hosting the race, which is a 13-lap run for Gr.4 cars on Racing Soft tires… but only some of them.
You can use any of the all-wheel drive cars in the Gr.4 class this week, which is a surprisingly large group of eight vehicles. It’s a bit of an odd limitation though as the “meta” (most-effective tactic available) vehicle in Gr.4 would ordinarily be the AWD Huracan anyway. Perhaps this week’s update will change that, midway through the races.
Whatever your choice you’ll need to be aware of a few things that might otherwise catch you out. Firstly, and for a second week in a row, the False Start Check is enable on a Grid Start. Should you jump the gun, between the final light coming on and them all going off to start the race, you’ll take an on-the-spot power-loss penalty that lasts for as long after the start as the amount by which you jumped it.
There’s also a mandatory pit stop in effect. You’ll need to head down the pit lane somewhere between the end of lap one and the start of lap 13 — but taking on fuel or swapping tires isn’t required — and failing to do so earns you a one-minute penalty. Deep Forest requires some extra caution as the pit entry and exit are a little tricky and cutting the lines also gets you a three-second, in-race penalty each time.
On the question of changing tires, it’s up to you. The 3x tire wear multiplier doesn’t look like it’s enough to cause a major impact on tire life over the 13 laps, but you might find it quicker to take the couple of seconds’ hit in the pits to be on much fresher rubber all race long.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, February 3.
