Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Cossie Play

A new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, the ranked online mode of the game, is available from today and running at regular intervals across the next week.

It’s a pretty regular-looking set of events this week, comprising a one-make road car event in Race A and a pair of events for the core esports classes in the other two — though there is an interesting strategy aspect to the longer Race C this week.

Race A brings us a classic performance car in the shape of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth. At present the car isn’t available to buy in the Used Car Dealer, but you can borrow one in a standard color for the race if required.

The race itself is a standard, four-lap affair at the Sardegna Road Track B, with Sports Hard tires required. It’s a regular sprint race, so just go flat-out from lights to flag.

As usual Driver Rating updates remain turned off, so your finishing position has no effect on your DR, but Sportsmanship Rating updates are still switched on. It’s a pretty wide track though, so aside from keeping an eye out for ridiculous lunges and divebombs it shouldn’t be too bad for SR loss.

For Race B we have the usual, fairly brisk affair that can be summed up in a couple of sentences. It’s a five-lap sprint at Red Bull Ring (still with its turn three sliced off in the course map…) for Gr.4 cars on Racing Hard tires.

While you can choose any Gr.4 car for the race, be aware that the Top 100 leaderboard is currently 98% Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution models — and the two outliers are both also all-wheel drive models — so make your selection accordingly.

That leaves us with Race C which has a bit of strategy in the mix this week, in a 14-lap race for Gr.3 cars around Deep Forest Raceway, as well as a very easy-to-miss rule.

The race lists both Racing Hard and Racing Medium tires as available but, curiously, doesn’t mark either as mandatory. Don’t be lulled into thinking you can just use the Mediums throughout though, as there is a “Required Tire Type Change” rule turned on and buried in the Race Details page.

You’ll need to use a full set of both grades at some point during the race then, and swap at some point in the 14 laps during your pit stop — which is listed as mandatory, even though that’s explicitly required by the tire type change rule — or you’ll end up with a two-minute penalty at the end of the race.

How and when you choose to run the two types is up to you, but be aware that the 7x tire wear multiplier will chew away the Medium grade pretty quickly and reach a point where it’s slower than a nearly fresh set of Hards.

While a better-balanced class, you can expect to see an awful lot of GR Supras again this week — though by no means as overwhelmingly one-make as Race B.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, February 24.
