Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races: Abarth Bomb

There’s something of an experimental look to the Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races starting today, as two unusual races feature in the regular three-race lineup over the next week.

The format is familiar — a one-make road car event in Race A, and racing categories in the other two — but it’s a little less simple when you take a slightly closer look at it.

Race A, for example, revisits the idea of providing players with pre-tuned, pre-liveried road cars as we saw with the Plymouth Superbirds a couple of weeks back. However this week’s choice is a little odder, as you’ll be thrust into a hot hatch race in the classic, pint-sized Abarth A112.

These unassuming little things have been wound up to almost 200hp and fitted with sticky Racing Hard tires, as well as a selection of ten natty liveries for the race — which is four laps of the full Suzuka Circuit. You’ll need to be mindful of the False Start Check on the grid as well, so make sure you’re not rolling between the final light coming on and them all going off to start the race.

As usual, Driver Rating (DR) updates turned off for this event again, while Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates remain active — so try to avoid too much contact.

Race B is a island of normalcy this week, as it comprises a five-lap race at the Monza circuit for Gr.3 cars. You can, of course, select any of the cars from this bulging category — even borrowing ones you don’t have — and there is a mix of viable vehicles this week, but you’ll need to ensure that your choice is on Racing Medium tires.

Other than that there’s nothing of particular note in this sprint race, so just get out there and drive.

Race C heads to the 24 Heures du Mans course — known as Circuit de la Sarthe in previous GT games — for a longer and more complicated affair.

This is a race for a specific selection of the Gr.1 cars and while that might normally be Group C vehicles there’s a bit of a different choice this week. You’ll be able to race any of the eight modern LMP1/LMH cars, covering the last 15 years of competition — again, borrowing a vehicle if you don’t have your chosen car in your garage.

The BOP for this class does tilt heavily in favor of the Toyota GR010. Right now, 98% of the top 100 times use the LMH, though its stablemate TS030 and TS050 are also available, along with the 2011 and 2016 Audi R18s, Peugeot 908, and Porsche 919. The less-than stellar NISMO GT-R LM is also an option, and one brave driver has set a top 100 time in it…

However, given that there’s a tire wear multiplier of 4x in effect, the front-wheel drive car might not be entirely viable, and you’ll probably see largely one-make GR010 races this week. There is a mandatory pit stop in the six-lap race, but this doesn’t require tire changes or fuel consumption to fulfil and neither is necessary for most of the cars to reach the end of the race.

Skipping that stop will earn you a one-minute penalty after the race. Also watch out for the pit lane entry and exit limits — don’t come in too hot, for starters — as crossing them will also see you collect an on-track penalty of three seconds each time.

Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.

In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.

With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, March 31.
