Tuning makes a surprise return to the Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races this week, with one of the three new events starting today giving you almost free rein within a Performance Point limit.
That comes in Race A, which also gives a starring role to some of the new content from the 1.59 update in the shape of the probably most Gran Turismo car in the set: the Suzuki Carry.
In terms of tuning for the race you’ve got effectively three limitations, aside from the car. Firstly, you’re restricted to only using Comfort Medium tires, which should make things a little loose. Additional to that, there’s a 350PP limit. The only catch, aside from nitrous continuing to be prohibited, is that you cannot use a wide-body model of the dinky truck.
That does remove several of the options for vehicle appearance changes — including the mini racing truck — but you can still run the noodle truck and the box van forms in the race. Otherwise anything else in GT Auto and the Tuning Shop is fair game.
It should be noted that, as usual, there’s no Driver Rating (DR) updates in this race. Sportsmanship Rating (SR) updates are still switched on though and, given that it’s a five-lap race around the close walls and barriers of Tokyo Expressway Central Clockwise, you might find your SR in danger here.
This week’s Race B reverts to the Gr.4 cars, for seven laps around the Big Willow course at Willow Springs. It’s a standard, open-category race, so you can pick any vehicle from the class — although it does seem like 80% of the top 100 has opted for the Alfa Romeo 4C.
The race is a straightforward sprint on Racing Hard tires, though Big Willow does have some wide-open spaces to crash into for several seconds before you get returned to the circuit so watch out for any players who don’t like people alongside them…
For Race C we have a tactical Gr.3 battle at the full Suzuka Circuit, over ten laps of the famous Japanese Formula One venue.
There’s a few regulations in effect this week that you’ll need to heed if you don’t want massive post-race penalties, all centering on tire use and visits to the pits.
You’ll be able to use either Racing Hard or Racing Soft tires this week, but both grades are also mandatory. That means you’ll need to use at least one full set of each type of tire during the race (and for at least one pass of the start/finish on the track) of you’ll score a one-minute penalty at the end of the race.
Additionally there’s a mandatory pit stop in effect. That’s ultimately superfluous, as you’ll need to pit to swap over the tire grades, but failing to make at least one trip down pit road — whether you swap tires and/or take on fuel or not — also earns you a minute’s penalty at the end of the race. Beware the pit lane entry and, particularly, exit too, as even touching the left-hand solid white lines will land you a three-second penalty to be served on-track.
You’re free to pick when you do all of this, so long as it’s between the end of lap one and the start of lap ten. With a 5x tire wear multiplier you won’t find the soft tire lasting for all that long — but even very worn softs might be quicker than fresh hards. Fuel won’t be an issue, at a mere 3x multiplier for consumption.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in GT7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating after each race, and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, June 2.
