Right on cue, a new event in Gran Turismo 7’s Online Time Trial challenges is now available, with something of a blast from the past after recent weeks of modern vehicles and race cars.
Each Online Time Trial is a time-limited event, running for two weeks within the game’s Sport Mode. You don’t need PlayStation Plus to take part though, as you are not playing directly against other players — just their times.
The time trials also give credit rewards once the entry period concludes, with up to 2,000,000cr available if you’re within 3% of the final world record time. That of course means that the target for each threshold — within 10% for Bronze to earn 250,000cr, and within 5% for Silver to earn 1,000,000cr — is not a fixed time and may drop as the world’s fastest compete to set the top time.
For the new challenge you’ll be racing the classic Shelby Mustang GT350 around Deep Forest Raceway. As usual you can, of course, borrow a vehicle for the event — and you may need to as it’s only available to buy in the Legends Car dealer, and isn’t currently listed — if you want to keep the miles off your own example.
Whichever you choose to drive, the car will need to be fitted with Comfort Soft tires, which makes for quite the smoke show as the Mustang slithers about — particularly in sector two. It’s also under-geared for the main straight, but the braking point is still surprisingly early.
At this early stage the current top times sit at a low-1:44, making for a low-1:47 target for Gold. That’s likely to drop into the 1:46 range by the end of the two-week time trial if you want to be assured of collecting your two million credits.
The Kyoto Driving Park Lap Time Challenge that began last week is still available for the next seven days too. This one-make a hot-lap event features the Gr.1 version of the Bugatti Vision GT on Racing Medium tires, the world record currently stands at 1:15.346. That means the marker for Gold is, at present, 1:17.606, but with a week to go this could still fall a little further.
In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. PlayStation Plus is not required, as they are not multiplayer events.
The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. That being the case, the next new Time Trial should arrive at 0700 UTC on Thursday December 21.
