The latest event in Gran Turismo 7’s Online Time Trial challenges is now available, bringing a bit of a classic Gran Turismo combination to the global lap time competition.
Online Time Trials consist of time-limited, hot-lap events within the game’s Sport Mode. It’s not necessary to have a PlayStation Plus subscription to take part though, as there’s no direct head-to-head play. Each event runs for two weeks, and there’s a fresh event every Thursday.
These time trials are also a good way to earn credits. Once the entry period concludes you’ll receive a reward appropriate to how far you are away from the best time globally, offering up to 2,000,000cr for a time within 3% of the final world record time, with lower prizes for being within 5% or 10%. Of course that means that the target for prize eligibility is not a fixed time, falling as the world’s fastest players improve the top time.
It’s high-speed challenge this week, as you’ll be driving some of the world’s quickest tin-tops around a circuit that boasts one of the longest straights in world motorsport: Fuji Speedway.
For this week’s event you’ll be racing at the “short” layout of the track, which converts the Dunlop Chicane into a single and deceptively quick right-hander — cutting an entire 50 yards off the course length.
You’ve got a choice of cars this week too, as you can select any vehicle from the Gr.2 category. That group currently consists of nine cars, with three Super GT cars from 2016, three Super GT cars from 2008, the McLaren F1 GTR Longtail, Mercedes CLK-LM, and the Audi RS5 DTM car added back in March.
Whichever vehicle you use — and the 2016 Honda NSX Concept-GT looks to be the preferred choice — you’ll need to equip Racing Medium tires for the event. You can, of course, borrow a vehicle if you wish, keeping the mileage off your garage car (or saving the 800,000cr purchase price!).
With only a few hours gone, the current top times sit just around the mid-1:26s, with a Gold target at a low 1:29. It’s likely that’ll just clip into the 1:28s by the end of the time trial.
The Deep Forest Raceway Lap Time Challenge that began last week is still available until next Thursday too. The world record for the time trial currently stands at 1:43.863, requiring a 1:46.978 or better for Gold — although this may still drop a couple of tenths before it finishes.
In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. PlayStation Plus is not required, as they are not multiplayer events.
The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. That being the case, the next new Time Trial should arrive at 0700 UTC on Thursday December 28.
