This week’s new Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial has a very Italian flavor as the car-mad European nation both provides the car and hosts the event.
You’ll be going, of course, to the temple of speed at Monza, and trying to set the fastest time that you can in a high-powered Italian supercar in the shape of the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640.
This was the first new car under its Volkswagen Group ownership, replacing the Diablo. First introduced with a 6.2-liter version of the famous Lamborghini V12, this was upgraded to a 6.5-liter unit as part of a mid-life refresh which made its debut with this very LP640 model.
It’s not in entirely standard form, as you will need to pick up a slightly grippier set of Sports Medium tires for the event, but otherwise it’s a high-speed, hard-braking time trial in a road car.
While we are at a pretty early stage in the event, times are already beginning to settle in the low-1:50 range. That’s going to be a tempting target for the fastest players in the world, and likely means we’ll see some high-1:49s before the two weeks are over. You’re going to want to aim for something around a 1:53.1 in order to take gold then.
There’s still a week remaining on the Gr.2 challenge at Suzuka which started seven days back, and times have already reached what we were expecting. Currently the record is a 1:47.331, requiring a 1:50.550 for gold. However it’s a tightly packed leaderboard and gains are going to be hard to come by, so breaking under 1:50.5 will probably see you safe.
In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.
You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.
The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday September 5.
