Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: Snake Eyes

There’s a new Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial now available, bringing another combination in for the global hot-lap challenge with up to two million credits waiting for you — if you’re quick enough.

This latest event is another road car challenge, effectively replacing like with like as a similar event just ended, though it’s quite a different prospect.

You’ll be heading to the challenging Autopolis circuit, originally built to attract Formula One to the area but — for several reasons, including a bankruptcy — never actually managed to do so. However it’s become a staple of the Super GT, Super Formula, and Super Taikyu calendars.

It’s a tricky track to negotiate, with a number of off-camber corners and some stern elevation changes, and that task will be made a little harder by the car you’ll be using: the 2006 Dodge Viper SRT10.

This V10-engined beast is as slippery as its namesake, especially on the Sports Hard tires required, and is prone to understeer on corners like the uphill hairpin too. Keeping its weirder handling characteristics under control will be key.

The early exchanges in this event have seen times just creep down past two minutes flat, with a cluster of times in the 1:59.7s. There’s a good chance that we’re going to see strides made over the next 24hr at least, but we’re not sure where a 1:58 is going to come from so we’d expect the gold threshold to drop from its current 2:03.3 to a 2:02.7.

Another week remains on the second time trial, using the Aston Martin Vulcan at Interlagos, and the times are right in the zone we expected. The top time globally is 1:25.597, setting the gold target at 1:28.164. There’s actually a decent gap down to second, so that may be it, but if you want to be certain then any 1:27 will likely be enough.

Players in certain European countries will, for the next few hours, still also have access to a special Time Trial offering a VIP trip for one player (and a plus-one) to the GT World Series Finals in Amsterdam. You can find out more about this here.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday November 7.
