Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial: Down the Hatch

The latest Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial is now available, bringing together an iconic road car with a classic race track — both of which were at the peak of their powers in the 1980s.

As you may spot from the image above, the car in question is the Ferrari Testarossa — which is represented by a late, 1991 model in Gran Turismo 7 — and the circuit is Brands Hatch. Time for some Danger Zone on your Walkman as you lap.

Your job is of course to get the fastest time you can around the twisty, undulating circuit which is located in Kent in the UK, in this classic symbol of 1980s’ excess. It’s going to be a slippery one, as the mid-engined Testarossa wasn’t necessarily the best-handling car and it’ll be equipped with Sports Hard tires for the event.

Currently the record for doing that sits at a 1:36.351, which sets the gold time at a 1:39.241. From the looks of the early leaderboard, that’s a pretty aggressive time on day one, but also a big target. We wouldn’t be surprised to see some high 1:35s by the end of the two weeks, so aim at a 1:38.5 if you want gold.

Of course there’s still a week to go on the Gr.3 time trial at Daytona, and there’s been quite a bit of movement on the top time over the past seven days and a change in the car of choice from the Ford GT to the Dodge Viper.

Currently the global record sits at a 1:43.630, which sets gold at 1:46.738 — a little faster than our expectations. There’s a bit of a gap over the top two times and a larger than usual top-ten spread, so we don’t think there’s much more left but perhaps aim for a 1:46.6 if you want the gold reward.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday January 30.
