Gran Turismo 7 Time Trial: A La Kart

The next Gran Turismo 7 Online Time Trial is now available, bringing more open-wheel action to the fortnightly challenge but at a slightly slower pace than before.

For this week’s event you’ll be taking on one of the smallest circuits (in fact the smallest real one) in the very smallest and cheapest buyable car in the game, as you head to the Indy Circuit at Brands Hatch for a karting challenge.

As usual you’ll be able to borrow a kart for the event but, given its low price and therefore Trophy-gathering efficiency, most players should have a selection of them to grab. Either way, it’ll need to be on the standard Sports Soft tires for the event (which the rental will already use).

It’s a tricky thing to wrangle, with a serious curb allergy and quick steering that a lot of players find benefits from a specific steering controller/wheel setup. We won’t even visit the creepiness of chasing its ghost down either…

The short length of the lap means that this one will be all about finding tenths here and there, with the current global record just creeping under the 49-second mark. Gold is therefore a 50.446 lap right now, but we don’t expect that to be the all-important final state of affairs; we’d aim for a 50.250 or less, but that’ll be worth re-assessing next week.

Times in the second active event, using the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III at Eiger, are proving a little stickier than we’d expected with only three-tenths shaved off the record over the past week. That’s good news for those on the various reward boundaries as it delivers a little more certainty over the final week.

Currently the record is a 1:14.374, setting the gold threshold at a 1:16.605. While that’s a little slower than we’d thought last week, a 1:16.4 is probably still a good target to aim for just in case someone at the sharp end finds some special sauce.

In order to access the Online Time Trials, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. As it’s just you against the clock and not a direct, head-to-head multiplayer event, PlayStation Plus is not required.

You’ll usually need to be within 3% of the fastest time globally once the event finishes in order to secure “gold” status and a 2m credit bonus prize. There’s smaller prizes of one million for being within 5%, and 250,000cr for bronze at 10% off.

The events update every Thursday, with each individual challenge usually remaining available for two weeks and the oldest of the two events being replaced each week. You can look forward to the next new Time Trial arriving at 0700 UTC on Thursday March 27.
