It’s been a quiet few weeks for news on the next game update for Gran Turismo 7, but we now have confirmation that it’ll be landing on consoles this coming week — most likely on Thursday 30th January.
Of course we’ve been expecting the January update since it was explicitly mentioned during the Gran Turismo World Series finals in Amsterdam, in connection with the Hyundai IONIQ 5N which was — after a leak — officially revealed at the event.
That event also revealed a new fictional, F1-inspired race car called “F3500-A”, clearly built to resemble an early-90s’ machine. This was also mooted for an update “soon”, and widely interpreted as being the same January update.
A traditional “silhouette” teaser on social media from Polyphony Digital chief Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that not only is the update is on its way next week, but also shown off four cars disguised in heavy shadow — including both the cars mentioned above at the front of the image:
At the back of the shot there’s a car that will catch the eye of long-time Gran Turismo fans, appearing to be either a post-facelift, AH-bodied or an EF Honda Civic. The former previously only appeared in the series in the form of the Mugen Motul race car, but we can’t tell if the image shows this or a regular road car — which in both cases would likely be the sporty Si model if so, given the exaggerated front bumper.
That leaves one which is pretty hard to make out, but from the size and shape it looks like a modern compact crossover — a first for GT7. Looking at the general front-end shape and hood curves, the closest match is a first-generation Toyota C-HR, which comes with a wide range of possible powertrains but we’d guess that either the 112hp AWD model or the 180hp hybrid (with a CVT) is likeliest.
We’ll have to wait until closer to the time to find out just how close we are with the above guesses, and narrow down the specifications.
As usual, fans should be aware that this is just the first step of an update’s reveal process and contains only references to what cars will be coming with the patch.
We won’t know anything else until much nearer the time, which ought to be Thursday January 30 and, if the update follows its usual schedule we’ll find out more on Wednesday January 29. However we’ll only have a full picture once the update arrives and the detailed patch notes are available.
