Gran Turismo 7 Update Arrives Next Week, With Three New Cars

A little earlier than expected, Polyphony Digital studio founder Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that the next update for Gran Turismo 7 is coming in the final week of February.

Yamauchi made his usual social media post revealing the approximate timing for the update late on Friday evening, showing the traditional vehicle teaser by way of cars that are heavily disguised in shadow.

It’ll be effectively the third anniversary update for Gran Turismo 7, coming just under a week shy of that milestone, and add the game’s 100th car. And while we say “car”, that doesn’t seem to entirely cover the identity of one of the three:

That’s because the vehicle at the back is something we weren’t entirely expecting: a Mercedes-Benz Unimog.

Given all of the variants of the Unimog, a multi-purpose offroad truck — the name being a contraction of “Universal Motor Gerat” (or “universal motor tool”) — it’s hard to get an exact bead on which model it is. It looks to be the updated 411 model (a late 50s/early 60s machine based on the original 401) or possibly its contemporary 406, and in pickup form, but whichever version it is it’s set to be the largest vehicle to ever feature in a Gran Turismo game.

We have a couple more “enthusiast” machines sitting in the other two spots starting with another series debut, this time for the original Peugeot 205 road car. While the T16 and its homologation model have appeared in previous GT games, the regular road car hasn’t — and again it’s a little tricky from the angle show to determine what it is exactly. It could be something humdrum, or a GTI or Rallye model, but we’ve very much got our fingers crossed for the 1.9 GTI.

That leaves us with the right-hand car, which looks to be an updated model from previous GT games in the shape of the original BMW Z4. The variant that appeared in Gran Turismo 4 — and subsequently GT5 and GT6 — was a straightforward 3.0 inline-six model, but it remains to be seen what GT7 will feature.

As is always the case with these pre-update teasers, fans should note that this is only about the car content of the update and not any other details. It’s the first step of an update’s reveal process, with more information coming over the next few days about what else it contains.

That means that anything like track content (or even the long-overdue update to the Suzuka signage), engine swaps, Dakar kits for the Unimog, races, and features won’t be known for a few days yet.

Normally this teaser is posted at the weekend, ahead of an update the following Thursday. That would mean that Thursday February 27 would be our expected due date, but that’s not necessarily always the case — and the early teaser could hint at an earlier update.

Watch this space for all the latest information as we get it.
