Moviegoers at the Regal Cinemas chain in the USA were treated to a surprise screening of Gran Turismo on Monday night, and it appears they’ve come away with almost uniform praise for the film.
The screening was part of Regal’s “Mystery Movie Monday”, which gives a preview screening of films well ahead of their official premieres, but with a catch: Regal can’t tell you what movie it’s showing, so there’s an equal chance of seeing a stinker or a hit for your $5 ticket.
Movies that have appeared so far in the MMM promotion include the Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds A Christmas Carol adaptation Spirited, the Finnish WW2 thriller Sisu, and the animated Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken from Dreamworks.
However it was Gran Turismo that appeared at participating Regal theaters in the USA on Monday July 24, and those who saw it were quick to take to social media to heap praise onto the movie:
As we saw with the preview screening earlier in the month, the viewers were taken by the cinematography and acting performances — again with Archie Madekwe (as Jann Mardenborough), David Harbour, and Orlando Bloom meriting particular attention.
Along with the racing action — with several comments that mark it as being alongside Rush, Ford v Ferrari, and Days of Thunder (although hopefully with fewer downshifts to go faster) — those who got to view the movie also praised the soundtrack and the story. More than a few of the viewers remark that the entire theater applauded and cheered at certain moments of the film.
It’s actually very difficult to find comments that aren’t positive, with a few viewers only ambivalent about the story and some of the performances — Harbour’s Jack Salter stealing the show from the main character being among them.
However most comments are along pretty similar lines: it’s “awesome”, “incredible”, “edge of the seat”, and “one of the best sports movies ever”.
Of course the rest of us will have to wait until mid-August to see the film, as it launches on or around August 11 depending on territory. It’ll also be available in IMAX (filmed on IMAX-certified digital cameras) and in 4DX — which may include motion seats and scent effects, like the Gran Turismo 2 game disc…
Attendees at the Gran Turismo World Series Showdown in Amsterdam with a Platinum ticket will also get a special screening on the evening of Thursday August 10.
