A new game update for Gran Turismo Sport will arrive this week, according to an in-game announcement mirrored on the official game website. The update will follow a period of server maintenance outside of the usual Wednesday window, on Tuesday May 11.
It’ll be the third update this year, following on from v1.63 in February and v1.64 in March. Both of those updates addressed changes in Sport Mode — dealing with the five-to-three region change in the FIA Online Championship, Balance of Performance (BOP), and the penalty system.
The announcement reads as follows:
At the following time, we will perform maintenance on the ‘Gran Turismo Sport’ servers.
A new game update will also be available after the maintenance. Please note that during this time the online services, including [Sport Mode], will not be available.[Day & Time]
11 May, 2021, 04:00 – 06:00 UTC* The above time is subject to change.

Quite what the update will bring is a matter for speculation. Only one of the past five updates has brought any additional content to the game, with the Toyota GR Yaris arriving in November 2020’s v1.62 update. In fact only three updates in just over a year have featured new content, in the shape of the Mazda RX-Vision GT3 in May 2020, and the Toyota GR Supra 2020 in April 2020.
However, we did learn recently that the 2021 season of the Toyota GR GT Cup would feature a car not yet added to the game, with the Toyota GR86. The race for that car will be later in the year, in August, but it will need to be available in good time so there’s a chance we might see it in this week’s update.
Another possibility for this update is the addition of the Olympic Virtual Series event. That’s due to get underway this month, and the original announcement suggested that this individual games of the OVS will host the events within their own platform — which will be Sport Mode in the case of Gran Turismo Sport.
Of course it’s also likely that the update will bring further changes to Sport Mode, including tweaks to BOP and the penalty system. We won’t have to wait long to find out either way.
