After the first rumors emerged a few days ago, the first 2014 GT Academy competition has now been officially announced for India.
To keep the competition accessible to a wide range of people in the country, Nissan is hosting the first stage in a series of “Live Event” time trials at shopping malls in five major metropolitan areas around India, including New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai. The press release also hints that an online time trial qualifier will be available via the PlayStation Network at a “later stage”.
From those five cities, the fastest fourteen contestants will compete in the country’s National Final – a two-day “physical and mental training examination program” – and the top six will head to Silverstone in the UK for Race Camp.
Out of the five cities, fourteen contestants who clock the quickest lap times will be eligible to compete in the National Final, the first gateway to GT Academy’s coveted International Race Camp. The 14 contestants who enter the National Final will need to go through a two-day intensive physical and mental training examination programme which will filter out only six contestants who will be eligible for the International Race Camp at Silverstone in the United Kingdom.
Darren Cox, Nissan’s Director of Global Motorsports said, “For many reasons having India join the GT Academy programme has been a long held personal objective of mine and I’m proud that it has now come to fruition. GT Academy is getting huge international interest. We know that there are gamers outside of the traditional GT Academy territories that want a shot at winning so in 2014 we have extended the program to India as well. Nissan is an international company with global ambitions and it’s exciting that GT Academy reflects that.”
Of course, Indian GTPlanet members are already congregating here in our forums, so be sure to check in there to discuss the competition with others. Good luck!
