When the dust settles on another year of gaming, all eyes in the hobby turn to The Game Awards. As the crowning ceremony in the industry, nominations are made every year in a variety of categories including the prestigious Game of The Year award. Three racing titles are in contention for the 2017 Sports/Racing category.
It’s no surprise that the three titles that the TGA panel have put up for the award are Gran Turismo Sport, Forza Motorsport 7 and Project CARS 2. Each game is bringing a unique racing experience to players and all deserve the nomination. The trio are joining Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, FIFA 2018 and NBA 2K18 in the contender list.
It will take a large upset for a title in the racing genre to beat out the sports representatives. FIFA and NBA are some of the biggest franchises in gaming with huge sales numbers in each iteration. However, if there was ever a year for a racer to win it, then 2017 is a good shout.
GT Sport is completely changing the direction of the series by offering an organised, sanctioned environment for online competition. Project CARS 2 delivers the journey of a racing driver through it’s many disciplines and weather-fuelled track list. Even the lingering “CARPG” sub-genre has a representative this year because of FM7 and its extensive career mode.
The prospect of any of these titles winning isn’t that crazy: last year, Forza Horizon 3 won the category, despite being the only racing game nominated. The year before that? Rocket League.
Voting is live and those looking to show support for their favorite title can do so on The Game Awards website. Twitter, Facebook and Google are also lending a hand by allowing the public to vote through these channels. You can find the instructions for this on the official awards voting page above.
The awards will incorporate a mixed voting method with a chosen jury and public vote deciding the overall winner. According to the terms and conditions, 90% of consideration is attributed to the jury and 10% to the public vote. You will have to make your voice heard if you want a racing game to grab the yearly prize.
The Game Awards take place on December 7 and will be streaming live on most popular streaming platforms.
